25.01.2022 CAN YOU LEND A PAW TO SAVE A LIFE? The kitten season has well and truly arrived and we can already tell that it will be a tough one given how things have started off. In the midst of these uncertain times, we are finding it difficult to keep up with the necessities needed for our kittens and cats in rescue care. Can you open your HEART to help us to save lives? We ask for your assistance in our time of need and would be so grateful for any help you are able to provide. We have drop off locations to our foster homes around Melbourne, or items can be purchased online and mailed to our HQ address. Otherwise, you can make a contribution via our website. 25.01.2022 Look how far our tiny baby kittens have come! After being rejected by their mother at birth, our litter of 4 kittens were left to perish to the elements, cold and starved... Luckily we got to them just in time and CLOUD, MISTY, RAIN and SKY have been gaining and growing in foster care ever since You can do a BIG part in helping us to save the lives of orphaned baby kittens. Please visit our website for more information: https://littlevandfriendsanimalrescue.weebly.com/donate.html

25.01.2022 MISTY, CLOUD and RAIN And dont forget the SKY With courage, might and main Well do our best to get you by

25.01.2022 No matter how many times we go through this devastation, it never ever gets easier... We are so sad to bring the news that our foster kitten Harmony has passed away. We are extremely devastated and heartbroken right now. We love each and every one of our fosters more than words can express and Harmony was so, so special to us. She stayed in hospital and received medical treatment when she fell ill but her tiny body could not cope and she deteriorated so quickly that we barel...y had time to process any of it before she was gone. Kittens are just so fragile and none of it is fair, but that is life. This may come as a surprise as we hadn’t shared that we had been struggling so much in the past week. We do always have a hard time with sharing this kind of news with our supporters, but also know how important it is to be transparent and bring to surface all of the hardships of rescue work. Fostering is hard work and requires so much physical and emotional commitment of our volunteers. The love and tenderness for our foster animals is something that cannot be expressed in words easily. We become everything in their little lives when they need us most and vice versa, and when they fall ill or die, it affects us tremendously and brings us to our knees. In difficult times, social media brings an extra layer of stress that is sometimes hard to cope with and it is always hard for us to grieve publicly. It is extremely painful when people judge and pry into details about their deaths and how we are dealing with everything, so please just give us space and time to grieve... As foster carers responsible for little lives that are so young and vulnerable, we know that we are opening our hearts to so much pain and heartbreak. But our tenderness and willingness to help is not a fault, but what makes us right for the job. It is kindness, it is caring and it is strength, and with this strength, we will carry on to do what we do best. Harmony spent her time in foster care surrounded by warmth and love always. We regret that we could not save her, but we can hope to help so many more kittens in the future... A sincere thank you to our carers, the team at Progressive Vet Care and to FurEver After Pet Cremation for looking after our little friend. To donate in Harmony’s honour, please visit our website: https://littlevandfriendsanimalrescue.weebly.com/donate.html

24.01.2022 Chai, Earl and Tetley are the newest foster kittens to join our rescue. It is clear that they are not in great shape at the moment, suffering from a severe case of cat flu that has already taken the life of one of their siblings... Now safe and sound in foster care, our remaining 3 have been placed in an intensive care unit, fitted with a nebuliser and oxygen supplementation to ease their congestion. Coupled with supportive care, some antibiotics and medications for their tired eyes, we hope that our kittens can continue to fight and that we see an improvement in their condition soon... A big thank you to everyone who has been involved in getting this litter to safety, including Diane, Natalie and foster carer Natasha. We will continue to do all that we can but for now, we welcome you to your safe space, Chai, Earl and Tetley

20.01.2022 FELIX and FINNEGAN have reached 3 weeks of age and we are so proud of their progress! Hand rearing is a tough job, but well worth the reward to see our little ones grow up BIG and STRONG Make sure to stay tuned on our page for FELIX and FINS rescue journey!

20.01.2022 It has been a turbulent week for our kittens Cloud, Misty, Rain and Sky but we have some promising news for our very special kittens. Earlier this week, Cloud had a major seizure like we’ve never seen before that saw us rushing to the hospital for stabilisation We have been liaising with the amazing team at the Melbourne Cat Vets and have decided to trial her on anti seizure medications to prevent this from happening again... We have also been working hard to slowly wean ou...r kittens from milk to solids, keeping a detailed diary of the amounts, their progress, and their response to the foods Every time we have tried this in the past, our kittens will become listless and exhibit a seizure response a few hours after eating. To explore and diagnose their unusual condition, our specialist vet will be sending off Cloud’s urine sample to test for a few rare enzyme deficiencies that may explain why they have this seizure response to foods. As this test does not exist in the veterinary industry, the sample will be sent to a human hospital facility, comparing hers against one of our normal foster kitten’s urine. We have our fingers crossed for some answers and hope that her new medications will prevent any future episodes For now, we have made some promising progress this week with slowly transitioning our kittens onto solid foods and we are feeling hopeful for the first time in weeks Thank you to everyone who has contributed towards Cloud, Rain, Misty and Sky so far and especially to the team at the Melbourne Cat Vets for looking after our kittens. We have a long road ahead of us and your donations have helped us in ways you could not even imagine. We will continue to do our best for our very special kittens and keep this space updated. 20.01.2022 We are so HAPPY to update you on our little PB, now renamed SCOUT! Our little foster kitten has settled well into her new FURever home with Deborah and Michael, and it brings so much joy to our hearts to know that she is happy, healthy and loved with her new family Scout initially came into foster care malnourished, underweight and flea ridden but made a complete turn around on a good diet and a whole lot of TLC! We are glad to have been a part of her rescue journey and to have another HAPPY HOME TAIL to add to our books

19.01.2022 It’s CHRISTMAS time and with the holidays coming up, many families are thinking of adopting a new pet! We have been inundated with enquiries and standardly receive 50+ applications each time we list a new kitten for adoption We are also seeing an increase in the number of people who have mentioned that they would like a kitten for Christmas, or would like to gift one to their families On one hand, we are glad that rescues are finding homes for so many stray kittens and c...ats during this period. But on the other hand, there is a serious concern about what will happen to these animals after the Christmas period ends... Please be wise and take the time to think your decision through before applying to adopt a new pet for Christmas. Understand that cats can live upwards of 20 years so this will likely be a lifetime commitment. Pets truly become a part of the family and you must expect to make compromises and adjustments to your lifestyle to ensure that they are safe always. It is sad and disconcerting to know that people surrender their pets for reasons including moving houses, changing jobs, a new pet or they have had a baby, etc. Although we know that circumstances change in life, the public do not see what we see when an animal arrives into foster care, scared and confused... And as much as it sad for us, it is nothing compared to what heartbreak the animal endures when it is disowned So please think your decision through before applying to adopt. Remember that pets are family, not gifts. Stay safe and be kind, Cloud and the rescue team

19.01.2022 We lost our 4th kitten to parvovirus this week. Our beautiful friends left this world too young when they had so much life ahead of them with their new families. This preventable disease tore through the weakest of our kittens, taking their lives so quickly. There is nothing more terrible... We are no strangers to loss but also did not think that this would affect our team the way that it has. But we persevered, stuck by our kittens until the very end and never abandoned them... despite how incredibly hard it became. This is what we do as foster carers. Rest easy Little Friends Know that you were loved Until the very end R.I.P Ebony, Ember, Fudge and Teddy

18.01.2022 LOOK HOW CUTE! FELIX and FINNEGAN are now starting to look like real kittens It is amazing how far they have come in just a little over a week in foster care We couldnt continue to do what we do without the hard work and dedication of our volunteer foster carers, and of course without your ongoing community support

18.01.2022 Its milks time for Little Rain After a bit of a scare that left our tiny foster kitten listless and barely responsive last week, we are so happy to see that Rain is now bright, alert and happy with a very strong appetite Unfortunately, very young kittens may decline within just a matter of hours and its important that we stay vigilant about their health and demeanour along every step of the way It is also vitally important for the carer to take it one feed at a time, to be prepared, and to make sure to get as much rest in as possible between tending to their tiny fosters. To look after the little ones, we must make sure to take care of ourselves too Rain is coming up to 3 weeks of age and is currently on a 3 hourly feeding schedule. We will do our best and hope that he can continue on this upwards path!

17.01.2022 It’s just amazing what a little bit of tender, love and care can do Three weeks into care and our kittens Rebel, Riot and Trouble have come so far, now reaching 800g. As a routine, we weigh all of our foster kittens daily to ensure that they are on the right track If in any instance their weight starts to wane, we also have an indicator that something might be off. It is so very important to stay vigilant when taking care of kittens so young! More so, our kittens need... to be desexed before they can head out to find their new loving homes This prevents unwanted future pregnancies and stops the breeding cycle so that there will be less kittens on the streets in need of our helpIt's a vital step on their journey to adoption but there is a weight limit they have to reach in order to be able to have this surgical procedure. Once at 1kg + we book our kittens in for their desexing, microchipping, vaccination and health check, readying them for rehoming Keep your eyes posted on this space for any adoption announcements. You won’t want to miss these troublesome trio!

17.01.2022 How could we ever get any work done with this trio around? Foster kittens Muffin, Nutmeg and Willow are as cute as buttons!

15.01.2022 General Announcement: Due to being overwhelmed and inundated, we’ve made the decision to turn off our page messages for a while as we focus on our special needs kittens in rescue care. As a small volunteer team, it is unfortunately just not feasible for us to reply to the many, many daily messages asking if we have kittens. You will need to keep an eye out on our Facebook page and Petrescue profile to apply for adoption, and our foster carers will be in contact with successf...ul applicants. Please only contact us during this time if there is an animal in need of our immediate help. We will be welcoming messages again when our burden has lessened and we are able to cope. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Be kind always, Vivian and the rescue team

15.01.2022 Trigger warning: Graphic images Yesterday, we got a call to rescue 4 newborn kittens, but was told that 2 had quite significant injuries. Knowing that the dangers were imminent for kittens this young, we rushed off to collect them. Upon arrival we found that one had it’s umbilical cord strung around the left foot that had cut off circulation completely. The foot was no longer viable. Another kitten was bleeding at the umbilical, had an open chest wound and a broken tail.... Our hearts sunk. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do for kittens this young with such significant injuries. With our options limited, both were put to sleep humanely. We feel so sad for our kittens, who never got the chance to open their eyes, nor play nor experience love and life. These images may be confronting for some, but we will not sugarcoat the reality, nor blur out the nitty gritty of rescue work. This suffering will not be ignored. Neutering is so important in preventing these tragedies from happening in the first place. Please desex your pets so we don’t have to see this devastation over and over again. We are so passionate about what we do here at LVF but lately it seems like the bad has outweighed all of the good that we do. Compassion fatigue is settling in at its roots but we have to press on for the little ones that need us... We rushed home with the remaining 2 kittens, keeping them close to our chest for body warmth. They are still with us and have made it throughout the night on kitten milk formula, drinking well for our foster carer Steff. We will persevere and do our very best to see them through.

14.01.2022 We love to see snippets and updates of our foster kittens everyday lives, and encourage our adopters to send pictures and share your stories! Some of our long term followers may remember our very SPECIAL foster kitten Sunshine, who came into rescue care as a orphaned baby, developing a serious bowel condition early in her kittenhood We are glad to report that Little Sunny has been happy and healthy in her forever home with Natalie and Michael, together with her BFF Wally It brings so much joy to our HEARTS to know that weve made a difference in their lives and it gives us motivation to keep doing our work

13.01.2022 We have fantastic news today as our special needs kitten Cloudy is finally being adopted! After months in foster care, many vet visits for her seizures and a lot of hardships, Cloud has persevered through it all, now happy, healthy and ready for her new family Cloud is joining Natalie and Michael who has adopted with us before. Our long time followers may remember another one of our very special kittens from last season, Sunshine and her foster sibling Wally We have our fingers crossed that Cloud will settle in nicely, making new friends in her forever home We are so very proud of how far she has come and could not have imagined a better family for her to join Rescue is truly full of up and down moments, and so we always try to take it a day at a time as it comes. Today is a glowing moment for us!

13.01.2022 A kind woman found beautiful Tabby hiding in her backyard. After nursing him to health, she took him to a shelter to see if he had a home. He didnt. It was d...iscovered he had dental issues and FIV - both are not life-threatening. So a rescue group came forward to take him until his perfect forever home was found. Instead, he was killed. His story isnt unique or uncommon. Convenience killing is standard practice in some pounds and shelters. Im calling for the government to change the law. Rescue groups should be given access to animals before they are killed, and importantly, it should be mandatory to report kill statistics. Transparency is vital to bring about change. If youre with me - please sign this petition which closes in three days! https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/192

This sort of avulsion injury usually results from vehicular trauma, animal bites, falling from a height or being stepped on so we are saddened to think about what our little kitten has endured before he came into rescue care Under all of his fluff, he is also emaciated and ridden with fleas and worms For now, the lip has been surgically repaired and we hope to have a swift recove...ry without any complications Our little kitten has been cleaned, fed, warmed and is safe in foster care and we will allow him to rest overnight before reassessing with a veterinarian in the morning A sincere thank you to all of those who have been involved in this rescue journey so far. We welcome you to your safe space, Little NIBBLES, and we will do our very best to care for you You can do a BIG part in helping us with our newest foster kitten. To sponsor Nibbles and contribute to his general care and veterinary expenses, please visit our website for more information: https://littlevandfriendsanimalrescue.weebly.com/donate.html

If you are not chosen for PB, please do not let this turn you away from rescue as there will be plenty of other kittens and cats needing a home very soon.... With a little patience, you will surely find your PURRfect pet! Thank you for your support, PB and the rescue team

Thank you for your patience and understanding. *** The kitten season has well and truly begun as we worked tirelessly to trap stray cats and take in surrendered kittens and orphaned neonatal kittens this week We can only imagine how busy and stressful it will become when we are deep within the breeding months... Today... we were notified of 3 kittens that had been dumped in a box and left at a doorstep, just one of the tragedies that we keep coming across over and over again each kitten season We cannot even fathom how anyone would have the heart to do something like this, but we are just relieved that they are now safe with us here in foster care Our newest kittens are frightened and suffering from a mild case of cat flu but with a whole lot of TLC, we are certain that they will recover to full health soon Welcome to your safe space, little friends Please leave a comment to help us to name our newest rescue kittens!

We are just glad that Archie and Teddy are back on their feet now and hope to see them continue on this path to adoption

09.01.2022 Another day means another stray and it seems like our work here is never done Tonight we were contacted about 2 baby kittens who were found in a roof without their mother cat They were brought into rescue care to be hand reared by one of our experienced neonatal foster carers. With our kittens in distress and weighing in at only 90g, it was right for us to intervene in this case. We are unsure of where their mother is, nor sadly whether they are true orphans or not, bu...t we do know atleast that they are now safe and warm in foster care with us At 3 days old, our newest kittens will need to be bottle fed every 2 hours around the clock and kept warm always by our foster carer who will now assume the role of their surrogate mother We welcome you to your safe space, MULDER and SCULLY! 09.01.2022 There are many challenges that we face as a rescue group specialising in hand rearing orphaned neonatal kittens. One of them being that not all of the little ones that come into care with us will make it unfortunately... The matter of the fact is that their chances of survival declines drastically without a real mother cat to give them the nourishment, and innate love and care that they need. We are lucky in the respect that we have a small team of experienced and dedicated ...foster carers with the medical training to be able to see a significant survival rate. Even so, we have sadly seen our fair share of fading kittens over the years... SO, WHAT IS FADING KITTEN SYNDROME This fading syndrome is a blanket term referring to a failure to thrive and the death of a kitten before weaning age. A staggering proportion of young kittens succumb to this illness, at an age when they are most vulnerable to stress and trauma, dehydration, hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, parasites, and bacterial and viral infections. When in crisis, almost all fading kittens exhibit similar symptoms including lethargy, low body temperature, pale gums, slow respiratory rate, and inappetence. In these circumstances, we must provide supportive care immediately and hope they will make it through. The real reality is that alot of the times, they just dont. This is why we cannot place our kittens on hold or advertise them for homing until they can be deemed healthy and stable. Behind all of the cute pictures and the happy posts, so much hard work and heartbreak goes into ensuring that our little ones have the best start to life. Rescue work is real, its hard and its gritty. Our priority will always be the animals welfare and only when we see them through to an age where they are stable, will we begin to advertise them for adoption. On your part, we ask that you be patient with us and keep an eye on our page for when we list our fosters for adoption. Thank you for the kindness and for your continued support. 09.01.2022 The last week has been overwhelming to say the least, but we have been keeping our fingers crossed for some good news or atleast some answers for our SPECIAL NEEDS kittens Cloud, Rain, Misty and Sky. Our little loves have had few episodes of seizures this week but everyone is okay and gaining well. Yesterday, Cloud stayed in hospital at the Melbourne Cat Vets for sedation and a number of blood tests. The veterinary team looking after our kittens suspected a liver shunt to be... the cause of their seizures, but the blood results that came back suggest otherwise.... On one hand, this is good news but on the other, we now have no leads as to what has been going on with our kittens. What we do know is that we are facing something very complicated and that we have a long road ahead of us... The specialist vets will have a discussion regarding our case and will be in contact within the next few days as to what our next steps will be. For now, we will do our best to keep them stabilised, awaiting the next course of action. We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to our very special litter of kittens so far. Every little bit contributed helps us in ways you could not even imagine, and we are so grateful for the support that we have received during this difficult time. We will keep this space posted as to our next steps for our little ones and take it one day at a time Please click on our Fb fundraiser to read more or visit our website to help us to save Cloud, Rain, Misty and Sky. 07.01.2022 We have some good news to share and are feeling a little more optimistic about our very special kittens this week! Foster kittens Cloud, Rain, Misty and Sky have come such a long way since being abandoned by their mother cat at a doorstep and left to perish... Hand reared from birth, our kittens then developed an intolerance to any foods besides milk formula and would exhibit episodes of collapse soon after eating. Perplexed at their condition, we booked them in with a fe...line specialist vet and a number of tests were run to determine the cause of these episodes Although we still do not have a clear explanation as to why this was occurring, we are glad to say that our kittens have not had any seizures for a couple of weeks and Cloud, our most affected, has been placed on medications that have kept her episodes at bay Misty, Sky and Rain have been cleared for their health and have just surpassed 1kg, which means they can be booked in for their vet work for adoption! Only a few weeks back, we never thought we’d see the day that our very special kittens would get to leave their foster home to join their new families, but alas it seems like their big day is nearing We are so PROUD of our kittens and would like to thank everyone who shared and donated towards Cloud, Rain, Misty and Sky We are so grateful for the help and would not be where we are today without your continued support See more

06.01.2022 Hello Friends, We are sure you are all aware of the fact that rescues have been inundated with enquiries of adoption as of late. On one hand, we are glad that we are finding homes for so many stray kittens and cats during this period. But on the other hand, there is a serious concern about what will happen to these animals when people return to work and resume their normal lifestyle... Please be wise and take the time to think your decision through before applying for adopt.... Understand that cats can live upwards of 20 years so this will likely be a lifetime commitment. Pets truly become part of the family and you must expect to make compromises and adjustments to your lifestyle to ensure that they are safe always. It is sad and disconcerting the amount of messages we receive from people who want to surrender their pet for reasons including illness, moving houses, theyve become an inconvenience, theyve gotten a new pet or have had a baby, etc. Although we know that circumstances change, the public do not see what we deal with when the animal arrives into foster care, scared and confused. As much as it sad for us, it is nothing compared to what heartbreak the animal endures when it is disowned. So please think this decision through thoroughly before applying to adopt one of our kittens. Stay safe and be wise, Vivian, Cookie and the rescue team

06.01.2022 Our baby kittens CLOUD, MISTY, RAIN and SKY are looking cosy in amongst their safe space We have our fingers crossed for our little orphans
