The So...uth coast is set for a battering today, with swells up to 10 metres. There's some concerns from authorities that some might try to brave the conditions to surf or go fishing. 17.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BAN There is a TOTAL FIRE BAN in place for the CITY OF ALBANY for tomorrow, Friday 7 February. Please do not;... Maintain any fires in the open air Carry out any activity that could start a fire Light any open fires at all Undertake any hot work inclusive of metal work, grinding, welding, soldering or gas cutting. Drive vehicles within natural reserves to reduce the risk of fire. Fines of up to $25,000 or 12 months jail time, or both apply if you do not comply. As the fire danger will be SEVERE this means these are very hot, dry and windy conditions for a bush or grass fire. If a fire starts and takes hold it will be unpredictable and move very fast. Spot fires will start and move quickly. Embers may come from many directions. WHAT TO DO Read through your bushfire survival plan. If you do not have one decide what you will do if a fire starts. If you are not prepared to the highest level, leave bushfire risk areas early in the day. This is your safest option. Homes that are prepared to the highest level, have been constructed to bushfire protection levels and are actively defended may provide safety. You must be physically and mentally prepared to defend in these conditions, this means you have the right equipment and resources to protect your home such as an independent water supply, petrol/diesel portable pump and protective clothing. Stay alert and watch for signs of fire, especially smoke and flames. Keep up to date with bushfire information through local radio, websites and your local community. Keep updated at emergency.wa.gov.au

09.01.2022 I am delighted to learn that an engineering assessment of the condition of Western Australia's unused Tier 3 rail lines will be commissioned by the McGowan Gove...rnment. I am a long-term campaigner for the re-establishment of freight on rail in regional Western Australia and last month met with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union WA Branch (RBTUWA) state secretary Craig McKinley. The RBTUWA, along with stakeholders such as the Wheatbelt Railway Retention Alliance, has done a fantastic job in pushing the Government to match its words to action through the announcement of this assessment. As recently as last year I tabled a petition to WA Parliament in August 2019 with over 3,000 signatures calling for the reopening of Tier 3 rail lines. We know that rail is good for the regions and makes roads and travel safer for tourists and residents, it decreases the costs associated with road maintenance and brings work crews into regional towns. It is my hope that an engineering assessment will provide the government with ample justification to support the recovery of these lines from a negligent operator and begin the regeneration of regional rail infrastructure. 02.01.2022 2020 Autumn Calicivirus release Pet rabbit owners please be aware that the 2020 Calicivirus (RHDV-K5) will commence on or after Wednesday the 6th of April. Plea...se contact your vet to get your pet inoculated ASAP as it takes up to 2 weeks before your pet is protected. For additional information relating to the European Rabbit, its control and information about the virus and also how to protect your pet or domestic rabbits, visit https://www.pestsmart.org.au/pest-animal-s/european-rabbit/ Each year, the European rabbits causes an estimated $200 million worth of damage to the agriculture industry and they can be a serious pest in urban areas. Rabbits cause serious erosion problems, prevent native vegetation from regenerating, attack domestic gardens, compete for food and habitat with native animals and undermine buildings like homes and farm sheds. The 2019 spring release will assist in reducing the rabbit population around Albany, Denmark, Cranbrook, Gnowangerup and Wagin. This project is funded by the Commonwealth’s Agriculture Competitiveness White Paper Managing Established Pest Animal and Weeds Program, and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in partnership with South Coast NRM, the Gillamii Centre, North Stirling Pallinup Natural Resources and the Wagin Woodanilling Landcare and local land managers to assist in reducing the population size of rabbits.
