14.01.2022 WATER PROFITS TO FLOW BACK TO PEOPLE I'm calling for the Mount Isa Water Board to be reverted to local ownership to redirect high profits back to the people... who have suffered years of astronomical bills and away from the State Government’s grubby hands. It comes after the Board reported an after-tax profit of $5.15 million for 2019-2020 as local residents and businesses struggled to keep on top of exorbitant water costs. It’s appalling that the Board, which is owned by the Queensland Government, is boasting such a big profit when its customers can barely manage to keep their lawns green and have been repeatedly slapped with crippling bills, some reaching five figures. The reality is, at the moment, $3-5 million in profits goes back to the Government from selling water to Mount Isa residents and businesses from an asset (Lakes Moondarra and Julius) they didn’t even build. Gaining the support of Mount Isa Mines, which built key water source Lake Moondarra and paid for a portion of Lake Julius, is key to facilitating the authority. 13.01.2022 Not only is today International Nurses Day, but it also celebrates the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. A special thank you to all Nurses ...today. As with Nurses today, the ‘Lady of the Lamp’ was committed to her patients. While she nursed during a period which may seem uncaring or even barbaric today, she strove to make changes to how patients were cared for in hospitals, and even influenced future hospital design, proposing more sanitary conditions for patients to reduce complications and improve mortality. Her work during the Crimean War in the 19th Century, where the death rates from illnesses such as typhus, typhoid, cholera and dysentery were far higher amongst wounded soldiers than deaths caused by battle, was where she became notorious as the lady of the lamp. We salute her courage, and her conviction. Her dedication and her innovation lives on today. As Henry Longfellow wrote, in part, in 1857. Lo! in that house of misery A lady with a lamp I see Pass through the glimmering gloom, And flit from room to room. Here’s to Florence, and here’s to Nurses everywhere.

03.01.2022 BIG FINANCIAL BOOST FOR MOUNT ISA WATER BOARD The Mount Isa Water Board has recorded a significant profit in the past financial year, according to its latest... annual report. The Boards operational profit has increased year on year: $7.12m (2019-20) $5.89m (2018-19) $2.14m (2017-18) Chair Steve De Kruijff said the profit is a result of more water being available, after years of drought, an increase in demand for the resource, and other cost saving measures. He said the extra revenue will enable them to continue upgrading infrastructure. How would you like to see the Water Board assets improved? Read the full report: https://bit.ly/3dt0v12
