21.01.2022 Colour Mixing Lighter Darker Today we read Mix it up by Herve Tullet again, discussing the lighter and darker aspect of the story. The children immediately got excited and said Are we mixing colours today?. Using the clear easel and red, yellow and green paint the children mixed white to make it lighter or black to make it darker. The children enjoyed being able to freely add colour after colour to the easel and watching the depth of the colours change from light to dark. ... 04.01.2022 Remembrance Day This morning during group time we discussed Remembrance Day. During our discussion we identified Army personal, Air Force personal and Navy personal as important people who have contributed to our beautiful country Australia. We also spoke about the symbolism surrounding Remembrance Day like the poppy flower and pausing at 11am. During free exploration time the children were given the opportunity to draw and paint their own Poppy flowers. First we looked at a ...few drawings of poppies and noticed that they were all a little different. We then stopped to consider how big or small we wanted our Poppy flower to be and what shape. The children then enjoyed the process of drawing the outline of their Poppies in black pen and adding red paint on top. We now have a Poppy field of beautifully unique Poppy flowers. At 11am we all stopped what we were doing to observe two minutes silence. To aid our thinking and reflection of Remembrance Day while sitting quietly we watched a two minute animation called, ‘Poppies’ by Cbeebies. During this animation the children watched some of the effects of war through the eyes of animals. Please visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOT5CDnYHEs to watch this clip yourself. We didn’t watch this clip once but many times. The first time we watched in silence. The second we watched and discussed what we could see and shared ideas of how the rabbit was feeling. The children asked many thoughtful questions. They even asked to watch it again and again. Learning Implications The children are making connections to their wider community. They are participating in global traditions and making meaning through discussions. 01.01.2022 Rainbow Serpent To extend on our celebrations of NAIDOC week, the children were invited to create their own Rainbow Serpent. Using cardboard from the recycling collection, a large serpent shape was cutout. The children helped Miss Calista wrap the serpent in right coloured wool. The children discussed the story of the rainbow serpent as they worked together as a team to weave the wool around the serpent. The children noticed our serpent doesn’t have a tongue or eyes. The child...ren brain stormed how they could make some and what materials they could use. The children continued to foster their fine motor muscles, wrapping the wool being careful to keep the wool from tangling. The children used technology, problem solving skills, working collaboratively with each other and showing care if their friends needed assistance.
