24.01.2022 Awww look at my baby camera (the front one) Have been thinking about it and wonder where did I retire it to. Over the weekend, I pull it out of my Cabinet of Requirement - where all my retired gears go. Nikon D40x was my first DSLR and the one I start learning photography with. A great little beginners camera. I love my 50mm on it and produce impressive portraits for a small fella. I started shooting weddings with this camera too. Its so light and tiny in my hand now th...at Im used to full-frame heavier cameras. One day the shutter button doesnt click anymore, so I decided it is time to put it to rest. 22.01.2022 SELFLESS SENIORS 2020 When I rang Charles Linsley to organise a photo shoot session, he was happy to do so. I said he was nominated by his peers for his volunteer work so we want to feature that in the photo. He said, which one?. He is involved in the environment, animal welfare, homelessness (including youth shelters), Volunteer Marine Rescue and more. So I asked him which one is his favourite. How do you ask a man decide which once is his favourite because this man ga...ve most of his adult life supporting a number of causes he feels strongly for. Charles loves the sea and everything to do with boats. It is expensive to own and maintain one himself so he figures he drives someone elses instead. So its decided, we shoot at the Mackay Harbour, and as a bonus, we get the beautiful water for background. Charles is a busy man. He has accreditation as a Mental Health First Aid trainer. He is a member of a variety of mental health networks and regularly contributes to expos, seminars and community awareness events such as displays and walks, and also provides individual support for family and friends. He is also involved with the Ulysses Adventure Riders Club. Charles has used his first aid knowledge to deliver specialised training for other riders who may be the first people on the scene of a bike accident. He coordinates the Mackay regions annual Black Dog Ride to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention. I wish I had more photos with Charles but he received an alert to rescue a stranded boat. It all began from The Neighbourhood Hub (TNH) programs: The Good Beginning Home-Based Family Support Program and Multicultural Programs, eg. World Cafe, Migrant settlement, and CALD Womens Club. Vivienne mentored migrants through their integration into our society by improving their English, and how to gain skills and qualification paving towards their choice of careers and goals. Vivien becomes the g...o-to person for newcomers to the community, particularly within her work with the Filipino Association. She is also active with Zonta International. In 2008 and 2019, the working relationship between TNH, Zonta and Glencore Australia, enabled the World Cafe program to secure funding for 2 Multicultural Cookbook, collection of recipes highlighting the multicultural diversity of this region. Vivien selflessness spans over various other fundraising activities including Qld Drought Fund, CQ Rescue, Mackay Hospital Foundation, and Australias Biggest Morning Tea. Yes, Vivien also works during her free time . Before all the volunteering work mentioned above, her first and foremost career is in hospitality with Ocean International for many years. Even though she now works casually with Ideal Placement, she still keeps 2-3 shifts a week at Ocean International. When I organised this photoshoot with Vivien, I asked her which of this role she wishes to feature in the photos. She chose Ocean International, simply because she is proud of what she has built here as one of their longest-serving employee. 20.01.2022 Colour or b/w ? It was a beautiful sunset setting just outside the pool area of Ocean International. However when when you put a model/subject in the line of direct sunlight, the distinct difference between stark light spot (like the spotlight on stage) create solid shadow everywhere else. But I love it! Another time and place, Id keep it as is BUT I want to see the waterfall in the background. Cant have both This is where back lit with flash would probably help but I don...t have them on hand and I decided earlier on itll be natural light for this shoot. This is where post work should solve my problem but it doesnt always work the way I envision. But slight touch of brightening the shadowy area did bring the waterfall back to life . However, in b/w, this photo made me feel like Im watching a romantic silence movie. 19.01.2022 My dad was a photojournalist for the earlier part of his career with a local newspaper before he was an editor. He is actually quite an artist; the medium of choice was pencil sketching and watercolour, but he didnt take his art any further than a hobby when he was young. I remember whenever we had school homework that requires illustrations, he was our go-to man. Apparently, my dad is quite a Romeo back in the day. He used to own an old vintage Vespa, and thats how he to...ok my mum out on dates. Ah, life was simple back then. Over a decade ago, when I was in an art course at TAFE, I was asked if theres anyone in my family who is artistic. I never even thought about it this way, but I just realised my baby sister and I do have a knack for photography. And my older sister isnt too bad with pastel painting either but not much interest in photography. So we did inherit a bit of that photography and arty genes from dad. So we do have dad to thank for being where we are now and mum who encourages us to pursue our love of photography. My dad had Parkinsons Disease and passed about 12 years ago. Along with dry eyes syndrome problem, I’m surprise I can still see. 13.01.2022 SELFLESS SENIORS 2020 Margaret looks exactly as I imagined she would be - genuinely friendly, happy, and bubbly as she sounds over the phone. Delightful to talk to and wise. As soon as she mentioned the piano at the Mackay Choral Society center, I knew straight away how I want to compose this sitting. She couldnt decide what to wear so brought a few outfits to show me. Im glad we picked this one because she looks distinctive, regal, and magnificent. Margaret Harvison... was discovered for her angelic voice when she was 8 years old, at the Eisteddfod talent show. Trained under the best vocal grandmasters in Mackay (sorry I couldnt remember the names as I was too busy snapping away) and dancing lessons, Margarets talent took her musical journey on many solo stage performance, earning her many performing accolades, serving as church choir coordinator and leader, and not surprisingly her active involvement with the Eisteddfod. She was a pioneer in the teaching of highland dancing and her vocal studio attracted a large enrolment of students. Margaret is also active in several community organisations : the Mackay Choral Society, musical comedy Players, and the NQ Choral Eisteddfod. This year, Margaret was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the General division for her services to the performing arts. I got The shot I envisioned, it was perfect. 10.01.2022 SELFLESS SENIORS 2020 #studio1romeo is proud to receive Joy for this photo shoot. We agreed prior to the session that she should bring her knitting and crochet projects to show me while we have a chat. She seemed comfortable in the studios stylish chair while she kept knitting as she told me her story. From what I noticed, Joy is a little camera shy but carry herself calmly and with grace. She is proud to share her story and the cause she supports through her love of kni...tting and crocheting. The arthritis in her hands didnt stop her from making beanies and blankets for babies for the AIDS orphans in South Africa (through a call-to-action article she saw in a magazine), blankets for the Mackay Womens Centre, and bra inserts/padding for breast cancer survivors. Joy is also doing her part for Days for Girls Mackay, a local group that gets together to make reusable sanitary pads for women in Vanuatu. Joy is also very skilled with a sewing machine so its no surprise shes getting request to make baby clothes, bibs, baby burp cloths, etc for her great grandchildren and their friends. She loves tending to her garden when she can. At 79, she is in fantastic shape and I cant see her stopping all these craft works anytime soon. 10.01.2022 SELFLESS SENIORS 2020 Unlike most of the other seniors featured in the Selfless Seniors Weeks exhibition, Neville Ross is not a retiree but gave 12 years of his free time to SES Mackay branch and enjoyed every minute of it. So much, so he recruited his son, well, they both love being part of the SES team. As an SES volunteer, you need to be ready to face different kinds of emergencies (flood, cyclone, fire, first aid, etc.); therefore they are well trained to respond to an... emergency. Thus Neville has obtained a lot of qualifications in different functions within the SES world. After years of involvement with SES, his experiences is invaluable to the organisation. One of the portfolios he holds within this organisation is training volunteers. Neville has also been on quite a few Deployments around Queensland and has always made a good impression on those working with him. Whenever he can, he helps his son at the local scout den. Teaching and nurturing the younger generation the skills they acquired from SES may help increase their future recruits. After the shoot I get a private tour of the SES facility. The rescue vehicles and boats shed are well stocked. I got the chills as I walked through the training/meeting and briefing rooms because I can see this is where the SES officers making final decisions and briefing the team before deployments. I introduced myself and explain our photoshoot process, explained Amandas role (who came along to do a short interview for Mackay Life weekend paper). She looked blankly at me but then nodded slowwwly indicating shes okayed it and understood. {ME INSIDE: Yikes! Im in trouble!...} {KATHLEENs FRIENDS would... say: Yup, youve been served} **From my experience, this reaction is not by any means intentional, just an auto reaction to the situation they are not comfortable with. It happens and totally normal.** Work mode ON : I joked and chat, ask questions, chat some more, respond and listen enthusiastically. I watched Kathleen relaxed and came out of her shell #airhifive #missionaccomplished #yay Kathleens Story : We met at Etwell Park, home to Bakers Creek AFL Club, and Kathleen is their strongest supporter. The club closed down in 2012. In 12 months, Kath managed to raised over $20,000, which enabled the club to open again. She was secretary of the club from 2013-2017 and the treasurer from 2018-2020. She actively organised the running of the canteen, cleaning the clubhouse, fundraising for the club and supports AFL within the community. 2019, AFLQ recognised her work as a volunteer in the AFL community in this region. 09.01.2022 The MECC -3D virtual tour sneak peak. The last couple of months working on this project has been a massive learning curve for me. It took a lot longer than anticipated because of its sheer size but adding hurdles, camera limitations and weather on top of workload and fatigue; it was challenging, to say the least. For example, on one session, I did 1.5 hours of shoot and then has to delete it all later. I tried so hard not to cry on the drive home. No time to feel sorry becaus...e the work must go on. 08.01.2022 SELFLESS SENIORS 2020 Ron and Laurelle Williams lived in the same house for over 50 years and watched the cane fields across the road turned into rows of houses over the years. Neighbours came and gone, and thats how they met Kate and her family, once a next-door neighbour. Kate nominated them for this seniors week project, so their kindness and generosity is recognised. Ron and Laurelle love gardening and grew strawberries and vegetables, which they enjoy treating the ne...ighbours kids with some healthy snacks. Even after the neighbour moved away, they still stay in touch. Ron and Laurelle love helping people, so they are always helping one charity or another. They helped man the cake stall fundraising for Cootharinga, collects leftover bread from the bakery and take them to the breakfast club at school. After retirement, Ron offered up his free time to mow the lawn for those who couldnt. They are also very active with church activities whenever they can. As we were looking around their house for the best spot for the photoshoot, I noticed a room downstairs has a table full of photographs on display. Ron is on a quest of assembling as many old photos as he can find, for their family reunion slide show/album supposedly to celebrate their 60th anniversary (thanks Isobel!) which is now a little tricky with COVID19. Im awed by the vintage images and family photos taken over the years. They showed me their well-preserved wedding photos captured by a professional photographer. Another photoshoot project Liz Andrews Photography has been commissioned to capture for Gary to add to his portfolio before going to its new home. I am so impressed with Gary’s craftmanship. I asked him what made him decided to crochet? I have always been a bit of a crafter and love making things since young. ... Each square takes about an hour, and there’s 120 squares plus edges. I can't see any similar colour square, so I assumed he used 120 different coloured yarn. If he follows the original pattern to a T, this would have been a monotone black grey and white colour lap blanket. However, Gary loves his colours (as do I ) so have decided on a more delightful finish. It's humbling to see this blanket in my studio. He has a big plan and this creation is just a small part of his creative home decor and furnishing dream. 03.01.2022 SELFLESS SENIORS 2020 Having arriving half-hour earlier, I scout around this little hidden secret garden for the best spot for photos. I couldnt believe where I was standing because it felt like paradise. How is it I not know this place exist? Leonie Wood explained the Slade Point Neighbourhood Hub came up with this idea and the Slade Point Bowls Club contributes the space. They hope the garden will bring the community together, nurturing the land, and give back to the pe...ople. It is open to everyone and hopes the public will appreciate and respect the garden. This garden holds market days, Planet Sharing Days, educational session for the local school. I also noticed several art pieces displayed in the garden, so I assume the public are also encouraged to express their creativity in this garden if they wish so. Leonie dedicated hours of her time seeing to this project. Leonie is currently working with Councils Environmental Education Office to host composting workshops. The Neighbourhood Hub is also responsible for the street light pole art, like the one Leonie is leaning on in the photo. Leonie painted that pole herself. 03.01.2022 I am posting this in memory of my beloved brother, who passed away last Monday morning (30th Nov) in our hometown of Kuching, Malaysia. He returned to the Lord after months of agony and pain. It was hard for everyone to accept that he is gone but a relief to see he is not suffering anymore. Isaac was only 42 yo and last few years has been rough for him. Work, finance and health stress took a toll on his well being. He was tough to live through that and came back from it. How...ever, this ailment that took his life was a shock, and especially I can't be there to say my goodbyes. I guess I was still hopeful that he would recover. My strongest memory of him goes back when we were kids. Born 2 years apart, we were close friends. We got into mischief and trouble together, and we have our daily mini suburban adventures. We love to climb trees and play pretend. He was always in trouble. I remember Isaac broke mum’s dressing mirror . He fell and broke his arm when he was 5 years old. We are also very proud of him for his academic achievement. After I moved away to Australia, I missed a big chunk of his life as an adult going through college and the start of his career. The one thing I will deeply regret is not to have taken more photos of my brother and with him. I don’t have a recent photo of him. The last time we catch up properly was over 8 years ago, and we didn’t take enough pictures of each other then. I wish we have the phone camera we have now. I haven't been back to visit my family for over three years, and even then, we didn’t take photos with each other. Therefore it felt like we didn’t capture enough memory of the later Isaac. #alessontoremember My brother, my friend, we will miss you dearly. Rest now. 01.01.2022 SELFLESS SENIORS 2020 CQ Rescue nominated all their senior volunteers, as a team and photographed as a group photo. Their combined effort generates over $60,000 for RACQ CQ Rescue. Therefore it is difficult to nominate only one senior volunteer for this project. From left to right: Jeff Ryle, Yvonne Cooper, Hilary Jones-Rowan, Pat Carroll, Paul Carroll, Roy Garland, Lorraine Benson, Chris Frazer, Ray Benson, Veronica Peoples & Cheryl Pearson (Absent: Annie Scott & Jill Ryl...e) RACQ CQ Rescue ran several fundraising events annually, including Emergency Services Day, Beach 2 Gardens Charity Fun Run, Gala Dinner, third party events such as the River 2 Reef Charity Bike Ride, Mackay Marina Run, Sarina Golfs Run Tee Off For Lift Off etc. These senior volunteers will be the first to put their hand up to help. Because of their passionate, unwavering support, RACQ CQ rescue can offer a lifeline, delivering aeromedical service across NQ region. I like to thank CQ Rescues management team and the pilots and crew for organising the time for them to assemble at the helicopter hangar for this photoshoot session. While waiting, the volunteers enjoyed a private tour and had their photos taken with the crew and helicopter. As you can see, they are so proud to be part of this project. The helicopter crew thought trainee Darrell would be an exciting addition in the photoshoot, but volunteer Cheryl has a different idea. Cheryl is pretending to give trainee Darrell CPR.
