24.01.2022 This wonderful plant is Kangkong or water spinach. It's growing like crazy in this wicking bed as it has all the water it needs. It's a tropical plant so it's not going to like winter in the hills but it gives meal after meal all summer long. Kangkong is high in vitamins A & C and Magnesium and Iron too.

20.01.2022 Did you know butterflys are the 2nd biggest pollinators after bees? That's good to know if you live somewhere where bees are in decline. Look how much they love chives! They also really love buddleia which you can plant around your garden to attract them.

18.01.2022 Autumn is the best time to plant natives, after the third good rain. Planting natives around your garden will bring in the birds who will do much of your pest control and pollinating. Even after 30mm of rain soil can be dry only 2cm down. This is often nonwetting soil that needs clay and soil life added (although there are many additives on the market). It can easily be corrected by making craters that you plant into. This way rain pools where it's needed and soaks in over time. This gives everything you plant the best chance to establish its root system before the long hot summer arrives.

14.01.2022 You can tell so much about people by the way they handle plants. Like the way some people gently give a couple of twists to a lemon and if it is not freely given by the tree they leave it there compared to people who will snatch it from the tree tearing with it the green new growth of the branch. Some people soak pot plants so they slip out of the pot rather than bash the pots and yank at the plant to force it out as if it were unaffected by rough treatment. There are those ...who lift weeds from the ground and make them an offering to the compost heap compared to those who tear weeds from the ground and toss them aside as if the life energy that flowed through the little green organism didn't matter. Many of the plants in my garden are heirloom varieties that have fed and medicated humans for thousands of years. Some were even found in preserved neanderthal corpses. These little green beings have served humanity from our begining. Why then treat them like a commodity and not like the precious life giving gift from nature that they are? Do your plants fear you as you walk into the garden? Or do they celebrate your return like the dog does glad to have you near and blooming to be noticed? Be kind to the plants. See more

09.01.2022 This magenta colour on the back of the leaves of this milk thistle (very nutritious wild food) is not a disease or nutrient deficiency, it's a very clever survival tool. Plants use every hue of the light spectrum except green (which is why they look green). When the light levels are too low for adequate photosynthesis some clever plants produce the opposite colour to green underneath their leaves to reflect light that traveled through the leaf back into the leaf to be turned into carbohydrates. No wonder they'll grow anywhere!

02.01.2022 Aphids are a pain to any gardener as they suck the sap around tender growing tips and buds. The temptation to spray them is hard to resist even with garlic and chilli spray--which is effective--however anything designed to kill or repell them also kills or repells ladybirds who feast on aphids in their breeding season. Beware of upsetting natures cycles when you control aphids.
