18.01.2022 Great to hear from you Dr Ted!

17.01.2022 Thanks for following Liver Kids Australia. We've been battling with some tech issues but email is now up and running again so please get in touch. We know we've been a bit quiet this year but will be blogging again soon and a great new website is also on the way. Let us know what you want to read about so we can include it in the build.

17.01.2022 Another reminder (as if Liver families need one!) of how important it is to talk about Organ Donation. Hope you're in your Jerseys for Jersey Day and taking the opportunity to spread the word. We can't wait to see a post-transplant update on Kayden and Indigo!

17.01.2022 With school heading back you might be worried about the risk of coronavirus and your liver kid. This is a good article from the ABC which provides some advice for the general population. Please note - if you have any concerns about your child you should contact their medical team. https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-symptoms-how-/11904062

15.01.2022 This is from a UK perspective, but is an important reminder about thanking donor families. Ask your liverkids hospital team about it if you aren't sure what to do. https://www.theguardian.com//why-the-families-of-organ-don

15.01.2022 We know how hard it can be to organise travel insurance for those dreaded 'pre-existing conditions'. We want to share that we have had a very positive experience recently with TravelCard Australia/Maldon Road. Obviously individual cases may vary but we found their premium very reasonable and would recommend you try them if you are after a travel insurance quote. They are partnered with Transplant Australia: https://transplant.org.au/travel-insurance/

15.01.2022 Go Liver Kid Layla!

15.01.2022 With the usual disclaimer to discuss these issues with your child's medical team...this recent ABC article suggests that the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (currently being used in the US and UK, made by Pfizer and Moderna) will be recommended for immuno-suppressed people: https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-covid-19-vacc/12989514

13.01.2022 For those of you keen to encourage others to 'flatten the curve' and protect the vulnerable this article from the US makes some great points: https://www.huffpost.com//disabled-immunocompromised-peopl

13.01.2022 This is a great story from NSW: https://www.maitlandmercury.com.au//meet-brayden-the-lit/

11.01.2022 Today is DonateLife's Thank You Day. On behalf of the Liver Kids who have received a life saving transplant, we say THANK YOU to all the Donor Families who make the brave decision to make their worst moment, someone else's best moment. #donatelifetoday #thankyouday #liverkidsaustralia #liverdisease #livertransplant #giftoflife

11.01.2022 This is a really useful piece from the BBC about protecting your mental health from coronavirus anxiety: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-51873799

09.01.2022 This is from a reputable UK source and suggests that immune suppression in children does not increase the risk of severe Covid-19: https://www.bmj.com/content/369/bmj.m1802 (Always talk to your child's team for specific information)

09.01.2022 Fantastic story, featuring more than one superhero - Bray, Dr Thomas and the Donor. Share your stories and thanks this week and make the most of DonateLife Week 2020.

08.01.2022 For PSC families, something you might want to check out: https://pscsupport.org.au/

08.01.2022 If you check out this video you will see a couple of Liver Kids members

08.01.2022 We have put a post up on our website about how to set a routine for school at home. We aren't saying you should do this - as of this morning Australian government advice is that schools should stay open. But, there may come a time when you need to keep your kids home. The post is specific to high school aged kids, but there are suggestions for adapting it for younger ones. https://liverkids.wordpress.com//parenting-a-liver-kid-in/

08.01.2022 The Liver Kids AGM will be held via Zoom on Monday 21 December 2020. Members should have received a notice by email, so check your spam folder if you haven't seen it! This year we are looking for new committee members so please get in touch if you are interested in being part of the Liver Kids team in 2021.

06.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who participated in the recent AGM. Rachel's Chair's Report is available as the latest blog on our website. http://ow.ly/cTxS50xHqw1

06.01.2022 Liver Kids were thrilled to be invited to attend the launch last night of the Parliamemtary Friends of Organ Donation. The guests heard from both sides of the organ donation story with Liver Mum, Bethany Scholar making an inspiring presentation about her daughter, Emmeline. Thank you Bethany for raising awareness of childhood liver disease, as well as organ donation with this group of our nation's decision makers.

04.01.2022 If there is one thing the parents of a Liver Kid know about it is the importance of handwashing. So this ABC article about how important it is in protecting against coronavirus/Covid-19 is at least a little reassuring. The 2 key things - wash hands frequently with soap and warm water, and don't touch your face between washes... https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-face-masks-hy/11958878

04.01.2022 Our local GP has provided this information about reducing risk of Covid19 infection. Please read and share with your networks (perhaps nothing new to you, but might be to others ) Tips to minimise the risk of infection with COVID-19! The evidence so far indicates the virus is spread from person to person through small respiratory droplets. Wash your hands &/or use hand sanitiser whenever you cough, sneeze, blow your nose, care for someone who is sick, before cooking and eat...ing, before unloading the dishwasher, after touching your face and after going to the toilet. Social distancing - keep 1.5m from others where possible when outside the home, especially if you or others are unwell. Cough or sneeze into your elbow or into a tissue. Place the tissue in the bin and wash your hands. Do not shake hands, hug or kiss on the cheek, with the exception of close family members. Try not to touch your face with your hands. You will be surprised how often you do it once you become conscious of it. Be aware that touching 'fomites' is a potential mode of COVID-19 transmission. A 'fomite' is an inanimate object that has been contaminated with a virus. This can happen when the virus is expelled in droplets following a cough or a sneeze, which then fall, contaminating surrounding surfaces. Contamination may also occur following being touched by a person who is contagious. Viral transmission may occur after touching a contaminated surface and then touching your mouth, nose, eyes or food. Examples of fomites: your mobile phone taps, turn off the tap using a paper towel door handles elevator buttons menus, consider how you may handle a menu and then handle food, eg bread, with your hands supermarket trolley handles self-serve grocery check-out touch screens ATM keypads pedestrian crossing buttons (use your elbow) shared pens (keep one with you) money - cash/coins. Try to create some lower-risk areas. For example, you could sanitise your hands before entering your car. Our new family policy is for everyone to wash their hands on entering the house. Please forward this email widely to friends, family and colleagues. If together we can reduce COVID-19 transmission, we can help protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

01.01.2022 Liver Kids Members, don't forget to lodge your proxy for the AGM on Monday night! Or send us a message if you want to join us on Zoom. https://form.jotform.com/203415809385863

01.01.2022 This is a great story about research into metabolic liver disease. Thanks Julie and Paul for your commitment to helping other liver families! https://www.smh.com.au//how-four-year-old-charlize-s-liver
