12.01.2022 6 Steps For Caring For Your External Hard Drive With external hard drives providing an extremely economical way to store your extra data, many homes and businesses these days find themselves with more than one. Here are a few tips on how to best use and handle your external drives. Dont Knock The Drive... Depending on the type of drive you have, impact could damage it. The hard drives mechanical drives work a little like a record player. Envision a spinning platter and a needle reading it. Note, you dont have to worry about this with a Solid State Drive (SSD) as there are no moving parts. Be Careful When You Pull It Out You can damage the drive port with a hard or sideways yank on its USB plug. Remove the device cable with a gentle pull. Its best to unplug the drive cable when its not in use. Then, when you are reconnecting the external drive, inspect the connector before plugging the cable back in. Look for any damage, debris, or corrosion to help maximize the devices lifespan. Dont Skip The Removal Steps You may be in a hurry, but always take the time to remove the hard drive from your desktop before physically unplugging it. On Windows, youll usually right click on the drive and press Eject. For Macs, you can drag the drive icon to the recycle bin (which changes to an eject button). Never unplug the drive while moving data to or from the hard drive unless you want to risk data corruption. Dont Suffocate The Drive Have your ever put your hand on the hard drive after prolonged use? Its hot. Dont immediately store it away in a bag or tight space. Give it some time to cool off first. When its out, and in use, keep the drives vents clear of other objects so that it has some airflow. Set it on a flat, level surface. Avoid placing it on paper, towels, or other cloth items that could add to its heat levels. Keep It Away From Potential Hazards Liquid or a build up on condensation in the area can cause irreparable damage to a hard drive, Make sure you have plenty of air flow in the place where you operate the drive, and keep it away from air conditions and places where there may be accidental spills. Hard drive failures can be caused by environmental factors such as temperature and air quality too. Dont Expect It To Be Immortal A hard drive isnt going to last forever. They arent built for that. They can also get lost or stolen. Dont let one external hard drive be the only place you are backing up your data. Have a backup on your computer, on the drive, and a copy in the cloud. Then, youll always be ready to move on to a new drive that you will love with the same care and consideration outlined above.

08.01.2022 A holiday or business trip can be stressful at the best of times. Whether youre off for an overnight stay, or taking a longer getaway (if you are were jealous!) there are certain things you need to keep in mind: Have Plans For Being Offline Sometimes you simply cant get online, which will do you no good when youre checking into your hotel and all your booking details are tucked safely away in your email account. You can print out essential travel and business details on p...aper, but if you have a lot or dont want to carry them, you can also save them to a document on your phone or computer. Emails can be copied and pasted into a MS Word document, or you can print them to PDF by pressing Print > Save to PDF (or similar). Many apps also have an offline mode that allows you to store the information on your computer (including Netflix which can definitely help make those unexpected airport delays more bearable!). Dont Forget Your Power Cables & Adapters Youve seen it beforepeople asking to borrow your charger and huddling around in groups until their device has enough juice to get them through a few more hours. Remember it is only funny when it happens to other people so make sure that it doesnt happen to you. Be sure to pack your correct power adapters and cables, along with any plug/voltage converters required to match where you are going. It is also worth carrying your USB charging cables on your person or carry-on luggage, as many planes and airport shops now offer a place for you to plug in for a quick boost. Consider Using Your Mobile Phone For Internet Access The wireless networks in hotels are notorious for being slow or insanely expensive. You may find that its quicker and cheaper to use your mobile phone as a wireless Internet connection (especially when traveling within Australia). This means that you connect your laptop to your phone via WiFi or cable and piggyback on its mobile internet connection. Most carriers and phones allow this but not all. Importantly, if you are in another country, be sure to find out in advance about data costs and consider opting for a local pre-paid sim card which may be cheaper. Think Before Using Free WiFi Many cafes have free WiFi these days along with libraries, shopping centres, bookstores and other public areas. Unfortunately, that convenience can come at a huge cost. The wireless network you use to check your email while relaxing with a latte could be operated by someone up to no good and these are largely unregulated. Perhaps stick to using it for finding out the latest sports scores and not using it for Internet banking and other sensitive tasks.
