17.01.2022 With our local sugar cane harvesting season coming to an end, we thought we’d pass along some fun facts you may not know! The Sugar Mill was built in 1894 and has operated continuously since that time. The crushing season runs from June to Dec each year. With the cane taking 9 - 14 months to grow! So far the local Mossman Mill has cut 521,831 Tonne of cane. To compare a standard SUV car is 2.2 tonne. ... 9Mw of energy is produced each year, enough to power 800 homes. The Mossman Mill produces 24,000 tonnes of molasses for Aussie markets. Our FNQ region definitely buzzes during this time of year with the cane trains and the sweet sugar smell in the air! Now for mango season and "the wet" to begin...
