25.01.2022 In our Living Smart sustainability course session on Water this week, we explored awareness of ‘hidden’ or ‘virtual’ water. Everything we use, eat and wear has ...a water footprint. Beef has long been given a bad rap for being a water intensive food. But as with all reductionist science funded by specific agendas... it’s about how you present the stats! When you add a water input analysis & distinguish between the different water sources, it has been found that 97% of the water allocated to grass-finished beef production is actually natural rainfall! Rain that would have fallen on that paddock whether or not an animal was grazing the grass. A food that is produced almost entirely with natural rainfall, isn’t really a water hog compared to foods that require large amounts of irrigated water from groundwater aquifers (e.g. ubiquitous foods such as rice or sugarcane). 15.01.2022 Thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers, the Wash Against Trailer group has been operating in Margaret River and surrounds for over 4 years. It has been a driving force for reducing plastic waste at our markets and other events and working to educate the community and visitors to the area about the damage plastic does to the environment and oceans. It was originally set up to save paper coffee cups going to landfill because they contain a portion of plastic and wax that req...uires a high temperature composting facility to dispose/compost them. Now all vendors at MR markets are required to provide compostable coffee cups and plates/bowls and this waste all goes into the FOGO green bins for transport to Bunbury to the new composting (high temperature) facility which copes with the plastic/wax they contain. As a consequence we Wash Against Wasters are no longer needed to wash china mugs and melamine plates/bowls. So the Trailer is available for new owners. If you are a not for profit organisation or volunteer group interested in taking over the Trailer and its contents please contact Tracy to make your expression of interest by email at [email protected]. The Trailer is fully equipped with marquee, folding tables, coffee mugs, plates and bowls, cutlery, urn, wash bowls, trays, teatowels, aprons and signage. If you think this setup could be useful on a continuing basis in our/your Shire or town where there are no composting requirements, then this could be the gear for your volunteer group. Please also share this information widely through your databases and social media pages so the trailer reaches the right new home. Congratulations team WAW for all your hard work over the years, washing all those thousands of cups, plates & cutlery amid much love & laughter! Your blood needs bottling xxx
