07.01.2022 With the rising waters and escaping pests, we are seeing some incredible photos and videos. Here are some simple tips to help pest proof your house in a flood. Blocking gaps under and around doors. For cockroaches and spiders, this can be as simple as taping with masking or duct tape, but rodents will required something a bit more heavy duty like steel wool. Once the flooding is over, bristle strips, pest blockers or weather strips will provide a more long term solution. Kee...p your outdoor lights off and window coverings closed. A lot of insects have a natural attraction to light sources, and predatory spiders will come looking for a feed. Keeping light to a minimum will help reduce pest populations. More long term, sensor lights, timed lights or changing to a yellow coloured outdoor light will help. Rodent populations were exploding in grassed areas before the water came and now need somewhere safe and dry to live. Your house looks pretty good for this. Mice will enter a hole as small as your pinky, so total proofing is often no possible, but any reduction in entry points is helpful. Using steel wool, or sheet metal will ensure rodents can't chew through. Cut back over hanging trees. These provide an easy bridge for rodents to get on your roof and we have a saying, once they are on your roof, they are in your roof. Roof rats are known to jump up to 1.6 meters so a 2 meter gaps is recommended. Remember these populations are always larger than they appear. Early stages of trapping and baiting will help prevent large population build up in your house. But... a little tolerance is required. Don't forget, a lot of these 'pests' are important for biodiversity in our environment and help more than they hurt. As a reminder, we are closed today and will monitor operations going forward. If you have any questions in the mean time, please don't hesitate to contact us through PM. We can't wait to get back an help our communities rebuild. Stay safe everyone. See more
