25.01.2022 Rumor has it ... QUEENSLANDS FIRST EVER UNDERWATER HOTEL WILL BE BUILT IN THE SOUTHERN GREAT BARRIER REEF, WITH PLANS FOR IT TO OPEN IN TIME FOR EASTER NEXT YEAR. The Queensland government revealed yesterday that it will provide $1 million in funding for an upcoming eco-tourism opportunity in Lady Musgrave Island, which will reportedly allow guests to sleep up to three-metres below the oceans surface in a floating, underwater hotel.... Set in the lagoon surrounding Lady Musgrave Island, the sustainable hotel part of a 36 metre, three-level multi-purpose pontoon operated by Lady Musgrave Experience will reportedly be fixed to the sea bed and offer accommodation for up to 24 people. The vessel, which will run on solar power and be made partly from recycled materials. This pontoon is a game-changer for Lady Musgrave and the Great Barrier Reef and will create a whole new way for visitors to experience the island and the region, Queensland Tourism Industry development minister Kate Jones said. The Queensland government expects the multi-level pontoon to draw an extra 16,000 visitors to the worlds largest coral reef every year, driving more than $1.8 million in visitor expenditure. The vessel will reportedly run entirely on solar power and will partly be made from recycled materials. It will also be fitted with UV lighting for experiencing the Great Barrier Reef at night, while the upper decks will offer opportunities for diving, snorkelling and environmental data collection. Lady Musgrave Experience managing director Brett Lakey said the project would increase the world-class offerings and capabilities for Lady Musgrave Experience driving benefits throughout the Southern Great Barrier Reef region. This development will ensure the southern area of the Great Barrier Reef is an attractive gateway for visitors, providing some of the best tourism experiences on the Reef, Lakey said. The initiative is expected to support up to six jobs during construction and 14 jobs once operational.

24.01.2022 A BRAWL WHICH BROKE OUT ON A P&O CRUISE SHIP OVER THE WEEKEND, LEADING TO TWO ARRESTS AND MULTIPLE INJURIES, WAS NOT CAUSED BY A CLOWN, ACCORDING TO P&O. Furniture and plates were reportedly used as weapons when a fight broke out at around 2am on Friday morning on the Britannia cruise ship as it made its way from Bergen in Norway to Southampton. Richard Gaisford, of ITVs Good Morning Britain, was onboard the cruise and said on Twitter that one witness who was involved in the... trouble told staff that things kicked off when another passenger appeared dressed as a clown. This upset one of their party because theyd specifically booked a cruise with no fancy dress. It led to a violent confrontation, he said. However, P&O have since said no clown was on board, according to Sky News. This was also confirmed by Hampshire Police, who are investigating the incident. Police met the ship upon arrival in Southampton and arrested a 43-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman from Chigwell, Essex on suspicion of assault. They have since been released but remain part of the investigation. Gaisford also tweeted that the events of Friday morning were isolated, and the rest of the people on board were perfectly civilised. Britannia left Bergen at 1430 on Thursday, the violence occurred 12 hours later after a black-tie evening. It followed an afternoon of patriotic partying on deck, with large amounts of alcohol being consumed by many guests.

24.01.2022 KONICHIWA BRO! The WORLD JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT CLOSER, ACCORDING TO ENGLISH-LANGUAGE NEWS SERVICE RUSSIA TODAY. In a bulletin over the weekend, the news service, which airs pro-Russian news but in English, was attempting to show missile bases in the southern hemisphere.... Somehow it managed to mix-up Australias two closest neighbours, mistaking New Zealand for Japan and Papua New Guinea for South Korea. Presenter Ashlee Banks said: The US is looking to place missiles in Japan, South Korea and Australia, as the map behind showed a very distorted view of global geography. Still, to the shows credit, it did manage to get Australia right. A spokesperson for the channel later explained: Our American early morning news team suffered a little geography mishap. We have corrected ours as soon as it was spotted, and have given our team a new map of the southern hemisphere to ensure it doesnt happen again. And, yes, social medias reaction was equally swift and hilarious. I heard that areas pretty dangerous. Especially because of the crocodiles, joked one social media user. So, Im Japanese? penned one Kiwi. To which someone replied: Konichawa bro. And Japans chances in the RWC have just skyrocketed, too, wrote another.

24.01.2022 Croatia is lovely most time of the year but April is the start of the peak season for Europe. Prices for accommodation especially along the coastlines will be exorbitant. Dubrovnik is a good start. You may be aware Dubrovnik's fortified old town got further notoriety from the TV series Game of Thrones. After exploring the surrounds of what Dubrovnik has to offer, you could enjoy 3 days on board a leisure sail boat along the coast up to Split from Dubrovnik. But in between t...he two popular cities is Bosnia & Herzegovina! If you have more time, you could venture to Sarajevo. Sarajevo is a quaint little town with may tales including an event that sparked a world war! After the hospitality of Sarajevo, catch a bus to Mostar to witness the bravado displayed on the bridge. For centuries young men have jumped and dived off the 24-metre bridge to impress the local girls. But recently its done for money and the entertainment of tourists. After the slight detour, you meander back to Split - the Nice of the Adriatic sea. You may want to head back in land to visit the Plitvice Lakes in a National Park to marvel at the spectacular waterfalls on the way to Zagreb to enjoy shopping and admire the Austro-Hungarian Architecture.

22.01.2022 FLYING HIGH: IS IT SUSTAINABLE?! INTREPID CO-FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN DARRELL WADE BELIEVES THE AVIATION SECTOR HAS A MAJOR PROBLEM ON ITS HANDS IN TERMS OF CARVING OUT A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. Speaking at Travel DAZE 2019 last week in Sydney, Wade warned the outlook for sustainability in aviation was pretty bleak despite the industry wanting to think and promote otherwise.... Flying gets about one per cent more efficient per year. However, aviation is growing at about four-and-a-half per cent a year, so the impact of aviation is getting worse and worse every year. Thats just the reality of it, he told attendees. There is no bright spot in the future. We talk about biofuels and things like that. I was recently reading an article in the Financial Times saying how even if biofuels get to an economic price and a scale of production that we can use, you would need the entire surface area of Australia dedicated to the production of biofuels to cater just for the aviation industry. Its just not going to happen. Were kidding ourselves. Wade also spoke about the rise of flight shaming, which he believes wont be going away anytime soon. Theres some data that came out on aviation last month from and within Europe, and aviation was down four per cent, he explained. Flying in Europe has never been down ever, so I think people are actually starting to feel genuine guilt and remorse about hopping on a plane, and I think a lot of us in this room do too. As time goes on, I think weve got to start to flip it on its head and say a county is a country, so why in England, for arguments sake, dont we operate a product for domestic markets, so we have a lower-carbon offering. Living Adventure: Travel Australia should better promote the vast expanse - beyond capital cities, invest in quality accommodation & improve on good hospitality training to encourage Ozies / Overseas visitors to explore the great scattered wonders in the outback. WE can start with weekend getaways to national parks outside the major cities.

18.01.2022 VENICE SPLITS INTO TWO Venetians will be taking to the polls in December to decide whether the city should be split in two. President of the Veneto Region Luca Zaia announced last Wednesday that the plan to take the issue to referendum was legitimate and could go ahead in two months time, according to Il Globo.... Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice has said he does not support the vote and urged residents not to take part in yet another referendum on separation. The split would see the lagoon area of Venice and the mainland area of Mestre become two autonomous municipalities. Only residents of the lagoon area (around 260,000 people) will be allowed to vote on the matter, excluding citizens of the larger metropolitan area (around 853,000 thousand) according to Lonely Planet. While old Venice experiences an overwhelming 20 million tourists per year, the other six burroughs on the mainland are largely post-industrial, over populated and receive very little attention and investment compared to the popular floating section, the Local Italian reported. If the split goes ahead, it is hoped that both areas would have better control over where their finances go. This will be the fifth time Venice has voted in a referendum of this kind, with the previous four receiving a majority of no votes.

18.01.2022 CALAMITY JUNE! JUNE is not good news. A JET2 FLIGHT WAS ESCORTED BACK TO LONDON BY TWO RAF TYPHOON FIGHTER JETS AFTER A MIX-UP BETWEEN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS AND THE PILOTS.... The flight was on its way to Dalaman in Turkey from Stansted Airport when a 25-year-old female passenger became disruptive. According to a Tweet from another passenger onboard, the woman appeared to be intoxicated and had to be restrained. So I get on a plane to turkey after being in the air for 45 mins some drunk lady (may be on drugs too) attacks the cabin crew and then tried to open the airplane door!! 6 people are holding her down, shes screaming biting people and now shes in a seat being held down, Amiy Varol Tweeted. However, when the pilot told air traffic control the flight was turning back, they overheard him reporting the cockpit door had not been compromised, which air traffic controllers interpreted to mean someone had tried to access the cockpit the BBC reported. It was not clear at the time whether the woman tried to open the cabin door or the cockpit door, but nevertheless, this was enough for air traffic controllers to alert the military. Jet2 told the Evening Standard the two typhoon fighters caused a sonic boom in their haste to escort the plane which could be heard for miles. The aircraft has returned safely and we are liaising with the relevant authorities to support their investigation, a spokesperson for the airline said. We are working hard to ensure the remaining customers reach their destination as soon possible. The airline later clarified the woman had not tried to enter the cockpit. An Essex Police spokeswoman told the Evening Standard the woman had been arrested at Stansted Airport on suspicion of common assault, criminal damage and endangering an aircraft but has since been released on bail.

15.01.2022 AN AIR CANADA FLIGHT TRAVELLING FROM VANCOUVER TO SYDNEY HAS BEEN FORCED TO DIVERT TO HONOLULU AFTER HITTING A BIG BOUT OF TURBULENCE, LEAVING DOZENS INJURED. Flight AC33 departed Vancouver on 11 July carrying 269 passengers and 15 crew before encountering un-forecasted and sudden turbulence approximately two hours past Hawaii, according to a statement by Air Canada. The Boeing 777-200 aircraft subsequently diverted to Honolulu, where it landed normally at 12:45 pm EDT.... Current information indicates there were 37 people who appear to have sustained minor injuries, the statement read, with multiple media outlets reporting that a number of passengers hit their heads on the roof of the plane. Our first priority is always the safety of our flights, passengers and crew, and as a precaution, medical personnel were on standby to assist passengers in Honolulu. All people have since been assessed, treated and released by local hospitals. We have made arrangements including hotel accommodations and meals for passengers in Honolulu. Story by Huntley Mitchell

13.01.2022 First alarm bell: the terms and conditions section of the agency's website was just a place holder of Latin text. A MELBOURNE BASED TRAVEL AGENCY HAS SPARKED FURY AMONG HOLIDAYMAKERS AFTER CLAIMING TO HAVE GONE INTO ADMINISTRATION, WITH ITS OWNERS SEEMINGLY ABANDONING THE BUSINESS AND LEAVING CLIENTS IN THE DARK. And for some, out of pocket to the tune of $30,000.... Earlier this month, clients noticed a sign posted on One World Travels shop window: One World Travel entered voluntary administration as of 3rd of June 19. Which isnt out of the ordinary, however, Smart Company has reported the business is still registered for trading with corporate regulator ASIC and no administrators have come forward. The companys ATAS accreditation was cancelled due to voluntary withdrawal back in February, its website has been taken down, listed contact numbers have been disconnected and the company directors whereabouts are unknown. It appears the business has been abandoned, with creditor enquiries stacking up and clients left in the lurch. Ilya Furman, a solicitor representing 50 of the agencys clients told Smart Company that one couple could be left out of pocket by $30,000. It ranges from airline tickets to full on packages, one couple had booked an Alaskan cruise for $30,000, he said. AT THE MOMENT WERE HOPING EITHER ASIC OR ANOTHER STATUTORY AUTHORITY TAKES ACTION. He said the first alarm bell rang when a customer was told by a vacation provider that payment had never been made for a trip they booked through One World Travel. Smart Company also conducted a web archive search to find the agencys site and discovered its legal section, which is supposed to contain privacy information and terms and conditions, contained a placeholder of Latin text.

13.01.2022 BRIDGE DIFFERENCES IN VENICE: A Venice court has fined Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava for what the city deemed as errors that made a bridge over the Grand Canal unable to sustain the burden of tourists. Calatrava, who has designed countless projects around the world, including the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York, has been fined 78,000 ($127,903) over the alleged errors. Salvatore Vento, a Venice engineer responsible for the bridge, has abeen fined 11...,000 ($18,041). The Valencia-based architect has been accused of being negligent in the construction process for the Constitutional Bridge on Venices Grand Canal by making it more expensive and unable to handle the number of tourists who cross it each day, according to CNN. The 300-foot-long Ponte della Costituzione was unveiled in 2008 to great fanfare and represented the first bridge to be built in Venice in 125 years. However, the BBC reported that the bridge encountered problems after opening. Among the issues, the court found that steps wore out too quickly and fixes were needed for wheelchairs. However, Calatrava refutes he or his studio had anything to do with the construction of a platform for wheelchair users, which was allegedly undertaken by the Venice municipality, according to the BBC. He also denied any material weaknesses, with the BBC quoting the architect as saying: The bridge was checked with sophisticated methods, which determined that it has a solid structure which is behaving better than expected. Furthermore, Calatrava is arguing that the extra costs were linked to improvements to the canal-side areas next to the bridge.

12.01.2022 WAIT THERE IS MORE... SOUTH AUSTRALIAS LATEST ATTEMPT TO ATTRACT VISITORS TO THE STATE APPEARS TO HAVE MISSED THE MARK, WITH ITS NEW CAMPAIGN LABELLED THE SADDEST TOURISM AD EVER. The South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) ad, titled Dont feel sorry for old mate, stars an elderly chap called Dave who appears morose and depressed visiting the states tourist attractions, including a vineyard, local beach and Adelaide Oval.... It finishes with the line: Dont feel sorry for old mate. Its his own damn fault he didnt visit Adelaide sooner. https://youtu.be/5jyndIVod4k Whats more, old mate even has his own blog page and Instagram account. And, yes, social media was quick to condemn the ad, with some wags claiming it was so depressing it should have included a link to a suicide hotline at the end of it. Heres a selection of the criticism: If it truly is an advertising campaign, then its a terrible mistake. Dont like it at all. Its not funny or quirky, [it] just mocks an old man who is lonely. Who is going to feel in any way encouraged to visit Adelaide after seeing this? I am appalled and surprised money was wasted on such dreadful sentiments. It so depressing it needs the Lifeline number at the end. Terrible ad. Sad and depressing. Wheres the excitement and discovery to visit Adelaide? Its offensive to our state and older people. Trust me when I say: the latest tourism campaign for Adelaide of the grimmest things youll see in a while. However, SATCs executive director of marketing, Brent Hill, argued that the spot was deliberately controversial and aimed to get people talking. Youd be crazy if you made an ad like this and didnt expect to get some response, Hill told ABC Radio Adelaide. Thats obviously what it was designed to do we definitely wanted to put something out there that was getting a message across. We knew it wasnt going to be of everyones cup of tea. We want to punch home that message that too many people were saying well get to Adelaide one day.

10.01.2022 THINGS WE DO FOR INSTAGRAM LIKES! INSTAGRAMMERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO TREAD CAREFULLY WHEN VISITING A TURQUOISE SIBERIAN LAKE DUBBED THE NOVOSIBIRSK MALDIVES. The lake makes for a great backdrop, but tourists visiting the area have been warned against swimming there; as it turns out, the lake is a highly toxic artificial pond used to dump ash from a nearby coal plant.... In the last week, our ash dump of the Novosibirsk TEZ-5 has become the star of social networks, the company said in a statement on Russian network VK. But you CANNOT swim in the ash dump. Its water has high alkaline environment. This is due to the fact that calcium salts and other metal oxides are dissolved in it. Skin contact with such water may cause an allergic reaction! The owners of the Siberian Generating Company have said that although the pond may not be poisonous or radioactive, it is filled with chemicals that can cause allergic skin reactions. The company said that another danger is getting stuck in the deep mud of the ash dump, which is so thick that getting out is almost impossible. THEREFORE, WE ASK YOU VERY MUCH THAT IN YOUR QUEST FOR A SELFIE YOU DONT FALL DOWN INTO THE ASH DUMP! THIS IS THE BIGGEST RISK, the company wrote. The Siberian Generating Company has said that the water owes its unnatural colour to the depth of the ash dump and to calcium salts and oxides of various metals dissolving in the water. The water is also highly alkaline, with a pH of more than eight. Instagram account @maldives_nsk collects photos from other Instagrammers taken at the pond. Leo Axley, the person who set up the account, told CNN that he just enjoys photography and that the place is really interesting although you cannot swim there because of the high content of calcium and metal oxides which may cause allergies. He also added that he had been to the pond five times and that he planned to return. I go there every weekend but I dont touch the water"

09.01.2022 THE OUTBOUND AVIATION MARKET IN AUSTRALIA HAS BEGUN TO SLOW DOWN, AND MAY EVEN BE TRENDING DOWNWARDS, ACCORDING TO THE EMERITUS CHAIRMAN FOR THE CAPA CENTRE FOR AVIATION, PETER HARBISON. Harbison kicked off CAPAs 2019 Australia Pacific Aviation Summit with a health check of the aviation industry in Australia, delivering a somewhat grim outlook. Fares and routes will stagnate. Domestic will remain profitable particularly Qantas, he predicted. ... GROWTH WILL BE AWAY FROM ACTUALLY FLYING AEROPLANES AND TOWARDS SELLING STUFF, NOT JUST FLYING METAL. Qantas and Virgin Australias current focus on refining and revamping their respective loyalty programs is an example of airlines focusing on selling stuff rather than just seats, Harbison said. Qantas frequent flyer program alone accounts for around 20 per cent of the airlines profits, with 30 per cent of Australian credit card holders choosing a Qantas frequent flyer credit card program. Harbison went on to say the key factors feeding into the industry stagnation are the low Aussie dollar and fluctuating oil prices. Australia will become an inbound destination, rather than outbound which we have been for about 12 years, he said. Speaking later in the morning, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce confirmed Harbisons comment and said that in the almost 11 years he has been at the helm of our national carrier, this year is the first time he has seen the outbound market take a downward turn. FLIGHT SHAMING IS NOT THE ANSWER, SAYS QANTAS CEO The flight shaming movement, which began in Sweden with the hashtag #flygskam, spurred thousands of people across Europe to pledged on social media they would not fly unnecessarily or would go a year without flying. French and Dutch politicians have also joined the bandwagon, with France announcing last month it would put an ecotax on airlines starting in 2020, and the Netherlands has floated the idea of imposing a 7 (AUD$11.50) flight tax on passengers in 2021. The outbound aviation industry in Australia is beginning to stagnate, as CAPAs emeritus chairman Peter Harbison said yesterday, however, this appears to be caused by the declining Aussie dollar and oil prices, rather than for sustainability reasons. According to figures published in The Conversation, the airline industry uses 5 million barrels of oil every day, which contributes around 2.5 per cent of total carbon emissions, which could rise to 22 per cent by 2050. Its important to do these things [introduce sustainability measures] and to do them for the right reasons, Joyce said.

03.01.2022 DEDICATION TO YOUR VACATION! THERE ARE NOT MANY THINGS WORSE THAN ARRIVING AT THE AIRPORT, READY FOR A MUCH NEEDED HOLIDAY, ONLY TO BE MET WITH A LENGTHY DELAY. One man was seemingly so off-put by the prospect of facing an airline delay that he offered to pilot the plane himself.... Off-duty pilot Michale Bradley was preparing to go on holiday with his wife and young child when the family were informed they would be facing a two-hour delay due to a missing pilot. Michelle Potts, a passenger on the flight, posted a video to Facebook showing Bradley telling passengers what had happened. Bradley told the passengers, who were travelling with EasyJet from Manchester, UK to Alicante, Spain, that he brought his pilots ID to the airport after his wife told him about the delay. I phoned up EasyJet and said, Hi, Im standing in the terminal doing nothing. I have got my licence with me, he said. I have got my ID with me and Id very much like to go on holiday and if you need a favour, Im standing here ready to go. They said: Well phone you back. 38 seconds later they phoned me back and said: Please, please pretty please with a big cherry on top, can you fly the aeroplane to Alicante? So if youre all right for one of your pilots to look like this today, well go to Alicante. Bradley, who works for the airline, was met with wild applause from his fellow passengers. An easyjet spokesperson told Business Insider Bradley flying the plane was fully in line with regulations as he had his flying licence and pilots ID with him. We are grateful to one of our pilots who was travelling on holiday from Manchester to Alicante on September 2 with his family and volunteered to operate the flight, the spokesperson said This meant customers could get to their destination and shows the commitment and dedication of our crew.

03.01.2022 FOLLOW UP: FLYING HIGH? A WOMAN HAS BEEN FINED 85,000 (AU$150,939) FOR ALLEGEDLY CAUSING A FLIGHT TO DIVERT BECAUSE OF EXTREMELY DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR. The 25-year-old woman was on board a Jet2 flight from London Stansted Airport to Dalaman in Turkey on 22 June when she allegedly attacked cabin crew and tried to open the aeroplane door, prompting air traffic controllers to alert the military.... The flight received an escort back to Stanstead by two typhoon fighters due to a miscommunication between the pilots and air traffic control that lead air traffic controllers to believe the cockpit door had been compromised. The aircraft has returned safely and we are liaising with the relevant authorities to support their investigation, a spokesperson for the airline said at the time. The woman was arrested on suspicion of common assault, criminal damage and endangering an aircraft. According to the BBC, Jet2 has billed her for 85,000 and given a lifetime ban. Jet2s chief executive, Steve Heapy commented that her behaviour had been one of the most serious cases the airline had experienced. She must now face up to the consequences of her actions, and we will vigorously pursue to recover the costs that we incurred as a result of this divert, as we do with all disruptive passengers, he said.
