25.01.2022 Veterinary specialist visits JCUVet James Cook Universitys veterinary emergency centre and hospital. JCUVet, has performed four hip replacements on dogs with t...he help of a Melbourne veterinary specialist. Dr Chris Preston, principle veterinarian and registered specialist in small animal surgery at the Pet Emergency & Specialist Centre, made the trip from Melbourne to Townsville to lead the procedure last month. Dr Preston is a specialist in orthopaedic operations and leads Australia in canine arthroscopy as well as joint replacements for arthritis. Veterinary staff assisted Dr Preston in the two-hour operation to replace a hip on four large cross-breed dogs that have a debilitating joint disease. Dr Margaret Reilly, Director of JCUVet, said the procedure not only provided a safe and timely service for their referral patients, it offered a learning opportunity for staff. We were so pleased to have Dr Preston provide his service to our patients and for our staff to watch his routine and techniques hes a rock star in the veterinary world, she said. Its much easier and safer for the patients to have the operation in their home town instead of putting them on a plane. Postoperatively it will provide a better outcome and its more convenient for our clients. Our post-operative service is an important element as we operate 24-hours daily to provide a great level of care for the dogs. JCUVet is the only veterinary emergency centre and specialist referral hospital north of the Sunshine Coast that functions as an after-hours emergency and critical care service, a specialist referral centre and clinical training facility for final year JCU veterinary students. 22.01.2022 Dr Kevin did a home visit to fit Alfi with his new wheels & a new pain relief patch! Poor Alfi has terminal cancer that has spread to his spine and left him par...alysed but he is otherwise so bright and happy. He won't wear his wheels all the time, but they let him get out in the sunshine and enjoy a bit of a "walk", markedly improving his quality of life in his last few days. Please share and give him a Like to send him your best wishes. #goldcoastvet See more

18.01.2022 Be aware of this common toxin on Mother's Day! Does your special someone have a cat? If so, be very aware when choosing flowers this Mother's Day that they don'...t contain lilies! Every part of the Lilium family plant is extremely toxic to cats. This includes flowers, leaves and even the pollen when licked off their fur during grooming. Lilies cause renal failure and death in cats. If ingestion is suspected they need to be seen by a vet IMMEDIATELY! The safest option is to leave this very beautiful flower for the non-cat owner.

15.01.2022 Recycle your soft plastics! In the medical field it is impossible to not create waste. We are very aware of this, and therefore make every effort to minimise o...ur impact on the environment. Recycling soft plastics is one way that we can make a difference with the waste we create, and we feel pretty good about it. We separate the paper from the soft plastic and recycle both separately so they can be managed appropriately at the recycling plants. Soft plastics are said to be the #1 contamination in the recycling systems because they are not designed to separate the plastics out. Plastics get caught in the system and literally jam it up and need to be cut out. Once we have full garbage bags of only soft plastic we take it to the local supermarket for recycling. All this soft plastic is then turned into park benches, school desks etc. How great is that?! See more

13.01.2022 During the heat we are starting to have already, we thought it would be a good time to share with you some helpful information about Heat Stress. Happy Reading.... MORETON BAY EQUINE VETS Dr. Trent Raeburn BVSc Dr. Lucy Kennedy DVM Dr. Lindsay McNaught BVSc Dr Mary-Kate Burke DVM Phone: 0447 202 600 Email: [email protected] Web: moretonbayequinevets.com.au Post: P.O. Box 1044 Morayfield QLD 4506 HEAT STRESS During our summers in Queensland, we tend to have high temperatures. These not only affect people but also our pets. Signs of heat stress may include the following but not limited to: Excessive sweating or lack of (in horses) Weakness/ collapse Stilted gait Fatigue or restlessness Depression Respiratory distress Increased heart rate Seizures Increased temperatures Heavy panting (in dogs) If you notice these signs please give us a call as soon as possible. Prolonging heat stress treatment can cause multi-organ failure with permanent damage. Avoid exercising horses during the hottest part of the day to reduce the risk of heat stress. Walkways/ footpaths and the asphalt on our roads can reach high temperatures, so avoid these when out walking your dogs. The pads underneath their feet are soft and can burn and blister. We also urge people to not leave their dogs in cars unattended. On a 29 degree day, within 10 minutes it can get up to 40 degrees inside the car. It would be recommended to take you dog home before going in to the supermarket.
