13.01.2022 Washing done right

12.01.2022 Let this sink in..... It’s absolutely mind boggling if you think about it. Your horse gets absolutely nothing out of being competitive for you. Not a darn thin...g. Of course horses are bred for specific jobs, or they’re bred to be athletic to a certain degree. However, horses don’t wake up thinking about chasing cans, or cows, or flying over jumps. They have no idea how much money is added to the pot. They have no idea that this is a qualifier. They have no idea that this is the short go. And DESPITE us... DESPITE our nerves, our flaws, our incorrect ques, our huge emotions, they get the job done to their very best ability. Even when we fail them by letting our emotions get in the way, they come back and they try again. For US. Whoa. Let that sink in. If only we could all be so understanding. To think of an animal that is forgiving and flexible enough to put up with the repetition of practice, the intense nerves of the rider, the stress of hauling and still meet you at the gate for scratches is MIND. BLOWING. If you haven’t done so lately. Thank your horse. If you’re successful, thank the horses that put you there and made you. Thank the horses that gave everything they had for you simply because you ASKED them to. If you’re still on the journey to success, thank the horses that made you fall in love with your sport and who have helped give you the confidence to want to learn more and be better. We can never stop learning as horsemen and horsewomen, and by continuing our education every horse in our future will be better off. Next time you head to the arena leave your ego at the door and thank your horse! -Samantha Roffers Photo credit: Nicole Poyo Photography

04.01.2022 Mindset Tip How to deal with competition nerves. Well its all in the preparation. Whenever I work with riders who suffer from competition nerves I generally fin...d they have the same preparation patterns. Most of the riders start stressing the night before. Have I forgotten something I have to make sure that I am not going to be running late again It's that dressage test that I always forget what to do after the halt at C What if there is a brick wall in the jumping round? I bet I am going to fall off again just like last time But often it's not just the words that we are thinking we also get emotionally involved in our thoughts, leaving the dreaded experience and feeling the anxiety of forgetting the dressage test and having to be told by the judge what to do next re-living the fall that we had 4 weeks ago at a specific show jumping fence getting lost on the way to the competition and arriving with only 15 min to go before having to enter the arena and of cause forgetting to put on the 'lucky' socks! If that sounds familiar let me assure you that you are not alone. As I said before it's all in the preparation. If you prepare for disaster you will attract disaster. Not because you are not a good enough rider but simply because you have set yourself up for failing. Now lets be honest for a moment and take this a little further. What happens when all your predictions come true? Are you secretly relieved and sought of happy? It's ok, you can admit it to yourself and no one else has to know. See, I told you that I would forget the dressage test It's the GPS' fault, I knew I couldn't rely on it Brick walls and I just don't go together The moment I realised I was wearing the wrong socks it was all over! We do kind of feel good when we are right, don't we. Now the great thing here is that you already know that you are capable of making predictions and achieving them. All we need to do now is to make the right predictions that have an outcome attached that you can be proud of. The key here is to focus on the positives. Think about what end result you want to achieve and then work backwards. Lets start with the night before I have followed my checklist and have packed everything in the car that I need My alarm is set early and I have an extra hour planned into my trip I have ridden the dressage test before and I can remember it I am going to focus in the show jumping and with my determination my horse is going to jump every jump All socks are lucky socks!!!!!!! Relax the night before a competition and look forward with anticipation of a great outcome. This will not only put you into a positive mindset but it will also relax you physically. After a good night sleep you will be refreshed and you can focus on your affirmations again on the way to the competition I have got everything I need I am early with plenty time to get warmed up I am prepared and know my test I have done my homework with the jumping and I will be right. Using your positive affirmations in the car on the way to the competition helps you to bring your focus to the outcome that you want and it directs your brain looking for reasons to achieve the great results. At the competition have people around you that support you physically as well as emotionally so when you come out of the ring you get constructive feedback and not just meaningless criticism. Remember that at the end of the day you need to be the one who is happy with your performance, not the judge or your friends and family. Be kind to yourself when you make mistakes and look for the learning and how you can improve next time and the go back to focus on what you did really well. At the end of the day most riders are competing for fun and to have a social experience not to make yourself sick. So enjoy it and have a great time. Tanja Mitton

01.01.2022 Mindset Motivation What would you say if I told you that 90% of the time your horse does exactly what you ask it to do? Generally we focus on our horse and try ...to make it do what we ask of it. We are often quick in criticising the lack of response and the seemingly disobedient horse that continually ignores our aids and signals we apply on a regular basis. We work hard on getting the horse to listen to us and perform to its best when at a completion and of course behave when we are in a lesson or out on a trail ride. After all we have spent a fortune on riding lessons, watched endless hours of training DVD’ s and read every article on dressage and jumping exercises in every book there is, so we are the expert and we expect our horse to acknowledge that. To top it all off we feed it every day, look after it and love it more then we love ourselves. So surely it’s not asking too much! Well if that has been your view up to know I hate to burst your bubble because guess what?! Your horse is doing exactly what you ask of it and even more, it is a direct reflection of who you are on every given day!!!!!!!! Now I know that might come as a shock and many of you don’t like that idea but before you through the magazine in a corner, just give me a moment to explain. There are two ways in how we communicate with our horse; one is through our body language the other is through our energy. Body language is formed by our thoughts and our ability or lack off balance. We have all heard of a balanced independent seat, which means being able to walk, trot and canter without stirrups and reins. Basically being in harmony with our horse and riding without interfering with the forward movement. Our thoughts impact our body language. If we feel confident and comfortable, we are more likely to sit up straight and stay relaxed and focused which in return translates to our horse that we are the leader and our aids are given clear and fair. If on the other hand we are being yelled at in a lesson or feeling nervous at a competition our body language becomes compromised and full of tension so our horse only interprets the communication that gets through, which is often a pulling and clamping which results in a tug a wore and endless fighting, making both horse and rider feeling uncomfortable and scared. Energy is the way we feel about us and our environment. Have you ever noticed that when you are angry or stressed that your horse generally is a lot harder to catch then when you are relaxed and full of love? Your horse picks up on your energy just like you are picking up on other people’s energy. Have you ever entered a room where two people just had an argument? Even if you don’t know that they had the argument you feel it and it’s not a good place to be. Well your horse is no different; if you are angry or stressed it’s just not nice to be around you. So let’s cut our horses a bit of slack and start to acknowledge that we get what we ask for and therefore we start to pay more attention to what they are trying to tell us. Your horse is a perfect reflection of who you are at that given moment. You need to see them as a valuable feedback rather than the enemy who tries to make you look bad. Step1. Spend time to work on your seat and balance. Step2. Pay attention to how you feel. Use visualisation to get your thoughts positive and on track. Step3. Take a moment to calm your breathing and centre your energy before getting near your horse Step4. Use your horse as honest feedback on how you are doing Step5. Leave your ego at the gate when you riding your horse. Step6. Be open to learn and improve all the time, no matter how experienced you are. Step7. Learn to forgive yourself and your horse for your mistakes in the past and move on. Horses are so much more than just a companion and friend and even more than a competition partner. They are here to teach us about ourselves and help us to learn and grow; we just have to be prepared to listen. Enjoy the journey Copyright Tanja Mitton
