20.01.2022 The native Paper Wasp is smaller than the European Wasp and lack their vivid yellow markings. They tend only to be aggressive when defending their nests, and are otherwise beneficial to have in your garden. Nevertheless, their sting can be quite painful so it is always best to steer clear. The nest of the paper wasp is a series of cells shaped like a cone and made from saliva and wood fragments. When it dries, the nest is quite paper-like, giving these wasps their name. If ...you see a female paper wasp tapping along a leaf, it’s most likely she is looking for a caterpillar to feed her larvae. If she is flying around an old wooden paling, it’s most likely she is scraping up wood fibres to make a nest. If she is settled on a flower, it’s most likely she is feeding on nectar. Paper wasps are amazing pollinators and feed on many garden pests. Because of this, many people find them a welcome addition to the garden. 14.01.2022 Jewel Beetles are so named due to the gem-like quality of their hard external skeletons, which are brilliantly coloured in many species and textured in a way to have a metallic sheen. Most adult Australian jewel beetles are nectar feeders, and during the warmer season’s these beetles are often seen on the flowers of trees and shrubs. So you may see some during this week’s Pollinator Count. The life span of Jewel Beetles are short depending on the species. Adult beetles may... live for just one or two days up to about two weeks. They belong to the family Buprestidae, which has about 1,200 species within Australia. 10.01.2022 Did you know more than a third of Australian homes contain asbestos even homes built from brick or other materials? If your home was built before the 1990s there’s a good chance it has some asbestos. If you are doing minor work around the home, it's worth taking some time to understand where asbestos might be lurking and how to keep safe. Council also offers a free collection program for up to 10sqm of bonded asbestos to keep asbestos out of the kerbside bins. 10.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! Please put your hands together for brothers Ethan and Dylan from Rydalmere for the most creative entry for the 2020 Children Video Competition. We loved the model they created from all waste items & we definitely need more champions in our community who stop soft plastics from ending up in our waterways. Well done Ethan and Dylan! We hope you continue your great work and find more friends to help with litter clean up! If you want to join Ethan and Dyla...n, check out the Events section of this page or visit https://www.cleanup.org.au/ to find local clean-ups near you. There are in fact two volunteer clean up events on this very weekend in Parramatta! (Sat 14th and Sun 15th Nov) https://fb.me/e/1YjyVWT9Z https://fb.me/e/3d0rYmq7J #nationalreyclingweek
