25.01.2022 Having loads of fruit on your trees is great, but if the limbs aren't strong enough to support the weight you're likely to see a lot of snapped limbs. Causing damage to the tree and sending all that fruit to the ground before it is any where near ripe. #orchard #diaryofanorchadist

11.01.2022 At a quick count (#notsoquick) there are 176 plum trees, 268+ nectarine, 5 cherry, 27 apricot, 160+ peach. Quite a few unknowns so those numbers may well go up...
10.01.2022 Took the scythe for its maiden voyage this afternoon. It is quite enjoyable to use but will take some more time to get the technique right, no shortage of opportunities. Deep matted kikuyu proved a challenge.
09.01.2022 Diary of an #Orchadist. Day two on the #scythe. Definitely getting the hang of it. It is immensely satisfying! I especially love how it magically creates these windrows.
07.01.2022 Plums are on their way!
06.01.2022 On a more positive note, my stones and peening jig have arrived meaning I can start scything...
05.01.2022 Things aren't all peachy in this orchard (First and last use of a fruit pun, promise). Physical damage to nectaries, most likely birds, termites have hollowed out trunks, leaf curl, some strange sappy discharge on the peaches which some quick Googling may suggest oriental fruit moth, possibly some fruit fly already. I've sent an email away to the Department of Agriculture with photos for some identification. I'll share the findings when I hear back.
03.01.2022 The ag dept has responded. Very helpful and informative. They suggest the first photo is early feeding damage possibly by adult weevils. The gumming issue is potentially a bacterial disease called Xanthomonas, often accompanied by canker, which is also present on the trees.
02.01.2022 Necatarines, cherries and apricots up for grabs at Steiner's market today
01.01.2022 Diary of an orchardists. Dear diary, it turns out that hopes and wishes are not sufficient to protect peaches from birds...
