23.01.2022 Some of you may have found our stocks of our smaller sized crickets are very low or non-existent at the moment. This is due to a major issue with our hatching rates where we have only been producing less than 10% of our normal hatchling numbers. The situation was further affected by the loss of power for an extended period in the aftermath of last week's storms. This has meant everything we hatch has had to go towards maintaining our breeding stock and we have none available... for sale. We hope we may have solved this issue now but unfortunately the damage has already been done and it will be some weeks before stocks will be back to normal. All being well pinheads should be available again in about two weeks, extra smalls the week after that, smalls the week after, etc. We should have mediums and large available next week but they will probably go out of stock after that until the new hatchlings grow through to size. Our wood roaches are slowly building back up in numbers and we are hopeful that we should have some stock of those ready to go in about two weeks. in the meantime mealworms, calci worms are all still available. We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing our customers but we are doing everything we can to rectify this situation as quickly as we can.

22.01.2022 Just wanted to thank all our customers for their patience over the last period while our stocks have been down. Just to give you an update of where we are with our insects, we seem to have solved the problem of our cricket hatch rates and hatching numbers are back up to normal levels and at this stage seem to be quite stable. We now have smaller sizes available this week (pinheads and extra smalls) and, all going to plan, small crickets will be available next week, mediums th...e following week and large still about three weeks off, but at least we seem to be on track to getting back up to normal stock levels. Our wood roaches have taken longer simply because they are so much slower in their growth rates. We just have to be very careful with the stock levels as if we let the numbers get too low it could be 6 months or even longer before they build back up again. Checking the stocks this morning there seem to be good numbers building up in several of our tubs and at this stage we hope to be able to offer some woodies again next week, although numbers will be restricted for a little while until we are sure the stock can be sustained. Thanks again for hanging in there with us and rest assured, we are doing everything we can to try and build those numbers back up as quickly as possible.

21.01.2022 Silkworms are now up on the website ready to go. At this stage I have only had time to put the handy packs (http://www.livefoods.com.au/live-insects/handy-packs) on the site plus the food packs (http://www.livefoods.com.au/acces/insect-care/Silkworm-food). I will try and get the bulk quantities up later this week but if anyone is interested in bulk quantities in the meantime please either message us on Facebook or email us at [email protected] Still have to put up the information regarding preparing the food for the silkworms but just wanted to get something out there in case anyone wanted to order this week.

19.01.2022 This Tuesday 18th December is our last shipping day for the year and stock is already running low on some items. No shipments going out between Christmas and New Year, so next shipping dates will be Wednesday January 2nd for postal items and Thursday January 3rd for courier items. Merry Christmas and safe and happy New Year to all our customers and we look forward to continuing to supply you in 2019.

18.01.2022 Well our last shipping day of the year has come and gone so if anyone is wanting to order next shipping date won't be until Tuesday January 2nd I'm afraid. Hopefully, most if not all insects will be back in stock and available for that week, however, traditionally it is the biggest order week of the year for us so I advise getting your order in early. Available stock will be allocated to our standing regular orders first, then on a first come first serve basis, so come the beginning of next month some stocks may already be getting low.

18.01.2022 ON BEHALF OF ALL OF US HERE AT LIVEFOODS UNLIMITED WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS FOR THE BUSINESS AND SUPPORT THIS YEAR AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING TO SUPPLY EVERYONE WITH ALL THEIR INSECT NEEDS IN 2018. WE WISH EVERYONE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

17.01.2022 PACKAGING CHARGE REDUCTIONS In an effort to try and streamline the ordering/payment procedure and implement a fairer system for our customers, we have been reviewing our current online system on our website and will be making a few changes and improvements in the near future. One of the first changes which we have just made is to adjust the freight charging system. We have had a few enquiries concerning the handling charge which has been a standard additional charge on all ou...r orders since the website was developed. This is a legitimate charge based on the fact that, to ensure the safe and healthy transportation of our live insects to your door, we need to use custom-made packaging and labeling providing them with appropriate protection while still allowing adequate ventilation and highlighting the needs of the insects to our third party carriers. To this end we import high quality calico bags, which breathe efficiently yet resilient enough to stop insects chewing through and are made with quality workmanship (trying to reason with an irate postmaster when a bag seam has failed and his post office is full of escaped cockroaches is not an enjoyable task!). We also have our shipping boxes custom-made with specifically designed cardboard knives to punch ample ventilation holes on multiple sides of each box. This ensures excellent air flow through the box to reduce heat stress during shipping, meaning our insects arrive in excellent condition. Additionally, we use large, bold labels on all our insect shipping containers highlighting to our carriers the nature of the contents and how they need to be cared for in transit. All these features means we have the confidence to guarantee the condition of our insects at delivery. The main issue has been our website software will only allow one handling charge which has to be imposed on all orders regardless of size. We didn't believe this was a fair system especially for customers placing smaller orders or even just ordering accessories, so we have decided to remove the separate handling charge and add an additional cost to the freight more appropriate to the size and type of goods ordered. Anyone ordering from this evening will find the handling charge has now been removed and, even with the small increase in freight, around 90% of all orders will now be significantly cheaper, some with price reductions of up to $5.00 per order. We hope our customers will find this a much fairer and more equitable system. We would also appreciate your feedback on this and any other aspects of our operation such as product quality, level of service, ease of ordering, etc.

16.01.2022 We had some great feedback from our last post on mealworms and there is clearly a massive amount of confusion out there, particularly with regards which species of mealworms are being used. This seems to be mainly due to the different suppliers using the term 'Superworm" for different species with the added problem of chemical modification of some "superworms". Our advice on that would be to ask the question of which species are being offered (Tenebrio or Zophobas) and then s...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Just an update on stocks at the moment. Mealworms are still in very short supply nationwide due to production issues a major supplier in Queensland is experiencing. We have reasonable numbers of large giant mealworms at the moment but mediums and smalls are still low and in very high demand. We should have some quantities of all sizes each week but these are selling out quickly. Calci worms are proving very popular and we have actually sold out completely for next week but sh...ould have more to go up on the website by the end of next week. Silkworm demand fluctuates quite a bit from week to week so it is often tricky to make sure we always have stock of all sizes. If they are showing as being out of stock, there should be fresh stock coming through the following week. Large wood cockroaches are a bit of a concern at the moment. They don't seem to handle shipping during the heat and humidity of summer as well as the other insects or the smaller sizes of roaches. The fully mature cockroaches and to a lesser extent large crickets, are very susceptible to stress probably because their system is already under great metabolic stress after reaching reproductive age, producing eggs, vying for mates and fighting with other males, etc. By packing up these insects and shipping them around the country in the heat and humidity of the Australian summer seems to tip some of them over the edge and some customers have experienced significant losses, which we have replaced or credited, while other orders have been received in perfect condition with almost no mortality. Hopefully, the arrival of some cooler weather will alleviate this problem but we are restricting the quantity of large woodies going out at the moment until we are confident the problem has been solved.

14.01.2022 The Christmas/New Year period is always a bit of a nightmare when it comes to shipping live insects, because of all the public holidays, an order missing a delivery run might mean the next delivery opportunity could be 5-6 days later. With this in mind, our final dispatch date of the year will be Tuesday 19th December (remember all orders are dispatched on Tuesday of each week), with the next dispatch day being Tuesday January 2nd.

13.01.2022 With Christmas approaching fast, remember to get your orders in early to avoid missing out. Stocks of some items are still a little limited. Large giant mealworm numbers have improved and we also hope to have better numbers of small and medium mealworms from next week. Large and medium crickets are still a bit low and we are running out each week but hopefully that will improve in the next few weeks.

10.01.2022 In the last of the posts concerning mealworms, I just wanted to tackle a couple of the great myths surrounding these creatures. The one that comes up most frequently is that all mealworms must have their heads chopped off before they can be fed to anything, otherwise they will eat their way out of the stomach of the animal they were fed to. Sorry, but what a load of garbage!!! I am sure there was some albeit very tentative basis to this story at some stage. My guess would be ...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Excellent day at the RepX Expo in Brisbane yesterday. Great to meet some of our long-term customers face to face and hopefully found some new ones to give our insects a try. Very busy day, especially the first few hours, sold out of all of our silkworms and cricket bags by about 12 o;clock. Will have to make sure we take more next time. Thanks to all the RepX organisers and staff, very professional set up. Here is Hayley on our stand looking well stocked before the stampede happened. There wasn't much left there by the end of the day!

07.01.2022 Just received our new shipment of Mistking starter systems and accessories direct from Mistking in Canada. Exchange rate was a killer this time but we have decided to keep the prices the same on all items. Mistking is the premier manufacturer of top quality misting/humidifying systems ideal for any terrariums, enclosures, tanks, etc.where humidity needs to be controlled, manipulated and monitored. They are used worldwide by many of the foremost zoos, aquariums and breeders be...cause of their reliability, flexibility and quality of their components. Yet they are also ideal for keepers with only one or two enclosures to ensure the correct captive environment is maintained both for general welfare and also for the seasonal stimulation required by many species for successful breeding. Unlike many of the other commercially available misting products, Mistking units are robust and dependable giving you that peace of mind that the appropriate captive environment is being maintained at all times. Our first Livefoods Mistking system was installed on our enclosures here in July 2011 and has been working non-stop ever since then without missing a beat, that's a pretty good record. Now is the perfect time to get your Mistking system installed and set up ready for the breeding season. It will provide you with excellent control of your animal's environment at your fingertips with up to 8 individual misting sessions available each day adjustable in 1 second intervals for absolute precision and, with each starter kit able to operate up to 10 misting nozzles, you can take care of multiple enclosures at the same time. This is the ideal way to ensure your animals remain happy and healthy in their enclosures while also maximizing the chances of successful captive breeding in many species.

07.01.2022 Just a reminder that we will be experiencing another scheduled power outage tomorrow, Tuesday 20th March so we will be out of contact for most of the day. Hopefully, this will be our last for quite some time! For those of you with orders due for dispatch tomorrow, this will not affect your orders being shipped, although the confirmation emails, which are usually sent out Tuesday afternoon, may be a little later this week depending on when power is reconnected.

06.01.2022 I have 4 juvenile long-tailed rock monitors (V. kingorum) for sale at the moment, hatched about two weeks ago and enjoying regular feeds of extra small crickets. Great little monitors small, attractively marked and not too flighty. $400 each or all four for $1200.

02.01.2022 With spring just around the corner, I thought it might be useful to go over our ordering system to make sure our customers aren't left with hoards of clamoring mouths and nothing to feed them when they wake up from their winter rest. All of our orders are shipped on Tuesday of each week as this is when we are serviced by our freight carriers and also to ensure all orders are delivered well before the coming weekend. Our website states that the deadline is midnight Sunday for ...orders to be received and paid for to ensure shipping the following Tuesday. We will always try where possible to ship orders received after this deadline, even up to Monday lunchtime for courier orders and Tuesday morning for some express mail orders but to be safe try to have your order in before the Sunday deadline. Priority for supply is based on when the order is received so it can be beneficial to get the order in the previous week especially when demand is high and stocks are low. With busy lifestyles, it is often easy to forget to place your order in time and suddenly you find yourself out of food with hungry animals and the only option is a trip to the nearest pet shop to grab a couple of expensive packs of undernourished and dehydrated insects that prove to be disappointingly few and far between when you finally get them home. At Livefoods, we offer a service for customers to set up a standing order, which can be shipped at any frequency you require, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, etc. for your own personal needs. This takes all the guesswork out of having to remember to order and you will always have a supply of fresh healthy insects as and when you require them. All we do is hold your credit card details on file and every time your order comes up for shipping we debit the card and send it out, easy as that. If you need to change the quantities or frequency of your order just drop us an email, there are no minimum or maximum time limits or quantities other than our normal minimum quantity restrictions listed on our website for regular orders. While we don't offer any discount for standing orders, another added benefit apart from the convenience is that standing orders receive first priority for available stock. When the demand is at its highest and stocks limited, all standing orders are fulfilled first before any regular orders so you will never miss out on your order when you need it. To set up a standing order just drop us an email at [email protected], I am sure your precious animals will thank you for it in the long run.

02.01.2022 Energex have planned scheduled power outages for our insect facility all day on Tuesday 13th March and again on Tuesday 20th March. This will mean we will have no internet or phone available to us on these days. If you are trying to contact us, please be patient and we will get back in touch with you as soon as power is reconnected. We hope this won't cause too much inconvenience to our customers.

02.01.2022 Look forward to seeing everyone at the RepX Expo in Brisbane on Sunday. Livefoods will be there with specials available on our insects and Mistking misting systems so come and say hello. https://www.repx.com.au/

01.01.2022 We receive many inquiries about mealworms at Livefoods and there appears to be a huge amount of uncertainty and confusion about the different types and their use as a food item. We thought it might be useful to try and explain the current situation with mealworms and dispel some of the myths surrounding them. In this first post we will discuss some of the different types of mealworm currently available in Australia. The first point to understand is that all mealworms are the ...Continue reading
