21.01.2022 Heraeans - the unknown women's Olympic Games Republished from the magazine "Anichnefseis", October 1998 By Hariklia Mini "The Olympiades were the beginning of t...he women's games! It was held in honor of Hera, whose first temple had already been built in 1,100 BC. " These words of the German author Zigrit Ammer (Leontidou E. & S.R. Ammer, Women's Greece, Alternative Editions) are a challenge to the traditional male-dominated conception of ancient Greek sport. What was really happening? Pausanias explicitly says that every fourth year in Olympia, road races were held between virgins (unmarried girls) in honor of the goddess Hera. These are the famous Heraeans, the women's Olympic Games, which today are almost completely unknown, overshadowed by the men's. It is said that they were established by Queen Hippodameia out of gratitude to the goddess for her marriage to Pelops. In historical times, the organization of the Heraeans was also in the hands of women. Sixteen old women from Elida from the most prominent families were in charge. The length of the road that the athletes of Olympia walked, was 5/6 of the stadium. They competed wearing a short tunic, which left the right shoulder and chest bare, an outfit reminiscent of Amazonian depictions. Pausanias informs us that the athletes were divided into three categories according to their age. Ancient games were directly related to religion and the Heraeans included many ritual and worship elements. The sixteen women had the priestly duty to weave the new veil of the goddess every four years. Also, the prizes won by the winners were of religious significance: a wreath from the sacred wild olive tree - a tree symbolizing fertility, the Moon and the Earth - and part of the cow that was sacrificed to the goddess. Researcher J.E. Harrison and University Professor F.M. Conford speculate (The Origins of the Olympic Games, published by Iamblichos) that indeed the women's games are the oldest based on their date. The Men's Olympic Games were held alternately in August or September (Apollonius and Virgo - Parthénio according to the solar calendar), ie sometimes before and sometimes after the Heraeans. The month of Virgo probably took its name from the virgin games of the Heraeans - Virgo, one of the three forms of the Great Goddess, was also the title of Hera, who renewed her virginity every year by bathing in a sacred spring. Researcher J.E. Harrison The question: why are these women's sports competitions almost unknown even in their own homeland, while the respective men's sports have become known around the world? Why does the male-dominated science of historiography often overlook the female contribution to culture? If so, then the increasing participation of women in historical research holds many surprises for the future! ______________________________________ - , 1998 ! , 1.100 .. ( . & S.R. Ammer, , ) . 11.01.2022 I admit to never putting together the connection of the typical image of ‘witch’, and the horrors women, wise, creative, midwives, healers, all good women, went... through at the hands of fearful, tortuous men. May we continue to be haunted by the injustice and ignorance of their actions. Each year they parade her about, The traditional Halloween witch. Misshapen green face, stringy scraps of hair, A toothless mouth beneath her disfigured nose. Gnarled knobby fingers twisted into a claw protracting form. A bent and twisted torso that lurches about on wobbly legs. Most think this is abject image to be the creation of a prejudiced mind or merely a Halloween caricature, I disagree, I believe this to be how witches were really seen. Consider that most witches were women, were abducted in the night and smuggled into dungeons or prisons under secrecy of darkness and presented by the light of day as a confessed witch. Few, if any saw a frightened normal looking woman being dragged into a secret room filled with instruments of torture, to be questioned until she confessed to anything that was suggested to her, and to give names or say whatever would stop the questions. Crowds saw the aberration denounced to the world as a self-proclaimed witch. As the witch was paraded through the town, in route to be burned, hanged, drowned, stoned, or disposed of in various, horrible ways, all created to free and save her soul from her depraved body. The jeering crowds viewed the result of hours of torture. The face, bruised and broken by countless blows, bore a hue of sickly green. The once warm and loving smile gone, replaced by a grimace of broken teeth, and torn gums that leer beneath a battered disfigured nose. The disheveled hair conceals bleeding gaps of torn scalp from whence cruel hands had torn away the lovely tresses. Broken, twisted hands clutched the wagon for support. Fractured fingers locked like cropping claws to steady her broken body. All semblance of humanity gone. This was truly a demon, a bride of Satan, a witch. I revere this Halloween Witch and hold her sacred. I honor her courage and listen to her warnings of the dark side of humanity. Each year I shed tears of respect. Author unknown

06.01.2022 Made another teapot gnome home this weekend. Love those little damaged teapots that are just looking for another purpose. The door is out of popsicle sticks ...stained with walnut danish oil. Then I added some copper hinges and door knob. And the smoke out the chimney is copper wire as well. Added a little gazebo to attract possible renters. Thanks for looking. It was fun.
