24.01.2022 THE FIRST CRY For the majority of babies, they will let out a big cry in the first 10 seconds of being born. This cry is instrumental in getting oxygen into their lungs and helping to expel any fluid. Sometimes, especially if labour’s been a bit tough, they can come out a bit shocked and need a little bit of help to get going. It can always be nerve racking when baby comes out silent. I have found myself holding my breath until baby cries, and when that first cry is heard..., you can feel the room instantly relax.
