21.01.2022 We are often asked what sports would be beneficial for their Little Pea to do. There is such a range out there and each child is different but 9/10 times I recommend Martial Arts! Martial Arts is fantastic to help our Little Peas learn all the skills they too often struggle with from motor skills/coordination to attention/concentration. Caza Jui Jitsu Caloundra offer kids classes from 4:30pm weekdays depending on your Little Peas age. Plus, they are located in the same buildi...ng complex as Little TheraPeas! So easy to find! Give Andrew a call or pop in during your next session with us to find out more. Rebecca Lockyer, Occupational Therapist/Director, Little TheraPeas. 17.01.2022 What is a Therapy Assistant and how can they help me and my Little Pea? A Therapy Assistant is someone who is trained and works under the supervision of a qualified therapist and can support your Little Pea to practice the skills they need to learn in therapy and apply these throughout their daily life, whether at home, school or out in the community. Did you know the Little TheraPeas Therapy Assistants can work with your Little Pea even if you don’t see our OT’s or Psycholog...ist? Little TheraPeas is a collaborative clinic where regardless of who is involved in that Little Pea the whole team works together behind the scenes to get the best outcomes for them. We also work in with your other providers our TAs are skilled at following home programs provided by any therapist and work hard to make contact with them as required. Little TheraPeas Therapy Assistants can play a variety of roles based on you and your Little Pea’s unique needs and therapy/NDIS goals. Whether it be carrying out the specific home program provided by your therapists, supporting your Little Pea to develop skills (such as social skills, emotional skills, motor skills, learning, attentional skills and so much more); conducting a group program within our clinic; providing one-on-one care, support and companionship to Little Pea at home, school or out in the community; providing individualised learning support in the classroom to support your child to develop skills such as reading, writing, fine motor skills, behaviour and attention; attending therapy sessions with your Little Pea and later implementing strategies in daily life to support the application of skills; supporting your Little Pea’s participation in daily routines or leisure activities at home, including assisting with school pick-up/drop-off; providing support for your Little Pea to participate in the community, eg. shopping, social outings, etc. Therapy Assistants are truly amazing and we are so lucky at Little TheraPeas to have brilliant, proactive and forward thinking Therapy Assistants who go the extra mile! 16.01.2022 Does your child hate walking on grass/wet surfaces? Is your child particular about the clothes they wear (have to be really soft or with the tag cut off)? Do you find your child getting upset when you tickle them or cuddle them or touch their hair? What about when they get a haircut/washed or you try to cut their finger nails? If you said yes to one or all of these questions chances are your child has a tactile sensitivity. The Tactile (or ‘Touch’) system is in charge of mult...iple types of sensation to your body/skin; sensations such as light and deep touch, vibration, pain, pressure and temperature registration. A child with tactile sensitivity is having these sensations distorted and their brain is telling them that the sensation is dangerous, threatening or generally causing discomfort. It is always best to get your child assessed by an OT to find out exactly what is going on and how to help but in the meantime here are some of our top tips to help. - Give plenty of warning prior to touching your child and be respectful if they decline or move away. When you ask if you can give them a hug/fix their hair, etc. don't take offense when they say no, it's not that they don't love you but rather their bodies can't handle the sensation. - Use deep touch over light touch. Deep pressure is (generally) more calming. Think about what you like when you are stressed: massages, a cuddle, wrapping yourself up under the blankets, etc. - Try a slow approach to exposure to tactile experiences. Start with some soapy water play in a bucket with a towel within reach and work up to adding in proper bubbles and slowly building the amount of skin contact. - Explore what your child likes and doesn't like. Help them to understand that it is normal to have things we like, things we are learning about and things we don't like. Talk to them about the things you like/don't like. Explore anything and everything from materials (clothes, blankets, textures of sand, water, cream, etc) to surfaces (hard/soft, bumpy/smooth). 05.01.2022 Today we met with Elaine and Zoe from Sunshine Sign and Sing. These two amazing ladies are what (not just the Coast but) Australia needs! Little TheraPeas can’t wait to collaborate in the future so stay tuned for some exciting things ahead!

01.01.2022 Little TheraPeas is 1! I officially saw my first Sunshine Coast client on 26/02/2020, 3 weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown. Today we had a small friends and family celebration for our 1st birthday. ... Thank you to all our friends, family and most importantly, our Little Peas and families for your support over the past year. Little TheraPeas is what it is today because of every single person that has walked through it’s doors and many others who have supported Scott and I behind the scenes (a lot of this featured in the photos). We are so grateful for the amazing community that is Little TheraPeas. We can’t wait for the the many years to come with you all! Rebecca Lockyer, Occupational Therapist/Director, Little TheraPeas.
