25.01.2022 Miroslav Volf is such a delight to listen to, this time speaking about his family and what they taught him about forgiveness in the face of tragedy and hurt, and joy. He always strikes me as such a calm, principled, insightful thinker and his ideas on faith in the modern world are worth seeking out if you are tired of chauvinism and the blinkered ping-pong that passes for public discourse on the dreaded R-word.

25.01.2022 Merry Freaky Christmas from District Two. It looks like a horror film but this is where the majority of Christmas decorations *in the world* are made. And seriously, it is called District Two. #livegently #christmas #capitalism #consumerism

24.01.2022 So much to learn.

23.01.2022 Forget flying cars, this is more like the future city we need. #livegently #yes #brightfuture #sustainability #liveability #happiness

22.01.2022 We've been dedicated followers of Josh's House, gleaning ideas for our sustainable nest conversion. Some great questions, resources and ideas in this post and on the Josh's House site.

21.01.2022 What a great idea!

21.01.2022 "All the world is sacred for those who know how to see." I was thinking of IS and their sad and destructive theology when I read that. But then I looked at the picture and realised, I struggle to see sacredness in the urban; as much as I appreciate its comforts, I resent its banality and the way the horizons of humans within it shrink leaving them with impoverished experiences and understandings of the natural world. The destructive impulse of the likes of IS are present throughout humanity; our own capitalist societies tolerate the destruction of ecosystems and natural heritage far older than the priceless treasures of Mosul, Nimrud, Ninevah and Palymra. The sacred is reflected in that puddle, a reminder that even within our urban cocoons we remain a part of nature, with a responsibility for its care. #livegently #sacredground

19.01.2022 Our culture is so disconnected from the natural world and it is making us and the world sick.

19.01.2022 A beautiful idea from Wollongong Botanic Garden. #bookcrossing #commons #welovethegong

18.01.2022 I'm tired of buying plastic-wrapped recycled toilet paper since our local Woolies stopped stocking paper-wrapped SAFE, so I thought I'd give Who Gives A Crap a try. Love that they give 50% of their profits to WaterAid to help give 2.5 billion people access to a toilet and the good health and hygiene that comes with that. #livegently #whogivesacrap

18.01.2022 I love the Midas touch of a community solar farm to power the local sewage treatment works. It's not sexy, but it's practical and even better, now operational.

17.01.2022 Myth #7 of 8. You don't often get the chance to say Paleoclimatology...what a word! Hopefully you have some success with this answer.

16.01.2022 The Spirit of Things is one of my favourite podcasts to listen to (yep, I'm a massive fan of Radio National), and I'm sure this one will be a cracker. So many interesting conversations going on about how we relate to nature and what the implications are on our belief systems/ideology and most importantly the way we live our lives, individually and together. #livegently #arrcc #climatechange #gardening #foodsecurity #spirituality

14.01.2022 Two paragraphs to go on The Happy Life by the ever-wonderful David Malouf. Definitely recommend. And a whole list of references, both art and literary, to follow up on. Love that!

12.01.2022 Humans: whatever our failings, curiosity is definitely one of our good points! #innovation

11.01.2022 Love the tin can candle holders. What ways do you repurpose or upcycle household items?

10.01.2022 Some food for thought. I think we need to revisit the perspective of pre-WW1 thinkers and dreamers who had a longer-term eye on the future.

10.01.2022 Thanking the delightfully liquid heavens right now for some welcome relief from the extended period heat and humidity here in Wollongong. (We really are spoilt normally!) We even used the air-con today since the lovely nor-easter was absent. Watching Josh's House about how easy it is to build (new) sustainable low energy and *comfortable* houses and even whole suburbs . . . solar passive design, efficient glazing, lots of insulation, natural ventilation, white roof, PV and solar hot water are the key common elements. Can't wait to move on to stage two of our project, where we finally get to implement these! #sustainablehouse #carbonneutral #climatechange #livegently

09.01.2022 Some nifty ideas here, but the winner for me is the Palm Oil Investigations app for spotting and avoiding palm oil nasties.

09.01.2022 So exciting to see this actually being installed.

08.01.2022 Fun planning our new kitchen today. So excited to discover our local kitchen manufacturer stocks Green Tag certified, Australian-made engineered (ie recycled) stone *and* that Laminex comes as EO as standard now! #cleangreen #ecobuilding

08.01.2022 Ah! We've had 10 beautiful days on our summer road trip north-by-northwest in NSW taking in Dorothea McKellar country - sweeping plains, rugged mountain ranges, gentle rain, cool forests and jewel seas - and making some memories together as a family. A snippet of reading over the last week - can't remember by whom - posited the delightfully freeing idea that holidays are not so much, or not merely, an escape from our everyday lives but the most exquisite and real experiences. Perhaps Leunig's city rats below are planning their next moment of exquisite reality! #roadtrip #summerfun #makingmomentsmatter #livegently

08.01.2022 Meeting with our builder tomorrow. Fingers crossed for stage two of our eco nest to become a reality this year.

08.01.2022 "The great step forward of Paris, while still a long way short of what is needed, could set the world on a path where much more becomes possible."

08.01.2022 3 weeks into our bathroom project and the end is in sight. Looking forward to our lovely Australian-made fittings, Australian-made 6-star taps and lots of natural light and fresh air. Huge change to the dark, damp and dank disaster it was! #nest #sustainable #littlethings #supportlocal

07.01.2022 Sad news of the death of a beautiful, joyous, life-filled colleague. Grief accretes: past losses recalled and freshly felt.

07.01.2022 Winter's horizon Curving endless blue beckons I yearn to journey

06.01.2022 Smiling right back at you! Great story to lift a rainy day :) #happiness #stateofmind #wiseman

06.01.2022 We have a wonderful group of people in Wollongong who have organised a Backyard Citrus Festival When Life Gives You Lemons in celebration and encouragement of growing your own citrus delights. So many of us have old orange trees, trusty Eureka lemons or cumquats growing in our backyards planted, a generation ago perhaps, but maybe need some inspiration or some willing recipients for the fruits of a heavily laden tree! In our backyard we have a marvellous orange tree which pro...duces better and better harvests every year and is just c.o.v.e.r.e.d in oranges, even with the flying foxes taking their fill. Going to take some excess harvest to the next citrus swap or donate at the library but in the meantime, I've been experimenting with homemade citrus cleaner, homemade dried peel and now going to try some whole-fruit orange icecream. If you are in Wollongong, check out all the fab events, or maybe take some inspiration for your own town :) #backyardbounty #whenlifegivesyoulemons #sharingeconomy #homemade #localheroes See more

05.01.2022 Reading a little from Wendell Berry on what not taking thought for the future might mean: "There is in fact much at hand and in reach that is good, useful, encouraging, and full of promise, although we seem less and less inclined to attend to or value what is at hand. We are always ready to set aside our present life, even our present happiness, to peruse the menu of future exterminations." His point? To learn from history, to act today to prevent the evils of yesterday from spoiling today, and so shaping the future. Or, "maybe we could give up saving the world and start to live savingly in it. If using less energy would be a good idea for the future, that is because it is a good idea." Find out more: http://www.yesmagazine.org//wendell-berry-climate-change-f

05.01.2022 Pretty excited . . . we have a start date for our first stage in the nest project. Nice builder, reasonable price. Now to see how it all pans out! Time for some "before" shots and a positive blog post :) #sustainable #possibilities #nest

04.01.2022 Do you a stack or ten of these plastic numbers? Now that all our music is on the hard drive, I might suggest this to the in-house tech expert ;)

03.01.2022 Goody! My favourite magazine arrived today from across the mighty Pacific. YES! Magazine

03.01.2022 These Livewell Clusters are launching soon around Australia. So many exciting initiatives are starting from little things - small neighbourhood groups around the country, tapping into a groundswell desire for change and helping to make it inevitable. #livegently #livewellclusters #changeiscoming

03.01.2022 A different way of doing small-scale finance . . . perfect for funding a short holiday or solar hot water or a new energy-efficient appliance, or whatever. Everyone chips in an everyone benefits.
