20.01.2022 This week is Legacy Week it is the annual national appeal to raise awareness and funds for the families of our incapacitated and deceased Veterans. It is held in towns and cities big and small across Australia and supported by young and old. The funds raised from Legacy Week help Legacy continue to assist approximately 60,000 beneficiaries, with 96% of them being elderly widows throughout Australia, with essential services such as, counselling, special housing, medical, advoc...acy and social support. Public support will also help Legacy nurture childrens education, by contributing towards their school fees, books, uniforms, and recreational activities to aid their self development and confidence. There are thousands of Australian Defence Force personnel currently deployed overseas. Legacy stands ready to assist their families should the worst happen. Help these families by becoming a volunteer or donor now. All funds raised will help continue our essential role in the community. Legacy would like to thank our National Partners, members of the ADF, and the many volunteers, schools, services and businesses for their support of our annual Appeal. 16.01.2022 Last Australians KIA in Vietnam On the 21st of September 1971, five soldiers from D Company 4RAR were killed in action during an assault on a heavily defended b...unker system at the Battle of Nui Le. These five soldiers were the last Australians to be killed in action in Vietnam. Today, we pause to remember 5718195 Private Brian Belikan (21) 3799449 Private James Duff (22), 56226 Private Keith Kingston-Powles (24), 3798081 Private Ralph Niblett (22) and 5718122 Private Roderick Sprigg (21). All five men were serving with D Company 4RAR on Operation IVANHOE in the Phuoc Tuy Province at the time of their deaths. On the 21st of September, 11 Platoon was assaulting the enemy bunker when the lead sections were hit by heavy sustained automatic fire from several mutually supporting bunkers. Privates Beilken and Sprigg were killed instantly during the opening engagement by heavy machinegun fire, whilst Private Niblett was struck in the chest. Despite medical attention by the Section medic, he died shortly after. Private Kingston-Powles bravely attempted to returned fire with his machinegun before being killed a few moments later. Private Duff’s section was withdrawing to form a defensive position with the remainder of the platoon when he was struck by an enemy RPG, killing him instantly, and wounding several others. These five brave men were the last Australians to be killed in action in Vietnam. Lest we forget.

15.01.2022 On this day in 2008, the Battle of Khaz Oruzgan took place. A combined Australian, American, and Afghan patrol was ambushed by Taliban fighters near the villag...e of Ana Kalay, Khaz Oruzgan, Afghanistan. The battle was one of the most intense for Australian forces since the Vietnam war at the time. Outnumbered and surrounded the battle would last over nine hours before the patrol managed to break out from the ambush and return to FOB Anaconda, having expended nearly all ammunition. During this contact, Corporal Mark Donaldson would perform acts of exceptional gallantry in the face of accurate and sustained enemy fire that ultimately saved the life of a coalition force interpreter and ensured the safety of the other members of the combined Afghan, US and Australian force and for this he would later be awarded the Victoria Cross. Australian Explosives Detection Dog (EDD) Sarbi would spend almost 14 months missing in action (MIA) in Afghanistan after disappearing during the Battle of Khaz Oruzgan. She was rediscovered alive in late 2009 by US forces and returned to Australia. From the 37 man patrol there was 1 KIA (US), 11 WIA (9 Aus) & 1 MIA (EDD Sarbi). : Australian War Memorial

11.01.2022 Almost 1 million Australians served their country during the Second World War and around 12,000 of these remarkable men and women are still alive. While as a na...tion we can never repay the debt we owe those Australians who served, we can still say thank you in a meaningful way to those that are still with us today. Today I announced that in the lead up to the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on 15 August, every living Second World War veteran can receive this specially produced commemorative medallion and certificate. It was an honour to present the very first to veteran and Sale local, 98 year old Rose Jackson who served in the Australian Womens Army Service during the Second World War. Rose was a private and was posted to Bandiana, Victoria after undertaking training and worked in a clerical role. Thank you for your service, Rose. If you are a Second World War veteran, or know someone who is, I encourage you to apply or help them with their application. 09.01.2022 #OTD The Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels On the 14th of October at 4am, Sapper Bert Beros wrote a poem paying tribute to the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels whilst serving on the Kokod...a Track. The poem, below, commemorates the native Papuans who served as porters and stretcher bearers during the fighting along the Kokoda Track in WWII. As a result of this poem, and a photo taken by war photographer George Silk of blinded Australian Private George Whittington being led to a field hospital near Buna by carrier Raphael Oimbari (below), the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels would be immortalised in Australian Military History as symbols of compassion and cheerfulness in the face of adversity. Beros’ poem is enclosed in full below: Many a mother in Australia, When the busy day is done, Sends a prayer to the Almighty For the keeping of her son, Asking that an Angel guide him And bring him safely back Now we see those prayers are answered On the Owen Stanley track, For they haven’t any halos, Only holes slashed in the ears, And with faces worked by tattoos, With scratch pins in their hair, Bringing back the wounded, Just as steady as a hearse, Using leaves to keep the rain off And as gentle as a nurse. Slow and careful in bad places, On the awful mountain track, And the look upon their faces, Makes us think that Christ was black. Not a move to hurt the carried, As they treat him like a Saint, It’s a picture worth recording, That an Artist’s yet to paint. Many a lad will see his Mother, And the Husbands, Weans and Wives, Just because the Fuzzy Wuzzy Carried them to save their lives. From mortar or machine gun fire, Or a chance surprise attack, To safety and the care of Doctors, At the bottom of the track. May the Mothers in Australia, When they offer up a prayer, Mention those impromptu Angels, With the Fuzzy Wuzzy hair. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 08.01.2022 Stage 3 lockdown has given the committee and local trades the time to mend, clean and paint the club. Whilst cleaning we discovered on our memorabilia shelf a medal with no plaque or information to whom it belonged to or how it became a part of the club. On the Medal is a name and a service number; Service Number 979 Pte J C Traynor 3 /BN A.I.F.... Kenny has done some research and found the story of James Charles Traynor WW1 who owns the medal. He was born in Melbourne 1880. James had no listed or known family other than an Aunt Josephine Livingston of 55 Richardson Road Albert Park Melbourne Victoria. James was a boundary rider at Narromine NSW before he enlisted in Kensington NSW on the 28th August 1914. At the time of his enlistment he was engaged to Edith Clarke of Woomera Cross Street, Double Bay, NSW although Edith is not listed as his Next of Kin on his service records. After being sent to the front-line Dardanelles Campaign (Gallipoli) he was wounded several times from gunshot wounds and shrapnel but always returning to his unit to fight. After being shipped out to France to continue his service in battle he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. He was promoted in the field to LCpl and then to CPL., and his military docs have him as listed; to be SGT. Honoured Military Medal, Citation reads: - This N.C.O. took up a position on the top of a dug-out from where he commanded the enemy bomb throwers among whom he caused many casualties and greatly assisted in warding off their attacks. Although exposed to shrapnel, machine gun and sniping fire he remained at his post till no longer required there. Source: Commonwealth Gazette No. 62Medals: In a battle in Pozieres, France on 24th July 1916 James was killed in action along with many of his unit. He is buried with his mates at the battle site 3 Miles NE Albert France and has no known grave. His unit has a cross with those that died in this battle. James is listed at The Australian War Memorial, Roll of Honour, Villers-Bretonneux Memorial (Australian National Memorial France). Sadly, all James medals were presented after his death. James and all who serve are true heroes and have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We will remember James with the dignity and respect he deserves at the Loch Sport RSL and proudly display his medal for all to see and honour. We are unsure how his medal came to Loch Sport RSL as all his medals were awarded to his Aunt and he has no other known family according to his records. If there is any relative or friend who can shed some light on how the medal came to the RSL we would love to add this to his medal on display. CPL James Charles Traynor WE WILL REMEMBER YOU. LEST WE FORGET.

06.01.2022 Just over 20 years ago, on September 20, 1999, an Australian led, multinational peacemaking mission known as INTERFET (The International Force East Timor) helpe...d to bring peace and stability to East Timor after years of unrest. In the days leading up to the INTERFET deployment, the Chief of the Defence Force at the time, Admiral Chris Barrie, said INTERFET would be ‘the most significant military undertaking we [Australia] have had since World War Two.’ To help commemorate this significant anniversary, RSL Victoria has published seven stories from servicemen and women, civilians and journalists who were in East Timor during INTERFET. Their stories are ones of service, resilience and hope. We encourage all of our followers to click this link: http://interfet.rslvic.com.au/ and explore our commemorative feature on INTERFET. 01.01.2022 #OTD Battle for Australia Day On the first Wednesday of September every year, we commemorate the Battle for Australia Day. This day marked the first defeat o...f Japanese forces in the Battle of Milne Bay. Today we recognise all those who served on the home front in Australia, and who fought on land, air and sea in battles in the Coral Sea and New Guinea, including Milne Bay and the Kokoda Track, between 1942 and 1945. Mainland Australia came under direct attack from the Japanese four days after the fall of Singapore in February 1942 with the Bombing of Darwin on the 19th of February the first of 60 raids on the city. Throughout the war, Broome, Port Headland, Derby, Katherine and Townsville would also come under attack. In May 1942, Australia was also attacked by sea by three Japanese midget submarines, one of which sunk the HMAS Kuttabul killing 21. Overseas, Australian soldiers would fight in the New Guinea campaign from January 1942 to August 1945 in battles along the Kokoda Track and at Milne Bay, Wau, the Huon Peninsula, Wewak and Bougainville. More than 600 Australians were killed and over 1,000 wounded during this campaign. Australia was defended by more than half a million full time Navy, Army and Air Force personnel and the womens services during this time. Civilians also contributed, working in jobs geared towards the war effort and living with wartime controls including rationing and restrictions on movement. Today, we pause to remember those who served, and those who were killed or taken prisoner in Australia and in New Guinea in the desperate fight for Australias survival during the second world war. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message.
