24.01.2022 The end of Storm Season 2020-21 Storm season for the NSW SES typically runs from the 1st of October through to the 31st of March each year. During this time there is an increased risk of severe thunderstorms. The increase in storm frequency during this period is primarily due to the increase in energy provided by the sun during the warmer spring and summer months, coupled with spring and summer weather patterns that are favourable for storm growth.... During this last storm season, the NSW SES received 981 requests for assistance (RFA) across the Lake Macquarie Local Government Area (LGA). These RFA's were responded to by volunteers from the NSW SES Lake Macquarie Unit, NSW SES Cooranbong Unit and the NSW SES Swansea - Catherine Hill Bay Unit. With the most recent storm event the NSW SES was fortunate enough to have assistance from Fire and Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service. The image below shows an overview of the RFA's received by the three units that oversee the Lake Macquarie LGA. This shows the most frequent types of jobs we were called to, the types of hazards involved along with the the types of dwellings. As you can see there is quite a variety of jobs and hazards our volunteers handle. and while the carousel never stops turning, our volunteers are hard at work training and planning for the next storm season. We thank them for their tireless effort and commitment to the NSW SES and to their local communities, without them we would be lost. #NSWSES #ourlakemac #seshunter #lakemacquarie #volunteers #volunteersmakeadifference #stormseason #NSWFloods

20.01.2022 SCHOOLS OUT The #holidays are a joyful time of year and we want everyone to be safe. Remind the little ones and the big ones about the dangers around play...ing outside during flood and storms, and to steer clear of flash flooding, particularly around storm drains, fast-moving rivers and creeks. #Floodwater is filled with debris, bacteria and much more that could cause illness and injury. Roads and surfaces could wash away, and may not be seen from the surface. Know your risk http://bit.ly/2kNv2zC If you knew what was in it, you wouldn’t go in it! 11.01.2022 Last night volunteers of the NSW SES Lake Macquarie Unit came together to conduct an After Action Review (AAR) after the storm event that impacted the area over the last past weeks. The goal of an AAR is to discuss the tasks that were undertaken, the things that were done well and the things that could be improved upon. These AAR's play an important part in our functioning as an emergency service. They allow us to analyse what has happened, identify our strengths and weakness...es and gives our volunteers a chance to communicate in an open forum. The lesson's learned from last nights AAR will now be used to improve our response times, resource management and planning for future severe weather events. #NSWSES #seshunter #ourlakemac #lakemacquarie #stormseason #NSWFloods #volunteers #volunteersmakeadifference
