23.01.2022 In Japan, "Shichi-Go-San" - - means "Seven - Five - Three" is a festival traditionally for girls of the age three and seven when for boys of the age three and five are celebrated as a rite of passage. 'Shichi-go-san' takes place on 15th of November; however, it is not a national holiday. Rather it is a custom when on this day or the closest weekend children are dressed in traditional kimonos or formal Western-style dress then taken to visit a Shinto shrine. While at the s...hrine, it is prayed for their continued good health and growth into adulthood. 'Shichi-Go-San' is said to have originated during the Heian Period with court nobles who would celebrate the passage of their children into middle childhood. The practice was set to occur on the fifteenth of the month during the Kamakura Period as 3 + 5 + 7 equates to 15. It has long been that odd numbers are considered lucky numbers. Over time, this tradition passed to the samurai class who added a number of rituals. These would include the costume traditions that would form the basis of those observed in contemporary times. Traditionally, children were required to have shaved heads until the age of three when they were allowed to grow out their hair. By the Meiji Period, the practice of 'Shichi-go-san' had become widespread among the general populace, giving rise to the familiar modern day ritual of visiting a shrine to drive out evil spirits and to wish for a long healthy life for the children. The custom of dress, for boys of aged five is to wear the "Hakama", a particular costume that he is permitted to don for the first time, while girls of age seven would wear a "Furisode", a long 'swinging' sleeved kimono with an "Obi", a wide elaborate sash. Three-year-old girls usually wear "Hifu", a type of padded vest with their kimono. Although for many young children, formal 'Western' style is often worn. Nowadays, 'Shichi-go-san' is typified by proud parents who are also dressed formally either in traditional costume or Western-style snapping away with their cameras of their beloved children in all their 'Grown-Up' refinery. It is truly a sight to behold and enjoy. There are rewards for the young in dressing up by way of sweets and other gifts. The most traditional of these are the long sweets called, "Chitose Ame" in bags that are decorated with turtles and cranes. 'Chitose Ame' (), literally means "Thousand Year Sweet", is long, thin, red and white wrapped in thin, edible rice paper. The candy, the crane, and the turtle, all symbolise good health and longevity. ! Good Health and Long Life to All Children!

15.01.2022 WARNING: Recently it has been brought to my attention of the increasing number of what are called "Switch & Bait" websites that are advertising on Facebook and other social media. Some people I am acquainted with have been scammed by these slick operators. One of the most known which has been shut down was Luxodora.com. Another one, a Vietnamese site, which has a growing list of complaints, MeweGallery.com. It regularly advertised on Facebook and had been raking in thousands...Continue reading
