25.01.2022 Ovulatory infertility occurs when there is no ovulation, or ovulation is infrequent or irregular. Two soft drinks per day can increase the risk of ovulatory infertility by almost 50%. Just one soft drink a day can reduce a woman's chance of falling pregnant by 25% and a man's fertility by 33%. Along with cutting out alcohol when you are trying to conceive, cutting back on the soft drinks can have a big impact.... Make an appointment today to make a positive change to your diet and improve your chances of falling pregnant.

19.01.2022 Pregnancy is an exciting time, but, it can also be challenging. Many pregnant women experience constipation at some time during the pregnancy. Resulting from an increase in hormones that relax the muscles of the intestinal wall, constipation is one of the unwanted side effects of growing a little human. Some small changes can have a big impact on the severity of constipation. Aim to drink plenty of plain water, increase fibre, both soluble and insoluble and undertake gentle... exercise. Laxative use should be considered carefully and with the guidance of a professional. At Live Better Nutrition, our advice and support doesn't stop with a positive pregnancy test. We are here to help you through the pregnancy and beyond. Get in touch with one of our dietitians at any of our three convenient Canberra locations, or online from anywhere in Australia!!!

The good news is that cooking more meals at home will reduce trans fat intake and, therefore, increase sperm count.... Look out for trans fat in; Fried foods Frozen pizza Microwave popcorn Commercially baked goods, like pastries and pies. 15.01.2022 Check us out!!! Our first ad in the Australian Coeliac.

12.01.2022 Undiagnosed Coeliac disease is linked to lower fertility, increased risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Once following a strictly gluten free diet this risk is reduced to the same risk as non Coeliac women. The issue here is that up to 80% of Coeliacs remain undiagnosed. If you have been struggling with fertility and have not been screened for Coeliac Disease ask your doctor to refer you for a Coeliac serology. #dietitian #fertilitydietitian #coeliacdisease #ttc #fertility #subfertility #infertility #livebetternutrition #gfforlife

12.01.2022 Have you been struggling with fertility? Looking into assisted fertility, such as IVF? Has anyone ever encouraged you to look at your diet?... Maternal weight continues to be one of the greatest factors in sub-fertility (often referred to as infertility). Whether underweight or overweight, less than optimal weight can reduce chances of conception significantly. Did you know that weight loss of 10 - 15% results in spontaneous pregnancy rates being increased by up to 30%? Before starting with a fertility specialist, check your nutritional status and weight with a fertility dietitian. Come and have a chat to a dietitian at Live Better Nutrition. We'll work with you to achieve your goals and improve your fertility and chance of conception naturally or with assistance. Often saving precious time in the process.

11.01.2022 Always more testing happening at Monash. Great news for those following a Low FODMAP diet

11.01.2022 International Coeliac Awareness Day today. Although you may not always get the answer you want, we had two experiences today when out shopping that demonstrated the increase in Coeliac Awareness. We were looking for a treat you our 17 year old Coeliac has been working hard doing her year 12 by remote learning. Both bakeries we went to offered gluten free cakes. Both bakeries were clear and concise with their explanation of why they didn’t consider their cakes safe for Coeli...acs due to the risk of cross contamination. Yes, true, we didn’t end up with a gluten free bakery treat, however, we also did not end up with accidental ‘glutening’. I think this is a win for Coeliac Awareness and such a huge change from 20 years ago when Kai was first diagnosed and most places had no idea how to cater to a gluten free diet. See more

10.01.2022 Now that we have your attention with a nice drop of red..... Did you see the headline last week that showed 70% of Australians are drinking more alcohol than usual, with 33% of us now drinking daily? Whilst drinking may be a method to ease our stress and anxiety about COVID-19 in the short-term, it is also important to keep in mind the long-term health effects associated with increased or excessive alcohol consumption. The Australian Dietary Guidelines and the National Health... and Medical Research Council’s Alcohol Guidelines recommends no more than 2 standard drinks a day, or no more than 10 standard drinks a week, with 2 alcohol free days a week in order to reduce the risk of alcohol-related health problems. Remember, alcohol contains a lot of kilojoules and makes us feel dehydrated if we consume too much. Increased drinking combined with less physical activity and a more sedentary lifestyle can easily lead to weight gain and possibly other health conditions in the long term. Make an appointment with one of our dietitians, who can help with reducing alcohol intake and making positive changes to your diet and lifestyle during this time. We are now offering telehealth consultations as well as face-to-face consults in all three of our convenient locations in Belconnen, Ainslie, and Kingston. See more

10.01.2022 September is PCOS Awareness month. There are many misconceptions about PCOS and this can impact the treatment that women seek. PCOS may be managed with lifestyle change alone, or in conjunction with medication. It can have an impact on your fertility, but just because you have PCOS does not necessarily mean you will have fertility problems. If you do, this may be able to be improved with lifestyle changes to diet and exercise.... Some little facts about PCOS ** It is estimated that between 8% and 13% of Australian women have PCOS **Research indicates that there is a male equivalent to PCOS **Women with PCOS are at an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus ** PCOS can cause unintentional weight gain and weight loss can be difficult. PCOS can be difficult to manage. There is a lot of misinformation around, which makes choosing the right lifestyle changes difficult. During PCOS Awareness Month, why not get in touch with one of the experienced dietitians at Live Better Nutrition. We will work with you and support you to make the changes that are right for your body. www.livebetternutrition.com.au

08.01.2022 With Easter having just passed, we may have some chocolate left over or even bought more chocolate after Easter because all the chocolate was on sale. While many of us continue to work from home during this time, it’s especially easy to eat more and snack throughout the day because the food is more easily accessible at home compared to in the office. During this time, it may be hard to stick to a daily routine. Our physical activity may be reduced with the closure of gyms, or... our diet and eating patterns may be disrupted. Whilst small snacks here and there may not initially seem much, little bits add up and may contribute to weight gain, especially when combined with extended periods of sitting in front of a computer all day. As we head into the cooler months, this weight could stick around for longer than we may like. Have you recently caught yourself getting up from the desk at home and going to the kitchen to find some snacks simply because you could, or are finding that you’re eating more during this time whilst working from home? Here are some simple swaps for your snacks: Have a small handful of nuts instead of eating an Easter egg or chocolate Swap to cheese and 3-4 crackers instead of having potato chips Make some air popped pop corn in the microwave and snack on this through the day. All of these little changes could make a difference to your health. Make an appointment with one of our dietitians, who can provide ideas on making your snacks healthier, and ways to stop snacking as much whilst working from home. We are now offering telehealth consultations as well as face-to-face consults in all three of our convenient locations in Belconnen, Ainslie, and Kingston. Go to www.livebetternutrition.com.au to make an appointment today

07.01.2022 Winter is coming! As winter quickly approaches, are you starting to crave some warm delicious comfort foods? We’ve all heard the phrase winter weight, but have you ever thought about why we call it that? Research suggests winter weight or our tendency to put on a little weight during the cooler months - could be due to several factors: As the weather begins to cool down, we’re more likely to eat warm comfort foods like pasta and big roasts. Why? Our metabolism (the pro...cess of converting food into energy) increases in the cooler months to help regulate our body’s temperature to stay warm. This means we need more food to help with our body’s increased demand. It can also be easy to overeat, and whilst we don’t immediately put on a significant amount of weight after a big meal, overeating combined with our tendency to exercise less during winter can contribute to extra weight gain. Some tips you could try to help with winter weight: - Use a smaller serving/dinner plate for smaller portions - Add more protein and vegetables to meals to fill you up for longer - Have some soup with a slice of bread for lunch or dinner Make an appointment and come and talk to one of our dietitians for some support and advice on how to prevent winter weight this year. Available for face-to-face or telehealth consultations at all three of our convenient locations across Canberra. Do you have any tips to help avoid extra weight gain during winter? Let us know in the comments.

07.01.2022 Coming out of COVID-19: How to manage cafes and restaurants reopening With some of the COVID-19 restrictions beginning to be relaxed, we are all excited about returning to our normal routine. Whilst it won’t be exactly the same, it’s exciting to think that cafes and restaurants will be reopening in the next month or so. It will be a nice change of environment. But, it’s important to remember that when we do eventually go out to eat, planning is important. We don’t want to e...at at all our favourite places all at once, as this could lead to weight gain...and eating out several times in a short period can be expensive!!! Some tips try when going out to eat are: Aim to only eat out twice a week at most Choose healthier alternatives Salad or steamed vegetables on the side of your meal instead of chips Roasted or mashed potatoes, instead of chips Grilled chicken or fish, instead of chicken schnitzel or beer-battered fish Choosing a tomato-based pasta instead of a creamy- based pasta dish Look at the cafe or restaurant’s menu online beforehand, so you have an idea of what you want Request sauces, dressings or gravy on the side, so you can control the amount you have Share meals and dessert between your friends Ask for a takeaway box so you can take what you haven’t finished home and save it for another meal What favourite meal are you looking forward to when restrictions are lifted?

06.01.2022 Did you know that November 19th is World Toilet Day. 1 in 3 people go without proper sanitation. The aim of World Toilet Day is to raise awareness, with the goal of having access to a toilet for everyone by 2030. It is also a day where we are reminded of the need for access to clean toilets by people with IBS, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. For those diagnosed with Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis the Can't Wait programme is in place to provide priority access to a toil...et when needed. If you are a retailer or business you could consider signing up to the programme. Many people with Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis base shopping food stops on areas they have access to clean toilets. Let them know that your business provides access to clean toilets. See more

04.01.2022 Could oats be the key to your fertility? Some foods and drinks impact fertility negatively, whilst others can improve your fertility and chances of conception. Oats are one of the foods that can improve fertility. ... As part of a balanced and well planned diet, whole grains, like oats, have a positive impact on the hormonal environment. Oats have the added bonus of containing a number of nutrients that are important for fertility, such as selenium, zinc and manganese. 04.01.2022 With all the chaos of COVID-19, it is normal to feel anxious. This is a difficult time for all of us, and we’re all trying to stay as healthy as we can. As we try to keep active by going on walks and exercising at home, some of us may be ordering takeaway more often than we usually would to support local businesses, whilst some may be ‘panic buying’ and stocking up on basic, easily accessible, staple foods like rice and pasta. Whilst these are delicious, too much, too often, ...can contribute to weight gain. When this is combined with the more sedentary lifestyle of working from home the potential for weight gain is increased. You may be finding it difficult to decide what to make for lunch and dinner without consuming excess carbohydrates, or, how to cook a healthy, balanced meal with limited food availability. This is where Live Better Nutrition can help. Make an appointment with one of our dietitians, who can give you ideas on how to create a healthy, balanced meal with groceries that are already in your pantry. We are now offering telehealth consultations, as well as face-to-face consults in all three of our convenient locations in Belconnen, Ainslie, and Kingston.

03.01.2022 This is the type of thing that makes me sad for people who think that the way to a healthy diet is by stopping having the foods that they enjoy. I know this is meant as a joke, however, too many of my clients come in with these same ideas and fears about healthy eating. A healthy diet is so much more than restrict, restrict, restrict. There are some simple ways to get on the road to a healthy diet.... Start by adding more vegetables. Check your portions Be aware of discretionary foods - like chocolate or take aways Learn how to quickly and easily read a label to make good choices in the supermarket - this is one of the most empowering things you can do for your health. There are hundreds of diet myths out there. Don't get stuck in a rut believing that the only way to lose weight is by cutting out all the foods you love.
