25.01.2022 My pot plants struggle in this hot weather but an upside-down PET bottle of water keeps them going when I'm not home. The problem is, they're so ugly... so, instead of art journaling, I practise painting on them to upcycle 1.25 litre Coke bottles into cute plant waterers. Liquitex gloss gesso gives a great base to make any cheap acrylic paint or posca pen stick. Finish off with an outdoor spray varnish from Bunnings and they last for ages.
20.01.2022 I visited one of my happy places today. Campbelltown's Mission Australia shop is having a sale. I got these gems and two designer label dresses for $10.00. After a break from op shopping it was great to experience that sense of suspense and adventure as you walk through the door with no idea what you might find. Once I would have overlooked some of these friends asking to be found but now I look with different eyes, seeing potential and beauty in dust collecting junk. The jewellery box is a gift to replace my daughter's cardboard box of jewellery. The rest will become part of my fairy gardens. Keep an eye on this page to see their progress.
09.01.2022 Someone has a new face.
05.01.2022 It's been a while since I posted, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy with my Found Things. This is my latest creation. The bowl was one I bought at an op-shop without even opening the box. I expected it to be clear and intended it to be a fishbowl for a fighting fish. I was disappointed to open it and discover the smoky coloured bowl which wouldn't be great to show off a fish. It took almost a year of rumination before I came up with this really pretty fairy gard...en. The rocks in the bottom were salvaged from my daughter's goldfish tank when the fish died. The little pixie and other decorations were a Christmas gift from my mum who has delightedly resigned herself to supporting my love of tiny things. Even one of the plants was a bonus freebie. Finally, the fairy lights were bought for my daughter's New Year's Eve head-dress and repurposed here. In the end, all I bought was one plant. Everything else was leftovers from my craft and gardening box(es).
01.01.2022 Last year flew past so fast with little time to indulge my many hobbies. I feel like I'm on a creative binge, experimenting with leatherwork (harder than it looks), and miniature gardens. Though the photos aren't great, this is my latest creation and I'm really proud of how it turned out. It is made (almost) entirely with leftovers, other people's discards and found things. The glass vase???? came from my local Life Line. The gravel substrate was collected from the side... of a road and the pebbles were salvaged from my daughter's old goldfish tank. I know it's weird, but I happened to have some activated charcoal in my laundry cupboard (I think it came with some discards from my mum). I always wondered what one would do with activated charcoal, but then I watched a tutorial from terrarium guru, Tanner Serpa at Serpa Design and found its purpose. I DID buy some coir, but could probably have done this project with just plain potting mix that I already had. In the end, I mixed the two together. The rocks were collected from my backyard (the lawnmower man will thank me) and the moss was gathered from Tims Garden Centre Campbelltown NSW. If you've never been there, it's an awesome nursery with really knowledgable staff and plants that are usually much further along than most. Tim genuinely loves plants and has a wicked sense of humour (no-he's-not-paying-me-to-say-this). Legend has it, the signs outside his nursery were so funny, the council had to ask him to pare back the humour because they were causing too many accidents at one of Campbelltown's major intersections. Finally, the little unicorn was in amongst a batch of dolls donated by a friend. I found it really cathartic to create this project and it's (hopefully) almost unkillable. Hope you like it.
