24.01.2022 Whos coriander is looking DA BOMB?! Winter is a great time to grow coriander, when we actually get the time to harvest leaf foliage before it rushes off to seed...like it always does in spring, summer & autumn! Even the seedlings planted a couple of weeks ago are looking strong, despite the cold nights

24.01.2022 Its here....help at last! Covering 24 of the most persistent and damaging pest & disease - from aphids, to possums and white cabbage moth - this chart helps to identify and then treat pest and disease in the veggie patch. For each pest or disease type you will find its identifying signature plus methods on how to prevent, cope and then eradicate it. There is also a section on making natural home remedies that can be used to treat any problems that arise. A2 dimensions 420 x 594 mm #pestanddisease

24.01.2022 If theres one crop you can be planting now, its lettuce. All it may want is a bit of protection from cold nights - if its out in the open and your nights get frosty - otherwise its more than happy to be the working dog of your patch #lettucein

20.01.2022 Its tommy time folks, time to propagate your seeds. Either the ones that you saved from last year (like those beauties we got from a holiday rental earlier in the year...) or a new generation of some new/old/favourite varieties. Propagating tommies is a three part process for us but, of course, there are many ways you can do it. Heres our method; 1. Broadcast sow (that means randomly) in some seed raising mix under the cover of a mini greenhouse. Good quality potting mix wi...ll work fine too. The seeds need to be planted about 0.5-1cm deep and mist sprayed daily to keep the soil moist. We keep the greenhouse indoors at night, but put it outside in a sunny/light position during the day. 2. Once the seedlings have germinated and are about 6 weeks old, we transplant into larger 100mm pots, still keeping indoors at night and outside during the day, but ridding of the greenhouse so they harden off (I.e. become tougher). Daily watering, even a couple of times a day, required as the pots dry out quickly 3. Once conditions outside are regularly around 20 degrees or more (late October, early November for Melbourne) we transplant into the patch. #plantingtomatoes #propagatingtomatoes See more

19.01.2022 Asparagus Maintenance: There's a few phases of #asparagus growth, and in some phases you take for yourself, while in others you need to give back to the plant. So when the crisp, tender spears slow down and become too tough once temperatures properly rise (usually late spring/early summer), you need to let the plant bulk up in foliage this allows the #rhizome to reload for next spring's tilt. Once #winter settles in, cut back hard to ground level and give a good feed with manure and wait for the early spring magic to happen again.

14.01.2022 If there’s ever been a time to mulch, it’s now. Here’s a little work we’re doing at our new HQ, setting up our patches at Heidelberg West. The soil has been mellowing for the last month (because we’ve been busy/lazy) and finally we installed our drip irrigation. Then we applied a covering of pea straw to a depth of 3-5cm. Seedlings to come shortly. Photo credit @thommitchell

14.01.2022 Maybe it was meant to be a pot of Marigold at the end of the rainbow.

11.01.2022 What were small, cute, tiny holes through the middle of the leaves (when they were small beasts, merely days ago) have become larger, less cute, massacred plants...it’s now a full blown attack! If you don’t see them, look harder, and harder, AND harder. You’ll typically find them on the inner stems or the back of the leaves. You’ll find their droppings accumulated in the bases of the stem, ah ha, they sure do eat and poop a lot! Yep, caterpillars of the white cabbage butterfly. It’s their peak season now. So time to herd up the attackers, give an application of Dipel and then net to prevent future raids.

11.01.2022 And were on! One of our propagation relief packs - yep we all need propagation relief from time to time - loaded with its soil and seeds and a spray or two of water and a lot of optimism for the coming spring. Each pack comes with the chance to win Full Crate DIY pack (+ netting), winner to be announced once we come off stage 4 restrictions. Thanks to all of those that have taken up the offer. Propagation relief is on its way!

10.01.2022 Yes, we can still deliver our veggie crates but are only taking orders for our Crate only and DIY pack options. Delivery to front yard, or to back if laneway access possible, however will not be entering properties and with no face to face contact #stage4

09.01.2022 Culling seedlings... something that always gets forgotten or is left too late. But when you leave too many plants growing too closely together, few will reach their ultimate potential. Like for a lot of things in life we follow the Goldilocks Principle: not too soon or too late. Too soon and the plants will be too small to negotiate and youll end up culling a bunch by accident. Too late and the plants roots will be so intertwined that there will be difficulty separating them. So do it somewhere in between, letting the best performing seedlings remain. At this stage, the culled seedlings could be planted elsewhere in the garden or fed to your pet rabbit, Cutiepie, that has an insaciable appetite for radish plants #cullingseedlings #culling

08.01.2022 Enamel seed tin and enough heirloom seeds (20 varieties) to get you through the year... including tomatoes, herbs, edible flowers and a bunch of our favourite vegetables. Get spring planning #heirloomseeds #seedtin

08.01.2022 A smart harvest: the two images show pre and post harvesting the lettuce, taking leaf by leaf, to allow the younger inner growth to become our next salad (a week or so down the track)

08.01.2022 About 10 years ago I willingly self isolated in a room for a month and wrote our first book, How to Grow Food in Small Spaces. Never did we imagine that a decaed later it would be re-released....into a smaller, compact version, but with all the goodness of the original. But here it is, in 2020, to help you forge a way through these interesting times and find some grounding in the veggie patch #hellospring

02.01.2022 A closer look at brussel sprouts, which grow up the stem of the plant in between the junctions of its leaves. If youre looking for a science experiment this spring, grow food! But not brussel sprouts, cause theyre an autumn crop... Photo by @thegeogarden

02.01.2022 Call out to BRISBANE FOLK! We recently made a mistake and sent 2 x Full Crate DIY packs to a transport depot in Rocklea...which are now sitting there and looking for a home. They are normally $370 each ($740), but happy to part with them both for $500, and of course the freight it on us ! Need to be collected with a ute or trailer, and soon. Please DM us if youre interested. Thanks!

01.01.2022 LOADED! We always see this dwarf orange loaded with fruit during winter, and over many winters it never seems to get picked. So if ones trash is anothers treasure, what is ones unpicked oranges?.... #trashtreasure

01.01.2022 Thanks to Suzie, who obviously lives somewhere warmer than us (and not in lockdown either), for brightening up our day with her first pineapple on the verge of harvest. Seemed to contrast so nicely with where we are in Melbourne right now. Could stare at it all day. Probably will #mmmpineapple
