22.01.2022 If you have a broody hen at the moment it is a perfect opportunity to add to your flock - simply place chicks under her and she will do all the work for you . Chicks need to be only a few days old and you simply place them under her front wings or chest and she will do the rest . Provide Chick Starter crumble and place any deep water dishes out of reach . We have a new hatch today of sexed female day old chicks perfect for a couple more days for broody hens or for you to rais...e too . These chicks are $25 each sexed females. Available are Australorps in splash and blue , Araucanas in lavender and black, Anconas, French Wheaten Marans and Wyandottes in splash gold and blue gold , no silvers atm . Our chicks are now too old for a broody however we will have another hatch soon . Chicks to hand raise are still available Cheers Liz See more
21.01.2022 If you have broody hens at the moment we will have day old sexed female chicks available again tomorrow. These are perfect for broody hens . We should have all our breeds available except silver and gold Wyandotte chicks as we are still filling back orders for these . If you don’t have a broody hen to raise your chicks then you will need a light for heat to keep them warm. A halogen globe is adequate. Cheers Liz
20.01.2022 We have a new hatch of day old sexed female chicks just hatched, suitable for broodys , if put under them ideally today or tomorrow. If you are going to hand raise them then picking them up is not so urgent. The breeding season is drawing to a close and the hatches are getting smaller so if you’d like hens laying in time for next spring it’s best to get them soon . If youd like some chicks please pm me via messenger or message me on 0403592329 . Cheers Liz
19.01.2022 We will have another small hatch of sexed female day old chicks ready to go tomorrow. We expect to have Australorps, Anconas , Araucanas , French Wheaten Marans and Wyandottes available in small numbers . These chicks will be perfect for a broody hen to raise or to hand raise for your layers for next spring. Please contact me on messenger for details. Cheers Liz
18.01.2022 We have a new hatch of day old chicks available now , perfect for putting under broody hens or easy to hand raise now in the warmer weather . Available are French Wheaten Marans, Anconas, Araucanas and Australorps. They are $25-$30 each for sexed females. Please message me if you are interested in any . Cheers Liz
14.01.2022 Just a reminder- have you wormed your chickens ! for those of you who worm their chooks the first week of the new season - it’s time. Chickens need to be wormed every 3 months to keep them in tip top condition and doing it the first week of each season makes it easy to remember when you last wormed them . Worming is very important as I’ve explained in previous posts and failure to do this often results in an unwell chook with a compromised immune system . This leaves them susceptible to picking up diseases some of which can’t be cured and may be contagious and fatal . So happy worming Cheers
13.01.2022 Like many of us, we have had a bad storm here which unfortunately caused a blackout for over 3 days now - so far . The bad news is we lost power to our incubator and despite desperately trying to save the two hatches it contained we were unable to save them . It was exhausting and disappointing and very very sad . Consequently we won’t have any baby chicks for at least 3 -4 weeks and as the hens go off the lay heading into Autumn and the moult it may be much longer , we just don’t know . We will collect eggs and get any laid into the incubator asap. So sadly no chicks for your broody hens or cute babies for the kiddies for a while . We do have pullets a bit older which I’ll check on for your orders after we get back on our feet. Thanks for your patience Cheers Liz
12.01.2022 The weather has warmed up so now is a great time to raise chicks . The time they will need a light for warmth is greatly reduced to just a few weeks now . We have some lovely healthy pure breed sexed female chicks 0-2 weeks old and 2-4 weeks old available at last . These are still chicks and will need a light for warmth for a week or two . Any halogen globe that gives off heat is adequate. Available are Australorps, Anconas, Araucanas, French Wheaten Marans and Wyandottes. There are no silver laced or gold laced Wyandottes available yet as we are still filling back orders . Cheers Liz
11.01.2022 Hi All and thank you all for your support it was genuinely much appreciated. Just a quick tip which I’ve posted about before however now seems like a good time for a reminder. If your chicken coop and enclosures are smelly after the wet weather add generous dusting of hydrated lime to everything except the chickens themselves including the floor, ground, perches, nesting boxes etc . This will neutralise the odours and keep things fresher and healthier. Add mulch, fresh bedding etc and it will be as good as new . Cheers Liz
09.01.2022 One of the most common question we get asked is which breed of chicken is the best . Without any hesitation I’ll always answer the Australorp of course , closely followed by the much underrated Ancona . Next comes the French Wheaten Maran then the Araucana and finally the Wyandotte. Of course it does depend what you want in a chicken and this varies from individual to individual however for me I want firstly a really healthy, hardly, easy to look after breed, next a reall...y great layer, then a lovely temperament - good with people and other chickens and finally I want a really interesting gorgeous looking chook . I also want my chickens to last, to be long lived and to lay for many years . For all of these reasons you can’t beat Heritage breeds and the five I’ve mentioned are in our opinion the best, ticking all the boxes . Of course there are lots of other great breeds however the laying ability, good looks and vigour of these five are hard to beat. So to make it easier I thought I’d profile each of our five favourite breeds over the next month or so starting with the star this season Ancona. See more
08.01.2022 We have lovely healthy pure breed sexed female baby Ancona chicks available now $25 each . Anconas are a favourite of ours and are a great breed and excellent layers of large white eggs. Please note these are baby chicks that need a light for heat and to be kept in a box etc for a few weeks. We are not supplying older ones at the moment. None of our others breeds are available yet however we are taking orders for chicks if you are happy to wait . We are not taking orders for silver laced Wyandottes at the moment until we fill back orders however I will post when they become available. Cheers Liz
07.01.2022 We have another small hatch of Araucanas, French Wheaten Marans, Anconas and Wyandottes- no Silver Wyandottes or Australorps this time . These are sexed female baby chicks perfect to put under the late broodys today or tomorrow at the latest, for them to raise over the cooler months ready for Spring. These chicks are also great to hand raise. If you are interested please contact me on messenger or text message. Cheers Liz
05.01.2022 I’ve had a number of questions about how to keep your chickens cool in the hot weather that’s expected on the weekend , so I thought I’d post a few strategies that have worked well for me over the years. Locate your coop in the shade in summer with good air circulation. Cover the roof if it’s tin and not in the shade with any insulation material at hand ie old doona , branches cut from the garden etc - tin roofs will get very hot and act as a radiator pushing very hot air i...nto the coop . I often string a tarpaulin above the metal chicken tractors to create shade . Hose down the roof of your coop and the area for the chickens , to cool it off . Freeze sandwich bag size bags of water and put these large blocks of ice in the water drinkers as needed to cool the water down . Cold watermelon is excellent to rehydrate chooks on a hot day . Place water drinkers in the shade as chickens don’t like to drink warm water . Provide plenty of cool fresh water . Do not leave a broody hen in a hot hen house !!!! remove her indoors or to a cool spot . To recap Shade Good air circulation Cool fresh water . Special attention to broody hens . Jumbo ice blocks of water Cold watermelon Hose the roof and area Create shade with branches, tarpaulins etc On extremely hot days I hose down to cool the coop and area and also refresh their water late morning and again 2-3 pm and this works well All the best Liz See more
02.01.2022 Well a lot has happened since I last posted and I hope you have all managed to stay safe and well . Breeding season is just about to kick in so now is a really good time to make sure your flock is in tip top condition . Hens have already started laying small Pullet eggs and will soon be laying large eggs . This will continue for several months and more , with short cycles including mini breaks , to rest their bodies . It’s a bit of a marathon so to prepare them now is timely.... We usually do a big thorough coop clean out with fresh lime added , as usual of course , and nesting boxes getting particularly attention . Some liquid vitamins in their water for a week and of course , making sure they are wormed and have no mites or lice . Some hens may still be moulting , as it’s been so warm , however they will recover their good looks soon . As usual cool clean fresh water every day in a clean drinker and a top quality complete feed- remember scratch mix is not adequate on its own . Don’t leave feed out overnight and you won’t be encouraging unwanted free loaders such as mice or rats - they are dirty and carry disease . We feed our flock only what they can eat by sunset each day so no vermin . Chickens need nice dry places to rest and roost . With your girls in top shape your egg bounty is on its way . Enjoy and all the best . Cheers Liz See more
