25.01.2022 In today’s Thoughtful Thursday newsletter we share the story of ChaCha and her babies, Daisy-Sue and Violet. The world, for these three goats, was changed by a small group of thoughtful people. #thoughtfulthursday #littleoaksanctuary
25.01.2022 A big day with the 35 goats in our care today, with deworming, hoof care and vaccinations. We weigh each goat as we go which, aside from ensuring doseages of medication are accurate, helps us keep track of any potentially hidden health issues as we track their weight over time #littleoaksanctuary #farmanimalsanctuary #animalsanctuary #compassioninaction
25.01.2022 Thanks to superstar volunteers Annie and Sue who helped out in our pop up stall today, and to all the lovely people who stopped by to say hello and support the animals #littleoaksanctuary
24.01.2022 Combining Friendship month with this weeks highlight on lesser-known residents, we bring you the gorgeous goat pair, Bleatrix Potter & Virginia Hoofe! These two little goats came to us via RSPCA ACT, having been surrendered from a hoarding situation in suburban Canberra. Bleatrix was suffering from hooves so severely overgrown that it has caused what might be permanent changes to how she walks. With regular trimming we have gradually improved her condition however it is unli...kely that her hooves will ever return to normal. Bleatrix was also quite overweight which added extra strain to her little feet. Her buddy Virginia Hoofe was fortunately surrendered in much better condition. Bleatrix is nearly the smallest of the Little Oak gang, however her best buddy is ex lab goat, Charles Baarwin, who is nearly the tallest goat in the gang. Although an odd couple, these two look very sweet wandering about together, and Virginia is usually not too far away. Virginia now mainly hangs around with Ariana Grande, a little goat who was found in the streets of Canberra as a kid. Regular walking around with the flock has improved the condition of both goats and they are enjoying the company of other goat friends. 22.01.2022 Bing loves back scratches, especially in spring! Bing is a breed of sheep that still sheds their wool. This is how all sheep used to be until we selectively bred them to retain it so we could harvest it for ourselves (Ziggy the other sheep having cuddles doesn’t shed and needs annual shearing).
21.01.2022 Everyone’s primed with Monday motivation this morning Clancy the Clydesdale finding the strength for the new day. After all, there could be carrots. #littleoaksanctuary

18.01.2022 Whilst we're hoping for the best, we're preparing for the worst. With just a week until the official start of bush fire season, we're updating our fire and emergency contacts. If you answer yes to any of the below and would like to help us in case we need to evacuate our animals (again!), please complete our form! Do you have a property that's suitable for farmed animals? Do you have a 4WD or tow vehicle? Do you have a trailer (horse float), or animal carry cages? Would you be willing to transport or temporarily house animals in case of a fire or emergency at the sanctuary? https://www.littleoaksanctuary.org/fire-and-emergency-volun
18.01.2022 Cow's aren't milk making machines. Like us, (as mammals), cows only produce milk when they deliver a calf, to feed their baby. After a 9 month pregnancy, a cow delivers her calf who is then taken within their first five days, so that we can take her milk for ourselves. If male, her calf is sent to slaughter. This cycle continues until she can no longer consistently produce calves, and then she is sent to slaughter. Despite it's wholesome, innocent image, the dairy industry... is filled with incredible suffering. You can spare this suffering by choosing plant based options, with the growing number of products readily available, it's becoming easier and easier to ditch dairy, for good. #thoughtfulthursday #ditchdairy #plantbased #sparethesuffering #littleoaksanctuary

12.01.2022 Spring, a time of new beginnings and new possibilities, is upon us at Little Oak Sanctuary It's lovely seeing the wild birds care for their young We have an abundance of habitat for wildlife at the sanctuary, with trees that drop limbs creating wonderful hollows for birds, possums and gliders.
11.01.2022 Hoof trimming day for the little oak horse herd! Clancy and Didge are both on the mend from hoof abscesses due to the ongoing wet weather. Whilst they were quite sore at the beginning they’re over the worst of it now and have barely stopped running around and playing! 10.01.2022 After a week of treatment and recuperation, Phillip has regained his eyesight and today returned to the paddock and the rest of his sheep flock mates (goats frighten him). So glad to see this fellow so improved #littleoaksanctuary
10.01.2022 Whilst most humans spend years pondering our own purpose, we're very quick to assign purposes to animals, and usually, that purpose is entirely based on our use of them. Animals exist outside of the purposes we thrust upon them. They are not machines, sporting equipment or fashion accessories. Humans have a natural tendency to only view the world from our perspective, it's called anthropocentrism. We breed animals into the world purely for our own purposes, with traits that ...suit our needs, and once that need has passed, the animal is discarded. Humans have created animals through selective breeding for the traits we deem desirable, and it is the animals who suffer for it. We have created chickens that lay hundreds more eggs than they ever would have, birds bred for meet that grow incredibly large, incredibly quickly. Dogs with pushed in faces, short legs or slanted hips that we think look appealing, and sheep who no longer shed their wool in the summer. We forget that these animals are not machines, that they do not exist for us. The human perspective is not the only perspective. Animals also have a perspective, and an interest in living their lives. #thoughtfulthursday Sign up to our Thoughtful Thursday newsletter via our website.
10.01.2022 With temps set to head into the high 30s over the weekend, the chicken folks spent their Friday with frozen treats, fresh straw beds (thanks to our lovely volunteers) and dust bathing in the shade. 09.01.2022 How lovely are these images taken by one of our recent guests on a private tour? We love being able to share the stories of our residents with people, and whilst not all of our residents are as outgoing and keen on interacting as Molly, Charlie, and the Turkey boys (Kevin and Sidney), that, in itself, is such an important lesson. Animals are all individuals, and just like us some are more introverted than others. At sanctuary, animals have the choice to interact with guests... or volunteers if they choose to. They are also free to choose not to interact, and we discuss the importance of respecting that choice with those who visit us. Learning to respect others boundaries, including animals, is a really valuable lesson, and one we're glad to share as we work towards building a more compassionate world #littleoaksanctuary

07.01.2022 Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Piggy, one of our very first residents, is a very special lady. It's been our privilege to know her for almost her entire life and to help provide her with the best possible life that we can, and although she's now considered an elderly pig, we're here to make each day the best day we can. Today Tiger is enjoying the beautiful spring sunshine, in fact, if it gets warm enough, she might even go for a wallow this afternoon, just before a tasty and nutritious dinner.
06.01.2022 A super fun, sunshine filled day at Little Oak for our Kind Kids Easter event! Our guests got to meet many of our rescued animals residents, learnt about them, made some Easter themed crafts, had a veggie sausage sizzle then finished with a dairy free Easter egg hunt! There may have even been an Easter bunny sighting We had a great day!
05.01.2022 Spending some time with Charlotte, Prince, Portia and Willow this evening as we pump water into their water tank. Carting water is a job that we need to do more frequently as the weather starts to warm up as wallows can evaporate quickly!

05.01.2022 Yesterday we welcomed a rescued adult male wombat onto the sanctuary grounds. This fellow was rescued from the middle of town in Braidwood by wombat rescue legend, Bill Waterhouse and was released into a vacant hole at little oak. The sanctuary is great wombat country so we hope this fella enjoys his new surroundings!

01.01.2022 Whilst Facebook has blocked our page because apparently we’re news (?) Sanctuary work continues! This afternoon on returning from working outside the sanctuary James helped inspire the goat gang to move paddocks we rotate the animals to different areas on a frequent basis as part of our pasture and parasite management plans, and, a change is, apparently, as good as a holiday! #changeisasgoodasaholiday #goatsofig #animalsanctuary #littleoaksanctuary

01.01.2022 Next Tuesday, December 1st, Little Oak Sanctuary is joining the global Giving Tuesday movement! The day that summer starts, we ask you to get behind us and help us raise $27,300. This is the amount we need to implement life saving measures to be fire ready as summer starts and the threat facing our animal residents increases. New safe zones, vehicle and trailer repairs, and mobile fire units are on our must-have list, they will not only prove life saving in the event we're ...threatened by fire again, but they will provide more paddocks so we can manage the property better, ensure we can undertake rescues farther afield, transport animals to and from vet appointments, and cart water to pig wallows, poultry yards and tree runs. Your gift this Giving Tuesday will provide ongoing benefit for the 180+ animals in our care at any one time. Please donate today! www.littleoaksanctuary.org/fire-protection
01.01.2022 Today's lesser-known resident is the gorgeous Bing! Bing and his twin brother Louis were born on sanctuary in 2013, after their mother Emilie was spared by the "meat man" at the Goulburn sale-yards. Bing and Louis came into the world a few months after their mother was saved from slaughter, little did we know that day we were saving three lives when we took in Emilie. Bing and his family are Wiltshire sheep, typically bred for their meat, this breed of sheep still shed their wool each year as sheep naturally did, so they do not need to be shorn. Bing is a friendly and outgoing fellow. He enjoys back scratches, especially in the warmer months whilst he's shedding his wool, and will let you know, thank you kindly, when you can stop scratching his back. Pics - Bing today and in 2013 as a young lamb
