09.01.2022 One thing I have learnt in my short time as a cray fisherman is that you experience many highs and lows emotionally, physically and financially. This trip started off slow! You wake up in the early hours of the morning after very few hours sleep to prepare the boat to go pull the gear from inshore or off shore, wherever we shot it the night before. You pull up to the gear along the cliff faces or wide offshore, with the weather calm or the winds howling unsure of what is in... the pots. Expectations may be high but catch rates might be low! This puts more pressure on yourself, your family, the crew and his family. As commercial fisherman you put your life on the line! Day in and day out no matter if you’re catching fish or not. You risk it all for that chance of a money reward! This trip in particular we did really well! Boat full with fish! With emotions high we left our gear in the water heading to port to unload the catch! Sure enough 50 minutes into the steam to port the motor stops, leaving us dead in the water! Enough reception to send a text to my father with my latitude and longitude saying "motor dead off Mangana need a tow" In the mean time we attached a rope to our 91m of anchor chain! We then dropped anchor 2nm offshore and waited for the tow boat to arrive! Spending our time going over the motors manuals, trying to figure out what went wrong! Tow boat arrives to take us home. The mechanics arrived a day later for the result to be a $32 relay next to the motors ECU! So in just 4 days fishing we experienced enough highs and lows to last me a few months! But of course that wasn't enough! My gear was still sitting 7nm offshore of South Bruny! We unloaded the fish, stocked back up with food and away we went for another 4 days of highs and lows!
