17.01.2022 'Library staff pulled from their database the phone number of every library member over the age of 70 a total of 8,000 records. Then the librarians started calling those members. All of them. We called them to say hi, see how they were doing, and then see if there was anything they needed help with, such as access to services, counselling support, tech help, that kind of thing. We would then refer them to a service that would help them, said Dempster'

17.01.2022 Another part of our Learning from Lived Experience (LfLE) Suicide Prevention Project is now active. We are looking for as many people to contribute their experiences and solution ideas as possible, the more people we hear from the stronger our collective advocacy will be. So please share far and wide. Survey for people who have personal lived/living experience of suicide (consumer): www.surveymonkey.com/r/YJWZXNN . You may have experienced suicidal thoughts, live with a suici...dal 'part' or survived your own suicide attempt/s. Survey for people who have supported someone through distress/crisis (carer) or been bereaved by suicide: www.surveymonkey.com/r/YJNT7NQ . Choose the survey you think is most appropriate for your lived/living experience, knowing that you may complete both if you wish. The questions can be answered briefly or in longer form, we suggest starting it when you have 20ish minutes to spare. All input is important. PDF versions of the survey can be accessed by following the link and/or if you would like someone to read the questions to you and note your responses please email [email protected] .

15.01.2022 'Some surveys have reported increased levels of anxiety and sadness and attributed those to the pandemic. These are normal and understandable responses to situations involving threats and disruptions to habitual forms of life; the curtailing of social contacts and increased social isolation; and encounters - both actual and virtual - with sickness and death. Though undoubtedly distressing, for most people these are not symptoms of mental disorder and will not lead to enduring... mental health problems requiring specialist therapeutic intervention. As successful public health interventions during previous crises have shown, the most effective support for those who experience such distress is practical. This includes information to support immediate problem-solving, assistance with everyday tasks, ensuring financial and housing security, maintaining trust by openness and honesty, and, crucially, the (re)building of community infrastructures and informal social support networks' See more

14.01.2022 'The 2020 Festival of Now will be going online. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions in South Australia the organisers of the Festival of Now have had to make the sad decision to cancel our face-to-face Festival on Wauwi (Light Square) on Friday 4 December.'

Earlier this year LELAN and TACSI worked with the OCP and people with lived experience to develop a Philosophy of Care to underpin all aspects of the Cent...re. 09.01.2022 'In 2016, the Western Norway Regional Health Authority started to integrate more evidence-based psychosocial interventions into the existing mental health care, emphasizing the right for persons with psychosis to choose medication-free treatment. This change emerged from the debate on the effectiveness and adverse effects of the use of antipsychotic medication. Aspects beyond symptom reduction, such as interpersonal relationships, increased understanding of one’s own pattern of suffering, hope and motivation, are all considered important for the personal recovery process'

08.01.2022 A reminder that from today - Wednesday August 5th - SA has increased restrictions on gatherings and activities involving food and/or drink consumption. Further explanation and additional information related to COVID can be accessed at www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/emergency-declarations .

08.01.2022 'Wear It Purple’s 2020 theme [We are the Change] envisions the importance of encouragement, empowerment and emphasis on making effective change for LGBTQ+ folks and all minority groups'. We stand with rainbow young people and being part of the change.

07.01.2022 'being exposed to the Hearing Voices Approach and the Intervoice Community. This completely shifted all that I knew and would eventually give me the freedom to let go of my secret. I encountered wise, learned and generous individuals both with lived experience and professionals making statements I felt I knew innately to be true; that hearing voices was a meaningful and common experience. It was not an arbitrary characteristic of a psychiatric illness, there are many varied, rich personal and cultural explanations'

05.01.2022 This past week LELAN found out that we were successful with our Information, Linkages and Capacity Building Grant through the Federal Department of Social Services. (Read about the other successful programs through the link at the bottom of this post). The great thing about this grant is that we not only get to introduce a two-year lived experience-led project to South Australia but that we also receive funds to strengthen the capacity of our own organisation, ensuring LELAN ...has strong sustainable foundations for the future. We will soon do a full announcement about the LEDGE (Lived Experience Development, Governance & Engagement) Project, but let's just say we are aiming high with this one! We will provide development opportunities and support to a network of lived experience leaders to be a part of co-design and lived experience-led initiatives, as well as serve on governance and Board level committee's. Through LEDGE we will also work with Boards and organisations to make decision-making spaces more safe and inclusive for people with lived experience to fully show up, be heard and influence change. We will be recruiting to this project soon so keep a look out for information arriving in your inbox - if you are on our newsletter list - and being shared on our social media channels over the coming weeks. https://www.communitygrants.gov.au//31082020-individual-ca

03.01.2022 The Centre will be engaging and welcoming to people in distress, have a strong commitment to suicide prevention, have a significant peer workforce to engage with people, and will be committed to the safety of the people who use the service, and the staff who provide it, Dr Brayley said. Neami will apply a ‘living room model’ that has been successfully implemented in a number of US cities by RI international. People will not wait in cubicles, but be supported in a lounge environment, with interviews occurring in private purpose designed rooms. This will be a very different design to the current ED model.

03.01.2022 [Stats and the lived experience sharing in the article are from Victoria, however the systems issues are the same here in SA] 'Some services were repeatedly exceeding government seclusion targets without consequence. "There's no accountability for services that don't reach the benchmarks," he said.... "There needs to be much stronger leadership in the mental health system to address this issue immediately."'

01.01.2022 On this day and every day, we remember and honour the trans and gender diverse people whose lives were taken away because of transphobic violence. LELAN stands with our trans and gender diverse community as an ally. 'Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people - sometimes in the most brutal ways possible - it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice.' [Gwendolyn Ann Smith, Transgender Day of Remembrance Founder] More information available via www.glaad.org/tdor .
