24.01.2022 Very helpful information on communicating with others who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)

19.01.2022 What’s in the box?? Today we’ve been using a simple box activity to use the question word what. Using boxes is a great way of focusing on different language concepts including naming items, understanding location words, giving instructions and using question words. What you need: 1. A box with a lid 2. Objects - using daily objects is best (how often will you use the word whale shark?) Combine this with a silly song and some imagination and it’s all about the fun!

16.01.2022 Language / behaviour modelling in its purest form

13.01.2022 Hi Bumpity Bumpers, Todays Friday fact features a guest speaker!! Happy Friday Bumpity Bumpers Jools very kindly let me do a guest post this week for her ...amazing Bumpity Bump mums. Im Kate Schroder, a paediatric speech pathologist with my own little business Little Stars Therapy, and Cody and I are fellow Bumpity Bumpers. Fridays Fact Communication is key. Communication is not just the speech sounds we use. It encompasses how we interact with each other and includes eye contact, gesture, facial expressions, understanding language, using words, sounds and our social skills. It is hands down one of the most important skills a person develops which is why it is something we need to make sure that we are able to support. So often mums will ask What do I do if I am worried about my childs communication? First of all, What NOT to do Stress out: Being a new mum myself, sometimes the worry seems like a full-time job. As we are all learning all babies develop at different rates. Johnny may be crawling and pulling to stand while Freddie is still making snow angels on the mat. The same goes for communication development. Bubs communicate in so many different ways from crying and vocalising to using eye contact and gesture and they develop their first words and sentences at a range of ages. You know your child best, so trust yourself as the professional in how their development is progressing. Wait and see If you are super concerned about your childs communication dont listen to those who say they will grow out of it. If you have their communication looked at and all is well than you have lost nothing. Early intervention has been proven to be more effective than getting support at a later stage e.g. if you leave a child using an incorrect speech pattern this can become a habit and make it more difficult to correct at a later stage. What can I do? If you feel like your child needs a bit of help with communicating contact a speech pathologist. You can either do this directly or go via your GP/ Child health nurse. Having a speech and language assessment will give you an up to date understanding of where your child is in their communication development and how to help. Ban google doctor and go straight to the professionals. If you head to Speech Pathology Australia you will find the communication milestones information sheets. www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au Keep listening and talking: Make some special time every day when you have the least amount of distractions as possible to spend with your child listening to them (whether it be noises, words or sentences) and talking to them. Read a book, talk about what you can see or play with their favourite toy. Be your childs narrator. Talk to your child as you go about day to day tasks Offer your child choices instead of asking yes/no questions give your child opportunities to use words and language by offering them choices within their day But how will I know? Some VERY basic tips. Seek support if: You find your baby is not responding to you with sounds Your child isnt able to follow basic instructions by 12 months e.g. get your shoes Your child doesnt have a number of words by 18 months Your child seems frustrated when others dont understand them Your child is not joining single words by 2 years old If you would like more information or support, follow me on Instagram @Littlestarstherapy or Facebook Little Stars Therapy Perth cheers Kate Thanks Kate and Have a great weekend everyone cheers Jools Bumpity Bump Physio
