25.01.2022 Is coaching different to support work? With recent changes with NDIS to embrace coaching in its range of offerings, this is a question that needs to be asked. Mind-Life Project Manager Gill Townsend and Consultant Helen Glover explore this concept in our latest BLOG. https://www.mind-life.org.au/post/what-s-the-difference #livedifferentthinkdifferentbedifferent #mindlife #coachingvssupportwork

24.01.2022 Mind-Life latest blog explores the power structures often inadvertently highlighted when we use uniforms and branding in service delivery. The concepts of othering and outing came strongly though the early empathy interviews with people who use services with comments about the use of uniforms and branded vehicles. This blog ponders on those themes and the constructs of power. Do you wear a uniform? Who wears uniforms? Police, soldiers, nurses, nuns, priests school child...ren. Where do you see uniforms these days? The ubiquitous use of logos has arisen now we see uniforms on every corner a logo here and there to market and brand and identify. 24.01.2022 The Mind-Life initiative is seeking an external experienced program evaluator or evaluation team that can measure the quantitative and qualitative outputs, outcomes and processes of the Mind-Life project. The Mind-Life initiative utilizes a range of platforms to develop its resources and reach its target stakeholder groups including, social media, product development and learning opportunities with regional and rural communities. It intentionally utilizes an iterative human-c...entered design and as such, its important for the evaluation to track its processes. This evaluation would be attractive to those with an interest in service modelling, social impact, human-centered design, and knowledge translation. Please email [email protected] to obtain a copy of the EOI brief.

22.01.2022 Can't wait to get back in the design room with some of this crew in Bundaberg on Friday! We will be testing and trying our first round of prototype resources I wonder what new ideas will emerge?

22.01.2022 MIND-LIFE UPDATE This week the Mind-Life Project team are focusing on Empathy Interviews. Mind-Life Project seeks to solve one of societys most sticky problems ... creating community connection and a sense of full citizenship for the most vulnerable.... Our interviews aim to deeply understand the challenges and barriers to community connection for people who experience psychosocial disability. This is the first step in our design thinking process.

20.01.2022 Meet Shelley (Me) from our Mind-Life Project Team. I am the one behind the social media and promotions for Mind-Life and am absolutely loving working with the rest of the team on engagement strategies and integration of arts and health. I come from a background working in the arts for local government, the not-for-profit sector and as an independent artsworker and artist. I have worked in major strategic initiatives, creative recovery, events and festivals over the last 25 years. As a supporter of people in my life with lived experience, I am hoping to contribute my skills to offer better life opportunities for people with mental health struggles.

20.01.2022 Connection is so important a sense of belonging and being a part of something is one of the most fundamental aspects of life. As humans we are meant to be together. Brene Brown describes connection as:... The energy that exists between people when they feel they can give and receive without judgement; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship. There are truly beautiful elements to that seemingly simple statement, sadly for many, those magical parts of connection and freely given non-judgemental relationship remain elusive or unavailable. The first part of Mind-Life project is to examine community connection. To understand what it means to be connected and part of community, particularly when many people have experienced exclusion or have felt ill equipped to participate because of the challenges they face. Exploring and understanding both connection and disconnection from personal perspectives will lead us to design new ways to think and respond. Look out for how you can be part of Mind-Life Gillian Townsend Project Manager, Mind-Life

19.01.2022 Pat Deegan always an inspiration. If you are looking for deeper connections and powerful ways of working follow the link and join the conspiracy of hope.

19.01.2022 We have two online Information Sessions to introduce you to the Mind-Life Project this week hosted by our Project Manager Gill Townsend. You can register for the sessions at 3pm on Wednesday or 10.30am on Friday. Further details in our Facebook events!

19.01.2022 The Mind-Life Project team is embracing Human Centred Design Thinking. We are immersed in Empathy Interviews and thoroughly enjoying the process and the insights that are already jumping out. But what is an empathy interview? Empathy Interviews dive into understanding from an investigative point of view, how the person feels, thinks, sees and speaks about the problem. It is deeply understanding from the other persons point of view exactly what their "pain" and "gain" poi...nts are. Pain points are those situations that drain energy. Gain points give life and energy. From here we will have the information we need to start to ideate and prototype resources through our design labs.

19.01.2022 Join our Project Manager Gill Townsend for an Online Information Session that will introduce the Mind-Life project to you and let you know how you could be involved. Help us to reframe psychosocial disability, reduce stigma and improve community access for people who experience psychosocial disability. Two separate sessions are being held on WEDNESDAY 10TH JUNE @ 3PM and FRIDAY 12TH JUNE @ 10.30AM. To RSVP and receive the link to the online session please email [email protected]

18.01.2022 We are thrilled to launch our new Mind-Life website. This will be the home of new and developing resources as the project works through the human-centred design process to create them. You can sign up to the Mind-Life e-newsletter and keep up to date on the progress of the project. http://www.mind-life.org.au

16.01.2022 can you help us ? Mind-Life Project seeks to solve one of societys most sticky problems: creating community connection and a sense of full citizenship for the most vulnerable. We are seeking to interview people who: have a psychosocial disability, and are supported by an NDIS package; or are eligible but have not accessed NDIS funding support. What you need to know: Interview will take approximate 1.5 hours either face to face or via Zoom with one of the Project Team members Participation is voluntary and you can choose to stop the interview at any time. 15.01.2022 We agree it’s a great time to learn about Queensland’s Human Rights Act and how it helps us all be better citizens

15.01.2022 I saw this quote on someone else's Facebook feed this week and it resonated with me .... What does it take for us to be human with each other? What might get in the way of authentic human connection?

14.01.2022 This is what a Mind-Life Virtual Design Lab looks like! Working out the pain and gain points from a story that reflected a Groundhog Day experience.... Mind-Life boldly disrupts the construct of psychiatric disability as we have known it - not by trying to change the person, but by challenging the narrative, creating resources and hosting events that build opportunities to LIVE different, THINK different and ultimately BE different ... Thoughts? #livedifferentthinkdifferentbedifferent #mindlifematters #humancentereddesign

14.01.2022 Have you ever been to a concert and seen people wearing an ACCESS ALL AREAS lanyard? These are the people that no questions are asked when they want to access an area. What would it look like for us all to have an ACCESS ALL AREAS pass to our own lives , making it barrier free to engage in community life , when we like, how we look and with whom we like. Helen Glover and Gill Townsend from the Mind-Life team explore this issue in our BLOG and are currently posing this questi...on to participants in our Design Labs. Would you like an ACCESS ALL AREAS pass? https://www.mind-life.org.au/post/access-all-areas

13.01.2022 doing a great job

12.01.2022 Mind-Life designs and delivers provocative resources and events. These resources assist you to avoid the pitfalls in both providing and accessing help. We are looking to understand the nature of these pitfalls a little more so we can co-create even more resources for you and others. We hope that you can help us.... The questions we would like to know more about are: # How does discrimination and stigma impact on peoples’ lives that you work alongside? # How has discrimination and stigma impacted your life? We are seeking to interview service providers who: + provide psychosocial supports; + work in the Community managed mental wellbeing sector. As well as people who: + have been labelled with a psychosocial disability, or + are supported by an NDIS package; or + experience a mental illness but have not accessed NDIS funding support. What you need to know: * Interview will take approximate 1.5 hours either face to face or via Zoom with one of the Project Team members (dependant on your location). * Participation is voluntary and you can choose to stop the interview at any time. * All information collected is confidential and only used for the project. * Project participants will be provided with regular updates about the progress of the Project To find out more please contact Project Manager Gill Townsend [email protected] or call 0455 021 229 #mind-life #livedifferent #thinkdifferent #bedifferent #pschyoscocial #disability #stigma #access #reducestigma

12.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who came along to the first Mind-Life Design Lab in Cairns on Friday. The ideas generated through the human centred design process led to concepts for several new resources including apps, podcasts and toolkits that work towards solutions to the five key questions developed out of empathy interviews: - How might we (HMW) create resources so that Access All Areas passes are available to everyone in our community? - HMW create resources that help us to d...ance better together? (when we seek out or provide services) - HMW create resources that prevent groundhog day experiences? - HMW create resources that help us to be a cheerleader in each others lives? - HMW create resources that help you to not OTHER & OUT me? (even when your intentions are good) We have the Bundaberg Design Lab coming up and look forward to further exploration of these ideas and then testing the prototypes!

11.01.2022 Pat Deegan is always an inspiration offering hope and strong leadership in self-determination. Mind-Life is really interested in her newest evidence based work in Personal Medicine Coaching and are excited to see this come to Australia. http://ow.ly/aRh750A1jih

10.01.2022 Elena (El) is the Project Officer for the Mind-Life journey and her role is to co-ordinate the operational side of the project as well as to help with anything and everything the team needs to get done. El had previously worked for Bridges Health & Community Care for close to 4 years before relocating to Brisbane in 2019. During her time with Bridges, she developed a better understanding of the importance of an organisation whose focus is to encourage good mental health in t...he community. When offered the opportunity to work with the Mind-Life Team whilst continuing to live in Brisbane, it was a no-brainer. El is excited to be part of a project that aims to, reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, reframe the terminology to make it more society friendly and, work towards a positive outcome where every member of society is able to live their life to the fullest.

10.01.2022 How well placed are our communities and human services so people can have access all areas pass to these? http://healthwest.org.au//hea/social-inclusion-definition/

10.01.2022 MIND-LIFE MATTERS One of the many concepts being explored through Mind-Life is social prescribing and the potential it creates with community connection. This is a developing practice where health professionals link patients to social resources in communities rather than services. This podcast discusses prescribing art for mental health with some of the leading experts. https://www.abc.net.au//prescribing-art-for-menta/12523324

08.01.2022 Introducing our fabulous Mind-Life Consultant Helen Glover from Enlightened Consultants. "I have always been a bit of a disruptor, wanting to stretch the ways in which we organise and provide assistance to those who want and deserve more for their life. The Mind-Life project bravely tackles and rethinks the notions of stigma, discrimination, citizenship, community and how services can respond so people can lead and live their best lives, despite the social impacts caused by ...mental illness and its treatments. These areas, important to me to negotiate, and undoubtedly remain important for many others, as they strive to live beyond the perceived limitations set by themselves or others. I have developed a passion for service design , especially using human centred design approaches. My role in the project is to ensure it remains true to its human centred promise. I am sure MindLife will stretch me as I am asked to stretch it." See more

04.01.2022 Online opportunities to participate socially have been important for many of us during the pandemic. We love the work of Computer Choir, an online choir run by the team at Cheep Trill. This Brisbane-based choir has gone online recently running their first term. We are currently working with the Cheep Trill team building a project that will reflect the human centred design processes of the Mind-Life project. In the meantime, enjoy the wonderful outcomes from the first term... of Computer Choir. ----------------------------------------------- Real Life Computer Game Performed by the 100+ singers of Computer Choir Words, music, choral arrangement and conducting by Emma Dean Mixing and mastering by Tony Dean @ Tiny Dream Studios Music video choreographed and edited by Katie Swan Administration and logistics by Corinne Buzianczuk https://youtu.be/ba1AKX2ScaU

04.01.2022 I love this. Do what you love and love what you do - is an important message for all of us What I particularly appreciate is the description of the image from Open Future Learning and the use of the word "supporter" Not support worker - but supporter - like a fan - someone who is totally on your side The concept of "supporter" or "cheerleader" came out strongly in the empathy interviews Mind-Life conducted ... How might we create resources that help us to be a cheerleader in each others lives? What does a supporter mean to you?

04.01.2022 Every year 3 December is internationally recognised as the day to promote the full and equal participation of people with disabilities and to take action for the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of society and development Its more than a day - its a commitment in every aspect of our society to ensure we build the best communities that provide opportunities for all people to exercise fundamental human rights and to lead extraordinary lives What actions wi...ll we take to remove the barriers that exist for people with disabilities? Mind-Life project boldly disrupts the construct of psychiatric disability as we have known it not by trying to change the person but by challenging the narrative, creating resources and hosting events that build opportunities to live different, think different and be different. www.mind-life.org.au https://www.idpwd.com.au/ https://www.un.org//convention-on-the-rights-of-persons-wi

03.01.2022 I'm really enjoying the work of Open Future Learning I love their use of visuals to open conversations and challenge stigma I wonder how we could develop and shape resources like these in relation to reframing psychosocial disability?

03.01.2022 What a great opportunity to join with the Queensland Mental Health Commission in hearing about the findings of the Australian Productivity Commission inquiry into mental health What role can we all play in being part of a change for new ways of thinking about mental health in our community?

03.01.2022 The series of Mind-Life Design Labs brings together diverse groups of passionate people interested to solve a wicked problem that has seemed complex, intractable and insoluble. Creating responses so that people feel their mental illness experiences do not define or stigmatise them nor preclude them from engaging in a full life. This is a problem worth solving. Adopting a human centred design process, seeing the problem with fresh eyes from those who experience it, each de...sign lab will ideate, prototype and test new ways so that people can feel welcome to fully engage in their social and community life, in spite of experiencing the challenges that mental illness may bring. Passionate people that can see the world in new ways are welcome: e.g. people who experience the problem; people that provide responses; community leaders; community members; creative thinkers; critical thinkers; and outside thinkers. Cairns: Tuesday 18 August Bundaberg: Tuesday 1 September Mount Isa: Wednesday 7 October Venues TBC Time frame: 10.00am to 4.00pm lunch supplied If this is you, wed love to hear from you. 01.01.2022 I've been thinking about this quote this week It resonates with me because its something I might often say - you cant change the past but you can do something today that may have an impact on tomorrow. I also really connect with it because it is attributed to C.S. Lewis the author of the Narnia books. As a child the words and stories of C.S. Lewis bought me hope and wonder. I could imagine and believe in something bigger than my world. Mind-Life challenges us to live differen...t, think different and be different outside the perceived limitations caused by the symptoms of illness. I wonder what words and stories lift and inspire you and invite you to imagine different possibilities?

01.01.2022 How Might We create resources that prevent groundhog day experiences? Lets learn from Phil Connors and work out a better way together at our Design Labs. See our Mind-Life Facebook Events for details. https://www.facebook.com/pg/livedifferentthinkdifferentbedifferent/events/
