24.01.2022 Who else does this?

23.01.2022 Goodness me, the libraries are displaying lots of fine books this week on the topic of... poo! We are partnering with Queensland Health to promote the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program with banners and bollard covers on display at all our libraries. We have LOTS of great books (especially for young readers) that may start conversations about bowel health, with great resources to inspire older people about digestive health too. Check out the QLD Health website for more info: https://bit.ly/3iPDszk

22.01.2022 Not just for the kids! "Morrigan Crow is a cursed child. Blamed for all of the misfortunes in her small town, set to die at midnight on her 11th birthday. Things aren’t looking good for the girl with the black eyes. The story follows Morrigan who narrowly escapes death and discovers a whole new magical world, full of action and adventure! Enter Jupiter North, a quirky character, who takes Morrigan under his wing. To avoid returning home and facing certain death, Morriga...n must compete in challenges to secure a place in the prestigious Wundrous Society to stay. This book is the first in a series written by Brisbane author Jessica Townsend. It’s one of those just one more chapter reads all the way to the end! I’m definitely looking forward to reading the sequel, Wundersmith: The calling of Morrigan Crow and the third instalment is due in July 2020! The book has also been picked up by film producers so best get in and read it before the movie (because we all know the books are ALWAYS better)! As an adult reader I thoroughly enjoyed this and would highly recommend it for both young and old." - SH Check out a copy from the library >> https://bit.ly/2ZX72fM

Under the black cat is a foldout of 11 images: Customs House, Denham Street, Palm Avenue Botanical Gardens (2 images), Fitzroy suspension bridge, East & Denham Streets tramway, The Convent High School, Victoria Park, Lakes Creek Meat Works (CQME), Picnic Resort Nankin Creek, Girls' Grammar School, Boys' Grammar School. 11.01.2022 Happy World Kindness Day! Our staff at the Northside Library were thrilled to receive these little Random Acts of Kindness notes recently! Thank you! What is your favourite act of kindness?... #Kindness #NorthsideLibrary #RandomActsofKindness #worldkindnessday #makekindnessthenorm

10.01.2022 We celebrated Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori (Maori Language Week) last week by diving into some great works on BorrowBox. We always enjoy going back and reliving a cult classic like Once Were Warriors by Alan Duff. Did you know Duff tried writing a thriller as his first novel, but it was rejected. He burned the manuscript and started writing Once Were Warriors, which had an immediate and great impact. For those keen to expand or learn Maori, make sure to add the bestselling Maori Made Easy by te reo Maori advocate and professor Scotty Morrison (Ngati Whakaue) to your collection.

09.01.2022 An early photo of Bouldercombe, circa 1890s/1900s. Located along the Burnett Highway, the discovery of gold in 1865 placed the area of Bouldercombe, then known as Crocodile Creek, on the map. By the end of 1866, the Crocodile Creek Goldfields had a population of approximately 3000 men, women, and children plus approximately 1000 Chinese all trying their luck. Also by this time hotels and shops were being erected and a township was beginning to form. Unfortunately resentment b...y some of the European miners of the Chinese miners over perceived incorrectly marked out claims, the lack of successful mining conditions, and general discrimination, a riot occurred on 7 January 1867 where the Chinese miners were attacked, their tents burned, and goods stolen. After the riots, as well as lack of success and other mining areas opening up, the population declined until 1894 when William Usher discovered a gold reef located on the foothills of the town at the end of what is now Mt Usher Road. Mining was not to last, and the area became known for farming; the orange orchards of the Dwyer brothers were especially well known. The Bouldercombe was also known as Mt Usher and Unionville. The origin of the name is unknown, however it more than likely refers to the boulders that were in the Creek and around the area. #FridayFlashback #CentralQueenslandCollection #RockhamptonHistoryCentre

08.01.2022 As Americans are tucking into their Thanksgiving dinner this weekend, we take a wander down memory lane to meet one well known and beloved American soldier who was stationed in Rockhampton during World War Two. Jack Quincy Fleming from Wyoming United States of America, arrived in Rockhampton at the beginning of June 1942 as part of 41st Infantry Division of USA Army where he is billeted at the Rockhampton Showgrounds, and worked in the Ordinance unit that had workshops in th...e Medcrafs Biscuit Factory on the corner of Alma and Fitzroy Streets. During this time a Rocky lass caught his eye, and Jack and Joyce Woodward were married on 21 December 1943 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Serving in New Guinea and the Philippines, Jack’s war ended on 9th September 1945. Jack, Joyce and family spent a short time back in the United States before deciding that Rockhampton was home, moving back in 1946. Jack Fleming was well known for building, and lovingly caring for St Christopher’s Chapel which was built by the US troops in 1943 as a non-denominational Chapel. Jack Fleming died in 2011 at the age of 95. #FridayFlashback #RockhamptonHistoryCentre #AmericansinRocky

08.01.2022 Jeanette simply couldn't wait to get started reading and found a perfect spot at the Southside Library to tackle her new book. We absolutely LOVE seeing fantastic reading moments like this at our libraries! We look forward to seeing you soon.... #Read #QueenslandLibraries

07.01.2022 This photo of the Kalka Hotel, located on the corner of Lakes Creek Road and Water Street, North Rockhampton was taken around the time of the great 1918 flood. The publican at that time was Alice Ellis whose husband James Ellis had the licence from 1916. The building in the photo dates from 1904, as the original building was burnt to the ground in 1904. Alice didn’t have the hotel for long after the flood as she transferred her license of the Kalka Hotel, to Grace Moylan. #FlashbackFriday Photo caption: Neg No. 3461 Kalka Hotel

07.01.2022 Veronica Roth is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Divergent series, the Carve the Mark duology, The End and Other Beginnings collection of short fiction, and many short stories and essays. Roth wrote Divergent, her first novel, during the Christmas holidays when she was at university.

06.01.2022 "The story is about a kid called Ricky, who flees from Child Services into the New Zealand wilderness with his bushman foster father Hec. The characters in this movie are great. A lot of the comedy comes from exaggeration and characters blowing things way out of proportion. Both Ricky and Child Services officer Paula think they are the main character of a movie script they’re writing inside their own heads. This is juxtaposed against the more taciturn Hec, who brings the more serious and emotional beats of the story. I also really like how creative Taika Waititi is with the soundtrack. I also loved the Lord of the Rings reference!" - CN Hunt for the Wilderpeople is available on Kanopy with your library card.

04.01.2022 Anne Rice was born Howard Frances O'Brien. When she went to kindergarten, she told her teacher to call her Anne because she was tired of having a boy's name. When she married her husband, Stan Rice, she took his last name and has used the name Anne Rice ever since. Throughout her career, Rice has published under several names. She adopted the A.N. Roquelaure pseudonym, taken for the French term for a type of men's cloak, in order to grant herself a certain amount of creative freedom from the works for which she was already well known. Rice has also published under the name Anne Rampling.

03.01.2022 Two years ago, this is the conversation that 11 year old Jack had with his mum at Gracemere, 'If we had to evacuate because of the fires in CQ, what would you bring?' His mum answered, 'Oh, there's not much chance we'd have to evacuate!' Well, a little while later we DID have to evacuate to Rocky. I remember that the sky was very orange and it was very hot. It also took us ages to drive out of Gracemere. We didn't know we had to evacuate until our friends told us!
