25.01.2022 Low Traffic Neighbourhoods have so many benefits, including delivering on a lot of ACT's stated goals, including health, climate, inclusiveness and business. Imagine how they would contribute to making Canberra a better place for all! Here's a glimpse and how they are best developed. #streetsforpeople #transport #activetravel #inclusion #urbandesign #urbanliving
25.01.2022 Will any of the parties in this year's ACT election be advocating for initiatives in the Designing Streets for Kids guide released last week? 24.01.2022 This is a step up on Bunda St. How much easier would it be to walk more safely from vehicles and COVID-19 if Canberra had 20km/h streets with priority for people walking? You know, streets with lots of people walking, streets with paths less than 2m wide, streets with no paths... #keepCBRsafe #VisionZero #roadsafety #walking
24.01.2022 What infrastructure we have makes a big difference to how easy and safe it is to walk. Upgrading our infrastructure to make it easier and safer for walking creates a lot of jobs and makes getting around safer for everyone - including people in cars. Come along to the Sustainable Transport election forum on Tuesday to find out what our political parties have to say about this and other transport matters. Details are in the Event section of this page. #Canberra #transport #ac...tivetransport #walking #infrastructure #jobs #VisionZero #roadsafety Conservation Council ACT Region
23.01.2022 How will candidates in the ACT election improve our transport to keep our kids safe? Join us in the forum at 5:30-7:00 TODAY - details in the Events tab above. #Canberra #actelection2020 #children #health #transport
23.01.2022 The law is clear: people walking on shared paths must be given priority and people riding bikes must sound their bells before passing people walking on a shared path. Unfortunately, with our current culture, people walking can't rely on people using wheels to do the right thing. What do you think is needed to change this problem? #walking #canberra #transport #law

21.01.2022 Another Letter to the Editor re paths. This letter yesterday proposed a solution: separate walking and cycling! Walking advocacy organisations around the world agree. We have been calling for separation of transport modes according to speed - or shared spaces that help everyone and everything to move at speed safe for people of all ages walking.
21.01.2022 European cities and regions are increasingly slowing down motor traffic - for a variety reasons. Interestingly, this article doesn't mention how much more safe and pleasant this will be for people walking and cycling. (Nor does it mention how much money it will save the people who are driving.) It's time Canberra and other cities joined in, in a holistic manner rather than in a few small discrete places. Shane Rattenbury MLA... 20.01.2022 If all our traffic lights automatically changed for people walking then there would be no risk of transmitting COVID19 and the inconvenience and discrimination against people walking would be reduced. Other cities around the world made this change universal and 24-hr early in the pandemic - why not Canberra? #keepCBRsafe #COVID19 #health #Canberra #discrimination #StreetsForPeople

19.01.2022 Every year, approximately 1200 people are killed and another 44,000 are seriously injured on Australian roads. Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24. These numbers are growing every year but are preventable if we choose to Drive So Others Survive! #RoadSafetyWeek #roadsafety #streetsforpeople... #DriveSoOthersSurvive #drivesos #DriveSafely #noneedforspeed #KillTheSpeed #VulnerableRoadUsers #stepup See more
17.01.2022 Here's a great way to get entertained and healthier these school holidays. Domestic Violence Crisis Service ACT helps people build lives free from domestic violence and fear. 16.01.2022 We’ve had the election forum on transport. Here’s the election forum that relates to another aspect of our mission. See you there!

15.01.2022 Infrastructure can make a big difference to safety on roads. For the most vulnerable road users (people on foot, especially children, people with disabilities and older people) lack of suitable infrastructure that prioritises them can mean the difference between life and death. 'Pedestrian refuges' do not prioritise people crossing the road. They simply provide a safer place to wait when you cannot cross the road in one move. First, though, you have to be able to cross the f...irst part of the road. This can be difficult when there are a lot of cars. Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24. This is preventable. Imagine you are an adolescent who needs to cross the road to catch your bus and you're running late for class, or to catch your bus home and the bus is approaching or at the bus stop. There's a huge temptation to cross the road before it is safe to do so. Now imagine how different this scene outside Narrabundah College would be if, instead of a pedestrian refuge there was a raised pedestrian crossing. 13.01.2022 Moving about in public spaces works more smoothly when everyone thinks about what other people need and is courteous and friendly toward each other. When COVID-19 struck there was a lot more kindness and thoughtfulness towards others. 12.01.2022 It's road safety week. A key factor determining how safe our streets for everyone, especially people moving around without a car or truck, is the speed with which vehicles travel. Speed limits make a big difference yet street design is even more important for encouraging the (easy) speed for driving. Everyone has a right to be able to move around our city safely. The graphic below shows the survival rate for a robust adult being hit by a car at common speeds - it's much low...er for other people such as children, older people and people with disability. Now what speed do you think is appropriate for most of our streets? 08.01.2022 Yesterday was Walk Safely to School Day. If our city was geared to people rather than vehicles then it would be pretty safe for people of any age to walk safely to school - without the need for a special day focussing on the behaviour of children and young people. Come along to the Sustainable Transport Election Forum on Tuesday evening to find out what our election candidates are proposing to make Canberra more walkable and sustainable. 03.01.2022 What ideas do candidates standing for the ACT election have to ensure Canberra has a transport system that is sustainable and does not damage our climate? Transport contributes approximately 60% of the ACT's direct damage to our climate, and a large chunk of those are from private car use. Walking contributes no pollution or damage to our climate - and every journey involves at least some walking. Walking also adds to our health, wellbeing and community. When more people ar...e out walking our community is stronger and safer, our economy benefits, our environment benefits and everyone using motorised transport benefits from having fewer people on the road. . 03.01.2022 Volunteers from Griffith-Narrabundah Community Association planted trees today in Blaxland Park. 02.01.2022 ‘The Catalan capital plans a major super-sizing of its influential idea: Over the next decade, Barcelona will convert its entire central grid into a greener, pedestrian-friendly area almost totally cleared of cars.’ The article provides more detail, including how this will make the city cooler in summer, quieter and cleaner, more resilient in floods and have a lot more recreational space. It also outlines some key challenges and the plans for handling them. Of course, Canber...ra isn’t Barcelona. We have much lower population density and most of our streets are not in grids. However, many of the ideas in this proposal would also benefit Canberra and make it much more liveable - especially for children and people in apartments. > Which parts of this plan would you like to see in Canberra?
