25.01.2022 Ever wondered how fast a grass fire can move? With the @Bureau of Meteorology predicting a warm and wet spring there is likely to be good grass and crop growth across NSW. With this growth will come the increased risk of grass fires. Maintain your property, be prepared and have a plan.

24.01.2022 1st October is the official start of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for 2020 and the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is urging Lower Hunter residents to prepare for the fire season now.... NSW RFS Superintendent Martin Siemsen is urging residents to complete a Bush Fire Survival Plan and ensure all members of the household know what to do on days of increased fire danger and if their home is threatened by fire. Residents should prepare their property by removing flammable materials from their yards, clearing gutters of leaves, checking hoses and, where appropriate, conducting hazard reduction activities. While it is important to continue hazard reduction we have all seen the devastation that bush fires can bring to a community, so I strongly urge people to exercise caution when carrying out these activities, Superintendent Siemsen said. Residents can ask their local Fire Control Centre for assistance in carrying out safe hazard reductions and for advice about whether they need a Bush Fire Hazard Reduction Certificate. With summer conditions becoming more conducive to the spread of fire, people need to be extremely careful when using fire. Never leave a fire unattended and if a fire does escape, it is essential to call Triple Zero (000) immediately so that emergency services can respond accordingly and minimise the damage. During the Bush Fire Danger Period any person wishing to light a fire will require a permit in the following local government areas: Port Stephens Maitland Dungog Cessnock . www.rfs.nsw.gov.au .

24.01.2022 This year, we are once again one of the best equipped states when it comes to firefighting aircraft. These planes are currently on standby at Richmond RAAF base ready to respond to any significant fires that break out throughout this summer

21.01.2022 You may have heard the NSW RFS telling everyone to have a Bush Fire Survival Plan, but do you really know what it means? Well, a Bush Fire Survival Plan is just that; it’s a plan to help you, your family, and property to survive a bush fire. There’s a lot of things to consider and a lot of decisions to make, so to help you make your plan the NSW RFS have broken it down into easy steps to help you decide what you’ll do when a bush fire threatens you. Maybe you are thinking t...hat you will just plan as you go and ‘follow the advice’. During a bush fire there is a lot going on and a lot of information to process. The precious time spent trying to make decisions on what to take and where to go, can have devastating consequences. A Bush Fire Survival Plan doesn’t take much time to complete, but will save precious time should you ever need to use it. Get started with your plan, or check up on your current plan now at: www.myfireplan.com.au #nswrfs #getreadyweekend

14.01.2022 A year ago today, our hearts were broken with the loss of two of our volunteers - Deputy Captain Geoffrey Keaton and firefighter Andrew O’Dwyer. The two young d...ads from the Horsley Park Rural Fire Brigade were tragically killed when a tree hit the fire truck they were in at Buxton, south-west of Sydney. Today, many of our members will take a moment for quiet reflection, to give thanks and remember. Sadly, Geoff and Andrew were two of four NSW RFS members who lost their lives last season and we will mark the anniversary of the loss of Sam McPaul and Colin Burns in the days ahead. And we will also remember the lives of the three American aircrew who died when a Large Air Tanker crashed in January. While we reflect on the terrible loss, including for members of the community, we are also grateful for the support, friendship and camaraderie shown over the last year, in such a difficult time for so many people. Days like this are tough and support is available. Lifeline 13 11 14 Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 For NSW RFS members, you can contact the Critical Incident Support Services Team or the Member Assistance Program for free support.
