24.01.2022 BLUEBERRY BANANA BREAD As promised in my previous post about the cognitive benefits of blueberries, here is a delicious and healthy snack to make. It is perfect in the school lunch boxes or even better with a cuppa when the kids are at school! ... Ingredients: 120 g almond meal 30 g coconut flour 1 tsp baking powder Pinch salt 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/3 cup ground flax seed 1/4 cup chia seeds 2 bananas mashed 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 eggs whisked 1/4 cup maple syrup 150 g fresh or frozen blueberries Method: Preheat oven to 175C. Combine the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. In a separate mixing bowl, mash the bananas with a fork until a creamy consistency forms. Add in the oil, eggs and maple syrup and mix well. Pour the dry ingredients in with the wet ingredients and mix well. Gently fold in your fresh or frozen blueberries with a spatula. Distribute the blueberries evenly throughout the batter, but be careful not to over mix as this will break the berries and cause your bread to turn purple. (It will still taste just as good but may not look as pretty!) Line a loaf pan with parchment paper and pour in the batter. Bake in oven for 45 - 50 minutes. Test if it is cooked through by sticking a toothpick in the middle. If it comes out clean, the bread is done. When fully cooked, lift the parchment paper out of the pan and let cool before slicing. Enjoy! Mark

19.01.2022 Yet more research about how important Vitamin D is. Vitamin D affects how smart your baby will be! We'd have the following conversation with almost every patient,... "Do you know what your Vitamin D levels are right now?" If your answer is no, or I'm not sure, or they were ok last year, then you need to recheck them. It's such a crucial thing to know, especially if you're planning on becoming, (or are currently), pregnant. We've been in lockdown and Winter has just finished. That means you may well be deficient. When you're pregnant, you churn through far more nutrients than you normally would, including Vitamin D. That's because your baby needs them to grow up strong and healthy. If you're deficient, research suggests this could effect the health of your baby, including their IQ. Get your Vitamin D levels checked, and supplement if you need to. If you're GP hasn't done so, then you need to ask them to. If you need some professional nutritional advice with this, please contact our clinic. https://medicalxpress.com//2020-11-vitamin-d-pregnancy-lin

18.01.2022 Gotta huge shock when I saw this headline in "The Conversation". "Gut Microbiome linked to Dementia, Parkinsons and MS". I even saw them mention "Gut Dysbiosis"!... And talk about the potential benefits of PROBIOTICS in treating these neurological conditions!!! Wonderful how the media are ever so slowly catching up with naturopathic and nutritional medicine. The day will come when your GP will mention these once "loony" concepts to you as actual health facts. Hopefully sooner rather than later https://theconversation.com/your-gut-microbiome-may-be-link

17.01.2022 This article in the highly respected, "The Scientist", gives an excellent insight into how, why and which probiotics are beneficial for babies. It's details how the gut microbiomes of babies have changed over the decades. These changes are linked to the increases in allergies and autoimmune diseases, amongst other conditions.... Certain strains of probiotics have great science behind them, showing that they have many positive and long-term changes in babies gut microbiomes. Even when given to breastfed babies. Bottom line is, the right probiotics can be hugely effective and beneficial for babies. What's important is getting the specific strains with the quality research. And that's where nutritional medicine practitioners fit in, as we are generally well trained in this area, compared to other practitioners. https://www.the-scientist.com//the-infant-gut-microbiome-a

17.01.2022 More research is being regularly published confirming what we in naturopathic and nutritional medicine have been saying for years - dementia begins in the gut. This latest research on amlyoid plaque formation, (a critical cause of Alzheimers Disease), prompted this comment by the researchers. "Our results are indisputable: certain bacterial products of the intestinal microbiota are correlated with the quantity of amyloid plaques in the brain,... The bacteria in your gut directly effect the health of your brain Therefore, if you've got dementia running in your family history, then you need to focus more on your gut health than the average person. Hippocrates said a long time ago that all disease begins in the gut. He may well have been extremely right. https://neurosciencenews-com.cdn.ampproject.org//micr/amp/

15.01.2022 Our new baby boy has been a blessing, and a lot of hard work! He was born via caesarean. Because of this, we've been very conscious of looking after his gut health. ... Babies born via caesarean have very different gut microbiomes compared to those vaginally born. This can lead to increased risks of diseases and conditions, including allergies. Researchers are now looking at changing the gut microbiomes of caesarean born kids using faecal microbial transplants, (a bit of an icky thought!) Luckily for us in the nutritional and naturopathic field, we have access to great quality probiotics for both infants and breastfeeding mothers. Combined with controlling infant colic, having a targeted nutrient dense maternal diet with appropriate supplementation, you can improve the gut microbiomes of caesarean born kids to reduce the risk of conditions developing later. If you would like to learn how to do this effectively, please contact our clinic for an appointment with one of our practitioners and we'll talk you through the steps.

14.01.2022 Dietary polyphenols are widely underrated and, in my opinion, one of the most potent and important plant chemicals. Polyphenols are a class of chemical compounds found in plant foods. They are known for their potent antioxidant properties that protect and improve our cellular health, improve cellular signalling, reduce inflammation and protect us against cancers.... Some of the more well-known polyphenol containing foods are red wine (resveratrol) and extra virgin olive oil. This study demonstrates the cognitive benefits from eating blueberries. More excitingly, the study showed by eating 1 cup of blueberries, improvements in cognition were shown within hours of consumption. Areas where cognition improved were word recall, word recognition and memory tasks. Not only did participants who consumed the blueberries do better with these tasks, they also showed less mental fatigue by the end of the day. Interestingly, the polyphenols in the blueberries also reduced glucose and insulin levels after meals. This only scratches the surface of the health benefits that polyphenol rich foods can exert in therapeutic doses. If yourself or your children struggle with mental fatigue and concentration problems, I suggest making blueberries part of your breakfast routine, whether that be on your favourite yoghurt, smoothie or simply as a snack in the lunchbox. The best way to include polyphenol rich foods is to include a large variety of coloured fruit and vegetables. In the next few days, I will share some quick and easy recipes that include these important nutrients. Food as medicine at its simple best! 14.01.2022 We published a whole bunch of scientific research for you earlier in the year, when COVID 19 first reared its head, demonstrating its effectiveness in treating and preventing respiratory tract infections. We've also showed you countless other clinical trials and research looking at Vitamin D and COVID 19. The lower a patient's Vitamin D levels, the greater the risk of death from COVID 19.... Now, with Europe in the midst of its brutal second wave, finally the UK is taking a good look at Vitamin D. We educate our patients daily about the importance of Vitamin D for their immune systems, hormones, insulin control and mental health. Hopefully the UK government ends up supporting Vitamin D as earnestly as we do. https://www.theguardian.com//covid-uk-government-requests-

08.01.2022 How can someone so small control your life so much?

07.01.2022 This paper reinforces that prevention is the best cure. The consumption of fish (especially fish high in Omega 3 fats such as salmon and sardines) during pregnancy and consumed within the child’s first year, has shown to reduce the risk of Atopic diseases such as Eczema and asthma. Both of which is becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society. ... Eating fish at least once per week or supplementing with cod liver oil was associated with a 28-34 % reduction in the odds of asthma, eczema or wheeze in children. The key takeaway here is to set your child up while in utero and continue with these important nutrients in their first year of life. As per my previous posts, an allergen such as fish must be introduced to your baby at the appropriate age. I understand that getting a child to consume fish may be difficult, that is why we recommend quality cod liver supplements to provide these nutrients in a more convenient form. Easy ways to include fish for children are sardines mashed with avocado, salmon flaked into chopped veggies and made into patties or mixed with pureed pumpkin to mask the stronger flavour. By simply including these important nutrients in your child’s diet you are giving them the best chance to avoid these health problems later in life. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31438628/
