16.01.2022 You’ve heard of butterflies and moths, but have you ever heard of skippers? Skippers are considered an intermediate form between butterflies and moths. But they are usually grouped with butterflies, because they are day flyers like the butterfly. Skippers have long thin antenna with clubs tapering to pointed hooks on the tip, and a furry body. Like the butterfly, the wings of a skipper are not joined, and when at rest the wings are held over their body. However, the front wi...ng of a skipper are held at a different angle to their back wing. Skippers are great pollinators that might land in your garden looking for a snack. They feed on the sugary-rich nectar that flowers produce. They may not carry as much pollen as bees, wasps or flies, but because they have very long tongues, they are quite good at pollinating plants with deep flowers. 11.01.2022 Did you know more than a third of Australian homes contain asbestos even homes built from brick or other materials? If your home was built before the 1990s there’s a good chance it has some asbestos. If you are doing minor work around the home, it's worth taking some time to understand where asbestos might be lurking and how to keep safe. Council also offers a free collection program for up to 10sqm of bonded asbestos to keep asbestos out of the kerbside bins. 03.01.2022 Jewel Beetles are so named due to the gem-like quality of their hard external skeletons, which are brilliantly coloured in many species and textured in a way to have a metallic sheen. Most adult Australian jewel beetles are nectar feeders, and during the warmer season’s these beetles are often seen on the flowers of trees and shrubs. So you may see some during this week’s Pollinator Count. The life span of Jewel Beetles are short depending on the species. Adult beetles may... live for just one or two days up to about two weeks. They belong to the family Buprestidae, which has about 1,200 species within Australia.
