We are fortunate to have Kerrie, who has helped several members solve their military mysteries, in our Group.
25.01.2022 We recently received a large donation of books. We added those titles we did not have to our library and we are selling those which are duplicates. There are several titles relating to the local area and Hunter region. If anyone is interested please take a look at the list here: https://www.lmfhg.org.au/books.html

21.01.2022 For those wishing to research at Speers Point Library this message came through from Jess Dowdell at Council. "Just letting you know that the time limits in library branches have now been lifted meaning that there is no restriction to the amount of time people can use the family history computers at Speers Point. We will be setting up a bookable research computer that can be booked for 2 hours. Once this is set up I will let you know."

19.01.2022 All the media coverage of the bush fires got me thinking back. This is a photo that appeared in the Newcastle Herald in 1991 when my Grandmother, Win Rodgers, ...was evacuated by members of the Teralba Fire Brigade from her home in Rodgers Street Teralba when a bush fire set the roof of her house on fire. She was 97 at the time. Thanks to the brigade members the house was saved and Grandma moved back in and she lived there until her death in 1994 at the grand old age of 102. See more

16.01.2022 People are reading our blog. In its few months of existence we have now had over 2,000 visits.
14.01.2022 Hello all.....exciting news for our Museum. WE'RE MOVING!!!!! About 2 and a half years ago the Dept of Education became aware of our existence at WWHS (after 27... odd years) bringing awareness to some WHS issues that have now been addressed and signed off on. During this time school rules changed and our Wednesday visitors were no longer able to drive onto school grounds thus making it difficult for our older or disabled folk to visit. We were able to negotiate with WWHS to have a monthly Saturday opening. November 30 and December 1st 2019 we had a special re-opening weekend, then we had February 1st 2020 was our first Saturday opening and then we had March 1st and then the world was thrown into chaos with COVID19 and our Museum has been closed to the public since then. Around the same time as DET became aware of our existence Lake Macquarie City Council were planning on building a new Library/Museum. LMCC then spoke with us about including our collection (or part there of) to the new Museum. After a great deal of discussion we felt it could only benefit the collection by being in a controlled environment with skilled volunteers (us and others) and curators to oversee the collection, so we agreed to relocating. And so the mammoth task of numbering, itemising, measuring, digitising, photographing etc of all items has begun. We also have to do significance statements for many individual items and the 45 different types of collections we have. Since we agreed to the move LMCC has been great supporting us with training, necessary equipment and volunteers. Some training was funded by LMCC and we were able to participate during COVID19 via Zoom & webinars. We also applied for a grant that enabled us to learn how to do Significance Statements from an expert in this field. We've also been fortunate enough to have several new volunteers assisting us with data entry (school photos and names), significance statements as well as setting up the new inventory data base. I think our volunteers are the BEST btw Sorry for the long winded post but the time has come to share the good news with you all. I will include a link to the LMCC website so you can have a look at the plans for the new Museum. Take particular note that Jess from LMCC will be at the Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Centre tomorrow 24.11.2020 between 10am & 12 for community consultation. Thanks for reading this I will post link separately. See more

12.01.2022 Ken Cubbon added 22 new photos from December 4, 2018 to the album: Warners Bay Live Steam Locomotive Track (1956 - 1972). A brief history of Lake Macquarie Live... Steam Locomotive Society. In 1953 a group of people at Warners Bay decided to form a model engineer club. From humble beginnings the club has grown to be a nationally recognised society for model trains. Now at Valinda Street, Edgeworth. With the hard work and creativity it has led to the successful club of today, with a track the attracts visitors from all over Australia. See more

03.01.2022 Heather Garnsey, the recently retired Executive Officer of The Society of Australian Genealogists, will the guest speaker at our monthly meeting that will be held on 14th November (please note change of date). Heather's topic is The Sydney Benevolent Asylum and its triangle of care. In 19th century Sydney the Benevolent Asylum was a place of temporary refuge for destitute ex-convicts, deserted wives and abandoned children and by the 1870s it was the main lying-in hospital for single pregnant girls. From the 1850s it also forged close relations with the Randwick Institute for Destitute Children and Liverpool Asylum. The surviving records can tell us a great deal about the people it helped.
