25.01.2022 Cooking Meals for your School Community during COVID 19. A big hello from us all here at the TSCA. We hope that you have had a wonderful Easter break and first... week of the holidays? We are making a call out for Expressions of Interest from Schools, their school Canteen Manager and Home Economics staff, who would like to provide meals for their vulnerable school children and families, during this difficult COVID 19 period. The TSCA would be able to support you with ingredients, containers, recipes and guidance regarding food safety and delivery at any Government and Non-Government school in the State. Are you interested? Would you like more information? Please contact the TSCA through the email address [email protected] See more

24.01.2022 Thank You to our friends at Pure Foods Eggs who support us all year round, but have increased their support during this difficult time. We picked up another pallet of eggs from the team in Launceston this week. These will be distributed in emergency food hampers across Tasmania.

24.01.2022 Disengaged youth are finding confidence, work and a renewed sense of purpose through a unique relationship between the SPACE Learning school, Loaves and Fishes and Devonport Chaplaincy. Students from five North-West high schools are referred to SPACE Learning at Devonport where they are taught in small groups and with one-on-one teacher support. SPACE stands for Staged, Predictable, Adaptable, Connected and Enabled. Devonport Chaplaincy provides individual mentors who assist ...students in class and beyond, and an on-site chaplain supports the students one day a week. The chaplaincy group has been with us from day one of the school, working with teachers and support workers to set up classrooms and workshops for the kids, said Wade Symmons, program leader at the Devonport campus. Three of our students did work experience at the Loaves and Fishes kitchen which led to school-based traineeships. A fourth is doing work experience at the Devonport warehouse which we hope will also lead to a traineeship. Loaves and Fishes also delivers food daily which the kids use in our kitchen to cook meals to take home We have seen some positive impact as a result of the influence of the chaplaincy group. 24.01.2022 Premium Fresh is one of the biggest weekly fresh food donors to Loaves and Fishes. Owners, from left, Jim, Mike and Rick Ertler are third generation farmers. Their grandfather Alexander was a successful farmer in Hungary before fleeing Australia during the Second World War. He was robbed en-route, and only made it to the Lucky Country after a stranger paid for the family’s fare. Alexander worked on a farm in Latrobe, established a cheese factory on Don Road in Devonport, held... a patent on potato growing, and even made TV dinners from his produce. He later established Alexander Ertler and Sons in 1950 at Forth, the forerunner to what is now Premium Fresh. What an amazing legacy to farming, family and fresh food. The company produces 30,000 tonnes of vegetables annually, supplying local markets and exporting to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Managing director Jim Ertler said while he may not have the time to invest in charity work as a volunteer, the company tried to be generous with the produce they grew. To our business it’s not a great cost because we are dealing in such large volumes, but what it achieves is pretty major, he said. People get dealt some pretty bad hands from time to time, and it’s nice to be able to help. Life’s too short to be self-centred. #premiumfresh #EndingWasteEndingHunger #emergencyfoodrelief #foodrelief #foodsecurity #tastyfood #eatfresh #loavesandfishes

23.01.2022 Loaves and Fishes and A Paw Up ensure family pets are not forgotten when their owners are struggling. A Paw Up founding director and animal lover Deb Conley (pictured) said in hard times, owners often go without food to feed their animals, to the detriment of both. People can’t afford pet food so they give their animals some of what little food they have, but unfortunately neither the owners or their animals are getting enough of the right kind of food which leads to sicknes...s, she said. A Paw Up collects premium dog and cat food from suppliers or from private donations at various collection points which is distributed through various agencies including Loaves and Fishes. We just wouldn’t have the State-wide reach without Loaves and Fishes, Deb said. Pet food is included in the made-to-order emergency family food hampers collected by agencies each week for families in need. Collection points for A paw Up donations are at Loaves and Fishes warehouse, 12 Mill Lane, Glenorchy; Loaves and Fishes Devonport, warehouse, 136-140 Don Road; Midway Point Neighbourhood House, Midway Point; Woolworths, Campbell Street, Hobart; Emma’s Dog Walking Service, 87 Wilmot Road, Huonville The Cat Cafè, Elizabeth Street, North Hobart; Office of Rebecca White MP, 33 Cole Street, Sorell; Office of Josh Willie MLC, 1/16 Albert Road, Moonah; Office of David O’Byrne, 18 Ross Avenue, Rosny Park. 21.01.2022 Thousands of Tasmanians doing it tough receive food each week because of the generosity of our food partners including our friends at Harvest Moon - Forth Farm Vegetables are used in ready-to-eat meals prepared in our Devonport kitchen for use in emergency hampers, in muffins and frittatas for our school breakfast packs, and distributed fresh each week to more than 200 community partners. Harvest Moon don't make a big fuss about it. In fact, they don't make any fuss - they ju...st fill up our truck each week and send us on our way so we can deliver food and hope. 20.01.2022 Over 4000kgs of meat products have been donated to Loaves and Fishes Tasmania by our mates at SecondBite and Yume Food Australia. This is just one of the 5 pallets of pork shoulder, pork mince and other meat products that will go into producing our ready to eat meals. Over 12000 meals were produced in our kitchen last week and were distributed free of charge, along with an additional 32000kgs of fruit, vegetables and staple items, to agencies around Tasmania. Our focus is not just about feeding people, but its about feeding people well. Thanks to all of our generous donors who allow us to provide quality food to those in need.

20.01.2022 Following advice from the Department of Health recommending that anyone involved in food production should wear masks, we put a call out to the wonderful North West Community and within a week, the team were all masked up. A massive Thank You to Lifeway Baptist Church Devonport for leading the response and rallying the community. One person sewed 12 masks in 24 hours and another had masks sent up from Launceston. Railton Pharmacy also generously contributed to the cause. This has allowed our team to continue to produce meals safely to support vulnerable Tasmanians. Last week 10758 serves of nutritious ready to eat meals were produced by our kitchen team and village of dedicated volunteers. #community #workingtogether #localheroes #TassieRocks

We receive such amazing support from our local growers and producers and we simply could not do what we do without them. #buylocal #tassiefarmers #localheroes #community

15.01.2022 We literally cant get by without a lot of help from our friends. Huge thanks to Jack, Bruce and team from Comrural who have helped us deliver food and hope to Tasmanians doing it tough through assistance with a mobile coolroom that has enabled us to store more of the 10,000 ready-to-eat meals we have been making each week since COVID #comrural #tas #feedtas #foodrescue

15.01.2022 Surely its not too much to ask that Tasmanians have on-demand access to the food they want and need? Food security is a justice and human rights issue. Every day were delivering food and hope to those who need it most through over 200 community partners best able to ensure we do the most good for the most people. #foodrescue #foodrelief #foodjustice #humanrights #endwaste #tasfood #foodwaste #loavesandfishes.

14.01.2022 Thanks to Jade for supporting Loaves and Fishes Tasmania. Lets all get behind his efforts to raise much needed funds for a great cause.

13.01.2022 Important message about Food Safety: Loaves and Fishes Tasmania operate by following strict safe food handling guidelines and ensuring that all food that is distributed is correctly handled and stored. During this crisis, we have increased those standards to ensure that extra protections are in place, including sanitising of crates, staff and volunteers health checks prior to the commencement of each shift and recommended additional hand-washing and sanitising processes throughout all of our facilities. We would also recommend that all raw produce provided is washed before use. This is generally a good rule even for produce purchased at supermarkets. Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions or concerns

12.01.2022 The Federal Government provided $16 million in funding to National Food Relief providers to address the demand created by the COVID 19 situation. Only 1 of those providers operates in Tasmania. Loaves and Fishes Tasmania currently provide over 60% of Tasmanias Emergency Food Relief and yet we are again being told we are ineligible to access this funding as we are a State Based provider. Whilst we have received incredible support from the Tasmanian Government, that funding on...ly goes so far. Since April 10th, LFT have provided 189,000kgs of fresh food and staple items, produced 70,739 ready to eat meal serves and distributed 2,123 food hampers. Tasmanians who are doing it tough, need to have ongoing access to this service. Its time for the Federal Government to stop making excuses around the vital funding needed for Tasmanian Emergency Food Relief. We need action now.

11.01.2022 Easter Greetings #stayhomesavelives To all our incredible farmers, producers, supermarkets, community food programs and staff, serving people across Tasmania, Thank you. Your commitment in so many ways is helping to support many Tasmanians through a very challenging and difficult period.... We thank and acknowledge the Tasmanian Government for their strong and courageous leadership during this Covid19 pandemic. We appeal for all Tasmanians to respectively honor their directive and help save lives. Despite the challenging circumstances we all face right now, may this Easter break be a time of stillness, refreshment, and reflection. Appreciate those close to us and may we all take time to reflect on the sacrifice, hope and new life that Easter represents. In support of your fellow Tasmanians, family, friends, your own health and wellbeing, Please Stay At Home this Easter. #stayhome #savelives Andrew Hillier CEO - Loaves and Fishes Tasmania

11.01.2022 Renee de Bruyn wants Loaves and Fishes customers to feel seen and loved. Just because its free doesnt mean it has to be tasteless, she said. We never want recipients of our food to think they are charity cases who will just get whatever.... Renee and the teams daily challenge is to produce tasty, nutritious ready-to-eat meals from mostly donated Tassie produce. Some weeks you could make anything you wanted, but during the middle of winter you have to get very creative when most of what you are getting is cabbage, onions, carrots, apples and potatoes, Renee said. The Devonport kitchen produced up to 11,000 meals a week in two shifts during the height of the COVID lockdown. Meals are sealed in plastic in servings of four and frozen for delivery to more than 220 partners state-wide. The kitchen functions with two cooks, two trainees, and an army of volunteers who work collaboratively to serve Tasmanians doing it tough. The mother of nine-month-old son, Obi, said her cooking partner at Loaves and Fishes, Pat OConnell, worked in an award-winning Indian restaurant and was great at getting the most flavour out of the available produce. We do cakes, muffins, crumbles, puddings, frittatas, pastas, curries, Chow Mein, sates, roasts and soups. The equipment weve got in here is amazing. Lots of commercial kitchens dont have gear as good as us," Renee said. Star of the cooking show is a Bratt pan, a monster commercial cooker capable of frying, boiling, pressure-cooking and searing large quantities of food. Pat describes it as an electric fry pan on steroids, Renee said. #EndingWasteEndingHunger #foodrescue #foodrelief #loavesandfishes #foodinsecurity #devonport #tasmanianproduce #eatlocalgrown #eatfresh #devonportchaplaincy

11.01.2022 Loaves and Fishes Tasmania can make two fresh, nutritious meals for $1 thanks to farmers, supermarkets, schools, a prison and food relief charity partners donating a whopping 22,000 kg of food each week conservatively worth about $60,000. Loaves and Fishes turns the fresh and ambient food into ready-to-eat meals, emergency family food hampers, schools breakfast supplies and crated fresh produce for distribution free to Tasmanians doing it tough through more than 220 community... partners. Loaves and Fishes wouldn’t exist without the generosity of our food suppliers and cash donors. We couldn’t afford to buy, even at heavily-discounted prices, the volume of produce we need to deliver food and hope to Tasmanians doing it tough, said general manager Aaron Kropf. There are hundreds of farms, supermarkets, manufacturers and individuals who donate food, from fruit and vegetables, to poultry, bread, meat, eggs, bread, seafood and dairy. Donated food can be seasonal, surplus, rejected, slightly damaged, or nearing its best-before date." The three largest commercial food suppliers are Premium Fresh Tasmania Harvest Moon - Forth Farm and Agronico Together, the North-West Tasmanian-based companies supply about five tonnes of fresh vegetables every week. 11.01.2022 Another brilliant initiative from our mates at Eat Well Tasmania

10.01.2022 These are the real heroes of Loaves and Fishes Tasmania. Here are just some of the hard working community members who give their time to support those in our community who are doing it tough. Working in our warehouses, kitchen, administration and kitchen garden, as well as doing hamper deliveries to the community, we simply could not provide the level of service that we do, without these extraordinary people. To all of our volunteers we say Thank You for all that you do. #NVW2020 #localheroes #community #tassierocks

09.01.2022 Loaves and Fishes partner, Heavens Kitchen (pictured in action), has concerns about the impact on the most vulnerable when JobKeeper and JobSeeker are withdrawn or significantly reduced, potentially leaving many more people unemployed or sinking below the poverty line. Heavens Kitchen Supervisor, Melissa Gregory, and Community Care Coordinator, Cheryl Jones (left), were reflecting this week on the impending threat as volunteers were preparing about 100 three-course takeaway... meals for Devonport residents doing it tough. Overall demand for food has increased about 20 per cent since COVID. The women say some families have already fallen through the cracks, earning too much to qualify for Jobseeker, but not enough to provide adequate food. These are what we refer to as the working poor or situational poverty, Cheryl said. The loss of JobKeeper will leave many more people unemployed, and they wont be able to survive on unemployment benefits when they are scaled back. Melissa said: There are people who already go without meals to pay the rent and electricity. They literally have nothing in the cupboard when we visit them in their homes. Others run out of money and food a few days before their pension or unemployment benefits are due. They survive on the bear minimum of food until they can access emergency food or support. About 80 per cent of our clients are on some form of pension and many have disabilities, are elderly, have mental health issues or struggle with substance abuse. We also have a lot of people who are lonely and disadvantaged. COVID-19 has already drastically changed the way Heavens Kitchen, a 15-year-old ministry of Gateway Community Care in Don Road, has delivered food, with care. Long gone are the weekly Thursday night dine-in dinners where guests could enjoy a leisurely meal and chat with friends, followed by some form of entertainment. Meals are now takeaway or home-delivered: pumpkin soup, jacket potatoes with chicken curry, and apple muffins. Loaves and Fishes supplies about 10 to 20 per cent of the fresh food converted into nutritious family meals. Loaves and Fishes also supplies frozen ready-to-eat meals and made-to-order family food hampers. Heavens Kitchen has added Zoom cooking and budgeting courses and fortnightly connect groups for men and women. Gateway Community Care hopes to resume the dine-in meals later in the year. 05.01.2022 Loaves and Fishes trainee cook Zac Russell makes the same kind of meals he used to receive from us when he was unemployed and living at Quoiba. I know how other people must feel when they receive our food hampers, Zac, 19, said while on a break from working in the Devonport kitchen. We were getting the hampers for a few months. At the time I was on Centrelink.... I had to pay rent and food. There were times when all I had was a loaf of bread to last me a week. The job agency told me about Loaves and Fishes, and we started getting the hampers. Zac is three months into his traineeship. He studies at Devonport TAFE where he is completing a Certificate Two in Kitchen Operations. He is one of two fulltime trainees employed in the kitchen. Loaves and Fishes also offers school-based traineeships and provides skills training for the long-term unemployed at the Hobart and Devonport warehouses. I still cant believe I get to work here, Zac said Its the best feeling ever to be in a team environment where people want you, where you can work in a team and have fun. 03.01.2022 Aussies households waste $4000 worth of food per year, or around 300kg per person. We waste one out of every five bags of groceries we buy. Buying only what we need, planning meals to reduce waste, storing leftovers, growing our own food, composing food scraps, buying locally grown and seasonal produce all help reduce waste and the associated costs of planting, growing, harvesting, sorting, storing, packing, transporting and dumping perfectly good food. Friday is World Food Day, a day to consider our food choices and their impacts. Coincidentally, this is Anti Poverty Week, a time to remember that many people don't have enough. #worldfoodprogram #worldfood #reducewaste #foodrelief #foodrescue Anti-Poverty Week #EndingWasteEndingHunger #loavesandfishes #eatlocal #tasfresh https://www.nambuccaguardian.com.au//nambucca-can-honour-/
