25.01.2022 Great front page news this week.. MC Observer

25.01.2022 Another insidious threat to our local area..

25.01.2022 This 2011 article still is highly relevant for the nambucca Valley and worth revisiting

22.01.2022 Our rural communities need your help to protect Australias precious groundwater. We currently have important national laws to protect this life-giving resource... but next week the Abbott Government will ask our Senate to vote to trash those laws and hand over the reins to the state governments. We cant let this happen. It will become easier for conflicted state governments to push through mining and coal seam gas projects, and instead of federal oversight with impacts on nature, environmental monitoring will be at the whim of the states. Farmers livelihoods in regions like the beautiful Pilliga in New South Wales will be at risk. Rural communities are at risk. Forests, plants and animals reliant on groundwater are at risk. The Outbacks life-giving springs and Great Artesian Basin are at risk. Heres how you can help: http://bit.ly/1BEwm6d

21.01.2022 *RED ALERT - AUSTRALIANS UNDER ATTACK* #LeardBlockade PLEASE READ & SHARE - WHY IS LEARD FOREST SO IMPORTANT? 396 SPECIES IS WHY - PLEASE SHOW UP & BE THEIR V...OICE The largest area of remnant vegetation remaining in the Liverpool Plains NSW, the Leard State Forest is 3, 421ha of the nationally-listed and critically endangered Box-Gum Woodland. This makes it the most extensive and intact area remaining in Australia. Home to 396 plants and animal species, critical habitat for 34 threatened species and several endangered ecological communities. This area of White Box-Gum Woodland is particularly significant, with an average of 100 hollows per hectare. These hollows take over 100 years to form and are imperative for many species such as Corbens long-eared bat, Nyctophilus corbeni and the Yellow- bellied Sheath tailed bat, Saccolaimus flaviventris. Together Boggabri Coal, Maules creek Project and Tarrawonga will destroy more than 5000ha of Leard State Forest, including 1,082ha of the Box- gum Woodland. At this time of year, most who reside in Leard Forest are in hibernation. Mine opponents say the NSW Department of Planning and Environment changed the management plan two weeks ago, allowing Whitehaven to now continue clearing forest into winter, the protectors say that animals would be more vulnerable. Over 150 people have been arrested trying to stop this mine in the last four months The rules have been bent to breaking point for Whitehaven Coal. Whitehaven say they have had permission to clear during winter prior to this month. This region is also rich in cultural significance for the Gomeroi people. There is already evidence of ancient scar trees and burial sites being destroyed. In mid-November, Gomeroi Elders wrote to Environment Minister Greg Hunt, urging him to place an emergency stop-work order, on land being cleared at Whitehaven Coals Maules Creek project, in the Leard Forest near Boggabri, Northern New South Wales. It was requested that he protect the site under the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Heritage Protection Act. There has been no response. The Liverpool Plains is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the country. In fact, this is a world class food bowl. The Great Artesian Basin, Australias largest and most important underground water storage reserve is also located directly below. This region is additionally under siege from Liquid Natural Gas / Coal Seam Gas mining. Once destroyed, there is no sure way to rehabilitate or detoxify this vital region, the soil or aquifers. There are already recorded incidents of contamination, legally accounted for. For the reasons listed above and more, people are wanting the NSW government to intervene. In the meantime they are determined and committed to resisting this development. When the call goes out to protect a region, and enough caring Australians all show up in the one place, we know from Bentley the government will listen. Please help. WE ARE THE ONLY RESCUE TEAM.. 18.01.2022 Heres the latest from the Maules Creek Coal Blockade >> http://bit.ly/Obm49K Our climbers are now 52 hours into the blockade to stop the bulldozers razing this... forest for a coal mine. Two activists have been arrested, but there are still three more up there holding their ground. Theyre in good spirits, and really appreciate all the messages of support youve all been sending on Facebook and Twitter! LIKE & SHARE to show your support, and add your name to this emergency petition to stop mining giant Whitehaven Coal flattening the forest for a big, dirty coal mine: https://www.greenpeace.org.au/action/?cid=72&src=FB1 #LeardBlockade

18.01.2022 Hey Nambucca folk and beyond - this insanity is proposed to be trialled in the headwaters of the Nambucca catchment! Nambucca Valley Conservation Association and local NEFA folk are cranking up a campaign to opposes. another threat to our local forests and water - just in the wake of Lock the Nambucca Valley succeeding to head of a major antimony exploration project in the same areas...Get in touch to get involved [email protected]

16.01.2022 ALL WELCOME to join us for our regular meeting this Saturday 10th May 10am and our AGM on Sat 24th May. Both meetings at the Tewinga Community Centre (2NVR) Rodeo Drive. Be informed, be prepared!

14.01.2022 Celebrating the life of Phillip Hughes today in Macksville. Heartfelt sympathies to Greg, Virginia, Jason, Megan, family, friends and our community. This amazing young man has touched the world with his life..RIP Phillip Hughes <3

12.01.2022 LNV welcomes the assurance from Min. Speakman, following intense community lobbying that the proposed steep land cable logging trial is not anticipated to be included in the new logging rules. It rules out this damaging practice in the short term and is a victory for commonsense.

12.01.2022 As of March an estimated 18.6 million hectares of national parks and forests burned and 80 percent of koala habitat was destroyed in the bushfires. Disgusting behaviour from the short sighted, greedy, forest destroying corporate arm of the NSW Govt. Logging in remnants of unburnt forest while threatened species like koalas and yellow bellied gliders are struggling to survive. SHAME ON THEM! Let your MP Melinda Pavey know what you think about this disgrace!

11.01.2022 GREAT NEWS! Precious Metals Resources has relinquished its licence (EL8016) to explore for antimony and gold in the Nambucca Valley! The licence has now been cancelled. PMR claimed that exploration was not justified. Lock the Nambucca Valley is confident that our strong opposition to commencement of antimony mining activities in the Nambucca had a role to play in PMRs decision to pull out. They were well aware of our existence and the enormous community support for our campaign to prevent them starting. We have won. But before we get too excited we must remember that another company could apply for a similar exploration to plunder and pollute.... and if they do WE WILL BE READY! www.lockthenambuccavalley.com.au

11.01.2022 LNVs next general meeting will be held Sat 17 Oct starting 10am in Bowraville. Focus will be on event stall planning. Contact [email protected] for venue details. All welcome

09.01.2022 Tim Buckley, Director of Energy Finance Studies, Australasia, for the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), said he was not surprised b...y the approval. I never expected Hunt to go against Premier Newman nor PM Abbotts desire to promote foreign firms trying to sustain Australias coal industry. Ironically, should the Galilee proceed, it will actually accelerate the longer term destruction of our coal export industry by dramatically further expanding the capital invested whilst at the same time taking coal prices globally down another 10-20% hence further squeezing sector profit margins that are already down to zero, as Peabody reported last week. These are stranded assets in the making. The Australian Conservation Foundation said the approval is bad news for water resources, wildlife and the global effort to tackle climate change. The foundation said the mine will take 297 billion litres from underground aquifers, destroy a significant proportion of the remaining habitat of the endangered black-throated finch and the coal will be shipped through the Great Barrier Reef, where dredging (said to be three million cubic meters) for a new coal export terminal will damage coral and harm marine life. Australian Greens environment spokesperson, Senator Larissa Waters, history will look back on the Abbott Governments decision today as an act of climate criminality. Off the back of repealing effective action on climate change, the Abbott Government has ticked off on a proposal for Australias biggest coal mine to cook the planet and turn our Reef into a super highway for coal ships. Adani is currently facing multi-million dollar fines in India for violating environmental clearances and bypassing approval procedures such as dumping and destroying conservation zones and Senator Waters asks, Why take the risk with our climate and Great Barrier Reef? Australia should be leading the way on renewable energy rather than condemning India to worse air quality and subjecting the world to more extreme weather disasters, Senator Waters said. 05.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS Update: Protesters at the Maules Creek coal mine construction site have maintained their blockade overnight, and the site remains in lock-down as ...protest action escalates over clearing in Leard State Forest during wildlife hibernation. This morning, a protester dressed as a koala has attached himself to a truck on the main access road to the forest, blocking the road. Other activists remain in place in the forest, determined to prevent any further clearing after the body of a dead bat was yesterday discovered by one of the protesters. Leard Forest Alliance spokesperson, Helen War, said, "Winter begins tomorrow, but we have already found evidence that Whitehavens clearing in this forest at this time is killing wildlife. This should be all the evidence that the NSW Environment Minister needs to take action to stop this cruel and unnecessary bulldozing in Leard State Forest. "We will not give up." Yesterday afternoon, Greenpeace Australia Pacific joined the blockade with an elaborate tree-top protest in the area threatened with clearing, which has remained in place overnight. Two protesters were arrested yesterday evening." LIKE and SHARE to spread this ongoing news! 04.01.2022 Looks like mining interests have their eyes on our beautiful Nambucca Valley again. Newly created company New England Silver Pty Ltd, ACN 643579337, ABN 2147483647, was established on 18/8/2020. Registered office NARELLAN NSW 2567. Its application (ELO6079) to explore a 72 square km area west of Nambucca Heads, north of Macksville and east of Bowraville can be viewed here https://commonground.nsw.gov.au/ We will post more info as it comes to hand. 03.01.2022 Dundurrabin today ... We celebrated Blicks River Guardians 1st birthday ... Shared a beautiful homemade lunch ... Gathered in the sunshine to send a message to... world leaders. We want climate action! Great turn out on the Blicks River, Dorrigo Plateau, NSW. #PeoplesClimate

03.01.2022 Cable logging is a huge threat to our river system and water quality. Downstream water users and farmers stand to be most effected by the inevitable sedimentation movement which will be caused by this industrial scale logging on our steepest upper catchments slopes over 30 degrees. These slopes have been protected from logging for over 20 years due to their highly erodible nature. They are refuges for endangered species like the koala and the big old trees which hold the hillsides together and filter rain runoff. Now Forest corp want to cable log them because they have run out of timber supply due to overlogging! Its a no brainer!

03.01.2022 Congratulations!

02.01.2022 its getting nasty
