24.01.2022 Kylie & Tim The couple run a graphic design business in Yarraville, which has luckily not been majorly impacted due to the lockdowns in Melbourne. Reflecting on the second lockdown, they believe it feels worse this time. During the first lockdown, everyone in the world was shut in. This time, it’s just us. They have noticed more judgement this time around, more blame, and more anger. To get through, the family has built in routines and regular catch-up time with friends and f...amily. This includes having a fire Friday nights, over the fence drinks with neighbours, and dinner together every evening. Nothing special, just routines. [It’s] more palatable being locked up when it’s cold outside. That’s helped. For the business, the government assistance has also been helpful and they are appreciative of the support. It has reduced the stress about having enough work to keep all of their employees going. 17.01.2022 John, Michele, Levi (10), Ayla (7), Jona (18 months) - Follow up #2 One day, Michele and the kids decided to do more baking as a family activity to get through isolation. They all loved having a treat during the day and something fun to do together. The idea quickly grew, and the family decided to start making cakes for others in the neighbourhood who needed a lift to get through the week. Michele wanted to use her love of baking to spread some love around. Each week, Michele... and the kids decide what to make. They then give the baked goodies away to 5 families who need some cake love that week. The kids custom decorate the boxes with drawings and messages. It has been both a coping mechanism and a way for Michele to teach her kids to give back to the community. 12.01.2022 Jodie, Bruce, Georgie (18), Hamish (18) Georgie and Hamish are celebrating their 18th birthdays during the second lockdown in Melbourne. Since it is difficult to capture and share special moments right now, the family is honouring the twins with a Lockdown Portrait. While we are all facing physical isolation because of COVID-19, the family has been facing a different type of isolation for quite awhile. Hamish has been struggling with mental illness. This alone is challenging..., but has also felt isolating for the entire family. Many friends and family will check-in to see how things are going, but most don’t really understand what it means for the family's day-to-day life. People have certain perceptions of how they behave when they have mental illness...I think people don’t feel comfortable knowing what that mental illness might mean for him or the family. If it was a physical illness, they’d be happier to talk about. These challenges haven’t stopped them from living as a family. They still have an evening meal together every day, often along with a healthy and opinionated ‘affairs of the world’ debate. Elle says that 90% of her customers now are local and repeat customers. This has allowed her and her staff to learn nearly every person’s name and coffee order. The lockdowns have been great to be able to get to know people on a much deeper level, even if the day-to-day is less exciting because of... the limited products they are able to offer.
