19.01.2022 Our latest TripAdvisor review says this: " stumbled across her story on facebook. this short play features daily at 12pm at the cascade womens factory. a husband and wife team who act out a play of the deportation of a convict woman. the play gives a detailed insight into what this woman and others endured during their incarceration.the main actress had me feeling like i was right there with her in time. i laughed with her and i cried with her while she portrayed the role. ve...ry informative and worthwhile! highly recommend for all ages" Good to know that FaceBook is doing its part in telling people to come and hear the women's story - everyone goes to Port Arthur but the women's site is the Cascades Female Factory. If you are a local and you haven't visited ever or recently, come and see what has been done since Port Arthur took over the site some 8 years ago. Make sure you pay the extra though and do either a Heritage Tour or our play, Her Story. You will learn very little by simply paying for the guide yourself around tour.
15.01.2022 Every year, Somerset College from the Gold Coast have a week long school camp to Hobart. They come for all sorts of reasons one of which is to experience Her Story at the Cascades Female Factory - they love it. Today we took four classes in two shows back-to-back. They also come to see snow! Unfortunately the Tasmanian weather proved a little fickle and the past week has been quite mild. It is going to snow tomorrow down to the 600 metre level but they will have left to fly back to sunnier climes - sorry Somerset College!
15.01.2022 It's quiet at the Cascades Female Factory ATM! After several days of no audience at all we finally took two LOVELY people out on our wonderful drama today. Lesley, cried all the way round - bless her! Meanwhile, around 16 other people were on site taking the "guide yourself around tour" . This is up to choice of course but what a shame to miss the deep emotion of Her Story with perhaps a Heritage Tour to unpack the many layers of the women's' stories? Pay the extra people and make this one of the enduring memories of your visit to Hobart. ...........
15.01.2022 Echidna Alert! When you perform Street or Strolling Theatre as we do on Live History, you have to be prepared for whatever the street, or the weather, throws at you. Not, strictly, during the performance but, afterwards, when we were returning to our car there was a lot of excitement - an echidna was strolling along Degraves Street! Anton, one of the lovely tour guides at the Cascades Female Factory was shepherding this youngster ( he hadn't yet learnt his street smarts) along to a safe place as there was lots of traffic. The dark blob in the background is Prickles.........
14.01.2022 Joanna's Birthday! When we arrived to perform Her Story today we saw a group of people including a young girl, pointing to us and saying "There's Mary & the Doctor!" They had OBVIOUSLY been before! It turned out it was Joanna's 13th birthday and her top elected thing to do was Her Story - she said she has been around TEN times!!!... Happy 13th Birthday Joanna and THANKS for supporting the female convict story. We are so glad you enjoy coming so much. See more
11.01.2022 Spurwing Plover On Guard! Why would a spurwing plover lay her egg in such an inhospitable place? We are having to guide our large audiences well around her to avoid anyone stepping on her egg!
10.01.2022 We performed our last Her Story on March 20th this year. We had planned to retire it at the end of June but covid stepped in and the Port Arthur Authority was forced to close all its sites including the Cascades Female Factory. That has now reopened but Mary and Her Story is no more! I was so glad I didn't know that was to be my last performance! Now we are concentrating on running our lovely Holiday Cottage 19 Blue at beautiful Blackmans Bay and offering our wonderful show The Sheep's Back to groups and dinners. We come to you!
05.01.2022 A SECOND Plover's Egg!! When we arrived at the Cascades Female Factory today to start our dramatisation, Her Story, we checked the status of the plover's egg. There was a sign in place warning visitors not to disturb but we found a second egg! We placed them together as surely if the birds are going to incubate them they must be in the same nest? Isn't this a bit late for Spurwing plovers to be nesting? I thought they nested in late Winter? Perhaps Don Knowler our Mercury bird columnist can enlighten us?
05.01.2022 Yesterday, Live History performed Her Story, our convict drama, three times! The first was for Martins Albury Coach Group, the second our normal 12 Noon show for the general public and the third was a fundraiser . From The Shadows. www.fromtheshadows.org.au... It is time for the stories of these women and children to emerge from the shadows of the past. This wonderful project is raising funds for bronze statues, created by Irish sculptor Rowan Gillespie, which will be placed, at significant sites, to commemorate the convict women and their children who were transported here during the 19th century. The first of these are already in place and can be seen outside MacQ1 alongside Hunter Street down at the wharf. The photos show Di Snowden with the miniatures of the statues, some of the 25 strong crowd who attended and Atlas the Dog (who thoroughly enjoyed the show!) with owner Mick.
05.01.2022 Seven Month old Harvey was SO good on Her Story today. He seemed to be taking it all in! Mary always gets very emotional when there's a baby in the audience. The Nursery Yard and having her baby taken away all seems too real ............... Her Story is performed every day at 12 Noon at the Cascades Female Factory (closed on Wednesdays during winter).
03.01.2022 Introducing Donald! The Cascades Female Factory has a new inmate - except he can also be an outmate as he can slip under the gates whenever he wants. He appeared today just as the audience was being ushered in to meet Mary James. He was also there at the end when Mary was trying to do her serious monologue which is HARD when you've got a DUCK waddling around at your feet. Talk about being upstaged!!!
