05.01.2022 NO RESTRICTIONS ON FISHING OR ESSENTIAL TRAVEL BY BOAT AMID COVID-19 CONCERNS UPDATE: Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey has clarified that yo...u can fish or travel in your boat if it’s essential. If you own a boat and want to head out in the water in your local community to fish for food this weekend, you can, Mr Bailey said. If you need your boat to travel locally in your community, you can still do that. If you want to head out on your kayak or stand up paddle board for exercise, you still can. State Government boat ramps will remain open to boaties. However the State Government is encouraging Queenslanders to stay at home. EARLIER: Thought you could escape the coronavirus by grabbing the boat and heading out to sea for the day? Think again. Maritime Safety Queensland has issued a new directive that recreational boating is no longer permitted, following the latest Federal Government restrictions around COVID-19. "As from Sunday, 29 March Federal Government direction is that public gatherings are restricted to no more than two persons and that people should stay home unless they are shopping for essentials, receiving medical care, exercising or travelling to work or education," QMR general manager Angus Mitchell wrote in a statement. "This applies to all activities that are not specifically exempted boating is NOT." According to Mr Mitchell, the only "permitted circumstance that might reasonably be considered to include recreational boating" is that of physical exercise using non-powered crafts, i.e paddle etc. He said boating compliance officers from Maritime Safety Queensland, QLD Boating and Fisheries and the Queensland Police Service would be conducting operations to enforce these regulations. IN SUMMARY * No recreational boating due to COVID-19. * Non-powered boating activities for "essential exercise" is okay, as long as no more than two people from the same house together and maintaining social distancing. * Compliance officers will be out checking boaties are complying to new regulations.
