25.01.2022 HAPPY WORLD PHYSIO DAY! Celebrate the day by booking in for an appointment with your favourite physio. In all seriousness, physio has come such a long way since its earliest documented origins of physical manipulation and exercise for therapeutic purposes dated all the way back to 1813!... A few fun facts about physiotherapy: 1. Physiotherapists need to have an in-depth knowledge of the entire musculoskeletal system (and more)! The body contains 840 muscles, between 206-270 bones, 220 nerves and much more! 2. Originally, physiotherapists were all women! This was most prominent after the polio outbreak where many women were employed to help sick children with their movements. 3. Hippocrates, the "Father of Western Medicine" used practices similar to physio as far back as 460BC.

21.01.2022 THORACIC STABILTY SERIES 2/3 - WALL SLIDES WITH FOAM ROLLER The serratus anterior (also known as the boxer’s muscle) is a core muscle of stability in the shoulder and thoracic region. It originates on the 1st to 8th ribs and attaches on the middle border of the shoulder blade. The action of the serratus anterior is to pull the shoulder blade forward around the thorax. 1. Start standing with foam roller placed horizontally on wall, band around wrists and forearms pressing i...nto the foam roller. Ensure spine is neutral throughout movement. 2. Maintain slight tension against band and forearms parallel as you roll the forearms up the wall, maintaining pressure on the foam roller. 3. Only go as high as you can maintain neutral spine. 4. Maintain same distance between hands and forearms as you roll back down to start position. 5. Repeat for 8-10 reps. See more

20.01.2022 A 2010 study by van Middelkoop et al showcases evidence from multiple randomised controlled trials that exercise is effective at reducing pain and improving function in the treatment of chronic low back pain. There is no evidence that one particular type of exercise therapy is clearly more effective than others. So get moving everyone! Any time is a good time to start exercising...so why not now?

16.01.2022 THORACIC STABILTY SERIES 1/3 - SUPINE ARM FLOATS The thoracic spine is the core of all upper body movement - the ribs connect to the thoracic spine and the shoulder blades rest on the rib cage. The upper thoracic spine works as one with the lower cervical spine (neck) and the lower thoracic spine works as one with the lumbar spine (lower back). Arm floats with a band is the perfect stability/motor control exercise for this region of the body. ... 1. Start lying on your back with neutral spine, knees bent and feet flat. 2. Place a light loop band around the wrists, pressing outwards slightly with elbows soft and arms relaxed on the hips. 2. Lift the arms up overhead and stop right before you feel your thoracic spine start to move. Always imagine SPACE BETWEEN THE ARMPITS as you do this, in order ensure there is no gripping of the lats, pecs or upper traps. 3. Maintain space as you lower back down to start position and repeat. You may feel this exercise working the muscles in the arms, shoulders and rhomboids (between the spine and shoulder blades). Try for 12 reps and 2-3 sets! Let us know how you go

13.01.2022 The transverse abdominis plays an important role as one of the main muscles of core stability. The functions of the transverse abdominis include: - Support for the abdominal wall in maintenance of posture - Trunk movements including flexion, extension, lateral flexion... - Raises intra-abdominal pressure e.g. for forced expiration, defaecation, micturition and parturition - Supports the posterior wall of the inguinal canal via the conjoint tendon According to a 2013 systematic review by Martuscello et al, the top 5 bodyweight core exercises based on transverse abdominis electromyography (EMG) activity are: 1. Reverse crunch 2. Stability ball pike 3. Roll down 4. Chest lift 5. Stability ball knee in The study noted that transverse abodiminis EMG activity is similar during body weight and ball exercises. Stay tuned on our instagram (@livelyphysiotherapy) to see how to perform each of these exercises in the studio/at home!

13.01.2022 STUDIO VS. HOME PART 6 - SUPINE ARM ARCS Supine arm arcs is the perfect way to introduce core stability training into your exercise program. It involves controlling upper and lower limb movements while maintaining neutral spine and core activation. Our at home alternative is supine arm arcs on the mat... 1 Start lying on your back with a theraband/cables attached from behind you, slightly higher than the height of your head. 2 Bring the legs into table top and arms straight, in front of your shoulders to begin. There are 3 main variations you may perform from this starting position: Variation 1 - PULLDOWNS Breathe out and pull the palms down to the floor. Breathe in and return to straight arm position with arms directly in front of shoulders. Ensure the back does not arch when arms return to start position. Repeat. Variation 2 - SNOW ANGELS Bring the arms out to the side at 90* from the body. Breathe out as you pull the palms down to the hips. Breathe in to return to start position with arms at 90* to the body. Repeat. Variation 3 - TRICEPS Bring the elbows in by the side, as close to the ribcage as possible, and ensure elbows are hovering just above the floor. Keep the elbows locked in this position. Breathe out, hinge from the elbows and pull the palms down to the floor. Breathe in to return to start position. Repeat.

13.01.2022 BALANCE & PROPRIOCEPTION! Balance is the ability for us to maintain even weight distribution while maintaining an upright posture. Proprioception is the ability for us to sense where our body is in space.... These two components are important for function in activities of daily living and at higher levels including sport and recreational activities, especially those that involve jumping and agility. Balance is often overlooked as a key component of training and we tend to take it for granted until it's too late! Here at Lively we recognise that balance is an integral part of any exercise program and we definitely have some fun ways to do it! Our Friday morning pilates clients can show you how it’s done!
