19.01.2022 The end of MAYLANDS WATERLAND? The City of Bayswater’s draft budget for the next financial year, released today, proposes to close the facility permanently. The... budget will be brought before Councillors for approval next Tuesday. The proposal might surprise many in the community. In 2016 the City spent $50,000 on a comprehensive community consultation process; participants were unanimous in their view that the pools should be kept, given their value in introducing young children to water in a safe environment. In June 2017, the previous Council made the decision to allocate $3.2 million (over three years) to refurbish the existing pools and design a new café for the site. Seven months ago, in December 2017, the current Council considered the project again and instructed the City to continue the work on design and construction. Since then, $20,000 has been spent. Now, the City’s administration is proposing to close the Waterland and instead build a new big playground. No further details on the playground proposal are available at this stage, and Councillors will not be asked to commit to it as part of the budget, so ALL options (including location) will be on the table for Council consideration at another time. Needless to say, I have significant concerns with this proposal: - I see the Waterland as an asset to the City and its residents, not a burden. Despite it being a 40-year-old facility, and without much promotion or a good café, attendance has actually increased over the last three years: 29,045 people visited in 2015-16; and 35,708 in 2017-18. - Summers in Perth are likely to get hotter and families will need more (not fewer) options to cool off, especially with less and less space for backyard pools. - The community has been consulted and made its views clear. Two public commitments to keep the Waterland have been made. Ratepayers money has already been spent. Nevertheless, a closure is now being proposed without explicit justification for the change. - Such a major, irreversible decision should not be mentioned in one line in the budget papers. However, I have only one vote on Council and will not be able to save the Waterland by myself. Whether or not you oppose the proposed closure, I’d like to encourage you to: - Share this news with others who use this facility. - Contact councillors from all wards and let them know if the Waterland is important to you. http://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au/council/elected-members - Attend the budget meeting on 3 July, at 6.30pm, at the Council Chambers, 61 Broun Avenue, Morley. All members of the community can ask questions during ‘public question time’.

03.01.2022 Tricia wrote: My husband just found 70 pieces of mail at the Maylands Yacht Club in the bin. All from Kirkham Hill, Deeley, Conroy Sts. All unopened mail now re...turned into letter boxes. We will also drop in the opened mail some of which would have had credit cards, licences. I will also contact Crimestoppers and police. There were also childrens clothes in the bin which did not look old. Also opened what looked like letters or postcards from overseas. We lost $200 worth Coles vouchers over Christmas from letter box theft and who knows what else before we bought a new letterbox and locked it. Everyone in Maylands seems to know this is a problem.... what we do we do! See more
