25.01.2022 It’s been a busy week. Some lovely Elaegnus Tubestock from Mudgee Nursery potted up for a client. Then local mature Olive Trees moved to @yeateswines glorious new cellar door. Can’t wait to see it progress ... . . . . . . . #mudgeeregion #wintergardening #cellardoor #buylocal #mudgeenursery #dreamteam @ca_arch @livjdesign #penneyconstructionsmudgee See more

25.01.2022 Pruning perks. This is part of a lovely old wisteria that has pulled its pergola apart. A very severe prune to allow the rebuild of the pergola was in order. We enjoyed the flowers for over a week.

24.01.2022 We are gradually replacing our fruit trees with dwarf varieties. I cant believe I am planting trees with no rain in the foreseeable future, an empty dam and a dodgy bore but there you go ... For those who are interested this is how we work with the #mudgeeregion clay and rock filled soil. We dig the holes with an auger but rock the Auger as we dig so the holes arent smooth on the sides. Then add about two fifths, total volume of hole, of Living Earth Supplies compost and... one fifth Gypsum. Mix soil, gypsum and compost together. Try not to go deeper than about 300/400 mm with the mixture. We dont want the compost to break down anaerobically. Redig hole, plant tree, ensuring soil at same height on tree as previouslyplanted, backfill hole. Then, most importantly, water in until soil has settled all the way around the plant. If you see a dam as in first photo fill soil again until level before adding irrigation and mulching heavily. That believe it or not is the abbreviated instructions. Dm me if you would like a copy of our tree planting diagram #eternaloptimist #gardenersareoptimists #pleaserain #mudgeeregion #sustainablegardening #dwarfruittrees #homegrownisbest #apricot #cherry #plum #almond #pear #livingearthsuppliescompost #compost #gypsum #trialanderror #prunebeforeyouplant #dontleaveadam #mulch #irrigation #techline @ Mudgee, New South Wales See more

24.01.2022 A long time between posts. I have been very busy in the garden this summer growing lots of food. This however was a little bit of beauty I couldnt go past. The Naked Lady was living here before we moved. I had to dig her (and all her friends) up when we renovated in 2014. I carefully replanted (with the bulb neck exposed) and apart from the occasional flower they have sulked ever since. They do hate to be disturbed. At last it appears they have settled in their new spots as this year they are popping up everywhere. In the background some of my precious Lunaria which always reminds me of Mum #oldbeauties #belladonna #driedhonesty #noeffortgardening #ungratefulbulbs #bowfield #sulkingover #sustainablegardening #cottagegardening

22.01.2022 Winterhome, Kekerengu in Marlborough. A beautiful garden 40 years in the making principally by the late Sue and Richard McFarlane but now cared for by their son Winston and his family. 18.01.2022 Flaxmere, Canterbury high country. Penny Zino has gardened here for over 50 years. Beautiful plantings native and ornamental with strong axis and views to the farm and mountains. 15.01.2022 These beautiful Cloche were made by the very clever @rainieross. As an experiment I used one to cover one of my first broccoli seedlings. 13.01.2022 Ohinetahi, South Island, restored by Sir Miles Warren and Pauline and John Trengrove and the garden developed from 1977. Remarkable, as is all New Zealand thus far, because it so green and lush but also because this is gorgeous space to wander through. So much going on with a variety of completely different spaces and crammed with exciting artwork set in a stunning bay and none of it over the top. 13.01.2022 It has been hard to get inspired about the garden with no prospect of rain but I am finally getting around to my winter cut back, in spring. Hope it grows a bit before our visitors in October . If nothing else it is a good drought strategy to reduce the canopies. This garden is already top dressed with Living Earth Supplies Compost so will mulch with Lucerne hay ASAP. We still have hay left over from bulk buys back when wet hay was a thing. . . . .... . . . #drought #betterlatethannever #gardendroughtstrategies #mudgeeregion #notasbadasothers #ornamentalgarden #springcleanthegarden #mulch #compost @ Mudgee, New South Wales See more

11.01.2022 The frosts are here and we have harvested the pumpkins. I sowed several different spots around the garden wherever I had a spare dripper. The only one to survive was Ironbark. It got about six liters of water once a week and produced twenty pumpkins. 09.01.2022 It has been an exciting week at Bowfield. We split a friends hive but unfortunately no queen cells so a new queen has been introduced. 08.01.2022 Trotts Garden, Ashburton. Developed by Alan Trott with his wife Catherine. 07.01.2022 Another first time grown vegetable. This was an old seedling I found in a large hardware store. Bit dodgy looking but I thought I would give it a go. No idea what I was doing but we harvested six kgs. Next time I: wont mulch as much, will pile soil on stems as the grow, will protect from roos as soon as I plant, will continue to eat the leaves as they are delicious . #. . .... . #mudgeeregion #iso #foodinthetimeofcovid19 #homegrown #sustainablegardening #worththeverylittleeffort #alicelovesthem #rooslovethem #bowfield See more

06.01.2022 Last night’s dinner on our new veg garden sink. Ready for a prewash before coming inside. Parsnips have always been a fave veg of mine but nothing it seems compares to homegrown. Even raw they are delicious Raffa the rooster is a gentle giant with us but a fierce defender of his girls. We now have some Japanese quail but no eggs yet :( The greenhouse is already full with Tubestock I am growing on for clients and lots of seedlings.
