19.01.2022 Happy easter :)

19.01.2022 Cowal Highland Gathering 2020 cancelled The Board of Cowal Highland Gathering (CHG) has taken the difficult decision to cancel this years event, as a result of... the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. While this decision is bound to be met with disappointment, CHG chair Ronnie Cairns stressed it was the right one to protect the safety of the competitors and visitors who come from across the globe to be part of the 126-year-old event, as well as protecting the integrity of the world-famous highland gathering. Cowal Highland Gathering is home to the World Highland Dancing Championships, Cowal Pipe Band Championship and Cowal International Heavy Athletics Championship, attracting in excess of 1,000 competitors each year. This is the announcement we desperately hoped we wouldnt have to make, Ronnie said. Up until the last moment we have been working hard to put together a Gathering which delivers the spectacle we are famous for, while also supporting local businesses which benefit from the number of people the event brings to the area. However, it has become clear that substantial travel restrictions will remain in place for some considerable time. This would have a devastating effect on our international Highland Dancing competitors in particular and would damage the integrity of the World Highland Dancing Championships. At the start of this pandemic we were hopeful we would be able to host this years event. As time went on we looked at ways of staging the Gathering in a different format for 2020 but there are just too many uncertainties, together with the potential impact staging the event could have on the emergency services and other key partners, and the time is now right to cancel this years event. We are extremely sorry to disappoint all the thousands of people who compete in, visit as spectators or volunteer at the Gathering - as well as the wider Cowal population who so look forward to the event every year. We share their sadness, but will look forward to welcoming everyone back here in August next year. The decision to cancel this years Gathering has been made in discussion with key stakeholders and organisations. Chairman of the Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (RSOBHD) Christine Lacey MBE said: This has been a heart-breaking decision. There are Highland Dancers across the world who have been practicing all year to have the opportunity to dance on Cowals famous dancing boards. However, as much as we all love the World Highland Dancing Championships, the health, the safety and the well being of all dancers, teachers, adjudicators, pipers, event supporting colleagues and the general public must absolutely be our paramount concern. We also have to be mindful of the economic situation going forward from this pandemic both from the financial aspect from everyones perspective and from the ability for anyone to travel safely both domestically and internationally. We hope this cancellation will mean that we can all meet up again in 2021 where we can embrace the love and respect we all have within our Highland Dancing global community and all be able to compete safely against the best in the world. Tickets already purchased for this years event will be valid for 2021, but if anyone has any questions please contact the CHG office at [email protected] People have been gathering in Dunoon on the last weekend of August since 1894, and this is the only time the event has been cancelled apart from the War years. The 2021 Cowal Highland Gathering will return to Dunoon Stadium from Thursday 26 - Saturday 28 August.

18.01.2022 It is with sincere regret that we advise that the 2020 Champion of Champions Championships and supporting events has been cancelled. Due to the Government direc...tive in relation to COVID-19 on mass gatherings of more than 500 people, and the statement released by the RSOBHD today, the ABHDI have made the decision that the event is to be cancelled. We apologise for the delay in conveying this decision, however the SQRCHDI Executive felt they needed to take time to consider all options, in order to try to minimise the impact this would have on airfare and accommodation arrangements. We appreciate that the cancellation this close to the event is unprecedented in the history of highland dancing in Australia and indeed the world, and will be extremely disappointing to all, however the health and safety of our dancers, members and our community must be of paramount importance. Thank you all for your understanding and messages of support during this time. Please bear with us while we take time to work through the process regarding entry refunds. We will be in touch with further details. Amanda Skidmore President SQRCHDI

16.01.2022 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT re: Thistle City of Brisbane Championships and Competition: The Thistle Highland Dancing Executive has met today on the issue of to can...cel or not to cancel. The decision was made to cancel our 45th Thistle "City of Brisbane Championships and our 47th Thistle Competition. We are very saddened that after 44 years of consecutively running our "City of Brisbane Championships, there will be none run in 2020. Some of you may have been anticipating this notification and some of you may be quite disappointed with our decision. The decision was not easily made however after recommendations from medical professionals, we feel we should have duty of care to all attending our competition and do our part to slow down the spread of COVID-19. We would love to advise that we will simply postpone the event for another date later in the year but as most of you know the Australian Championship Calendar is already full. Therefore we must move on and look forward to 2021. To those that were travelling to South Queensland for the event I am sincerely sorry for any potential financial loss you may incur. Hopefully you will be able to obtain a refund or re book for another event later in the year. Our 2021 competition will be held (upon ABHDI approval) on the 20th March 2021, same format as this year. We hope to see you all then. With regards to entry fee refunds, please do give us some time to sort this out and we will get back to you with details. Thank you to everyone for your continuing support of our annual event and we look forward to running it for you again next year. Kind regards, Jodie Midgley Thistle Secretary

12.01.2022 As you all know the Australian Government has announced they recommend that non-essential mass gatherings of more than 500 people should not go ahead as from Mo...nday 16 March 2020. There is the possibility that more than 500 people will be present at crossover times during our event. We are endeavouring to get answers from our venue and other sources as to what direction we take. We acknowledge you would all like to know where you stand in relation to your flight and accommodation arrangements, but until we have all the facts on what we can do, we cannot give you a definitive answer. We have been informed it will be next week before we receive some of this information. Please be assured that once we know what our position is, we will be advising you accordingly.

10.01.2022 Some fun cardio involving both highland movements and plyometric exercises. I tried to pair each Highland movement with an exercise that complimented it. 1. 8 ...rocks followed by 8 frog jumps complete on each leg x 4 2. 8 open pdb followed by 8 skater jumps, jumping from side to side landing on bent knee X 4 3. 4 hop brush beat beats followed by 4 jumps forward on the same leg, switch leg and 4 jumps backwards. Repeat on opposite leg, complete x 4. Try one section at a time and see how challenging it is for you before you try the next one. Be sure to give yourself a bit of rest in between them if needed

01.01.2022 We have some very exciting news to share with you today. The cancellation of this years event was beyond disappointing, so for the last couple of months weve ...been working hard to put together a celebration of all things Cowal Highland Gathering. Were inviting you to save the dates - 27 - 29 August as we move to a virtual platform, both here on Facebook and also on our YouTube channel, for Cowals Virtual Highland Gathering! Well release more information about what you can expect to see and hear over the next few weeks, but we hope youll join us - and join in - with three days of all your favourite parts of Cowal Highland Gathering. And, while we cant be together in person this year, we can be together in a virtual space Cowal Highland Gathering to host virtual event for 2020 Cowal Highland Gathering is widely reputed to be one of Scotlands best family friendly events, and with this years Gathering cancelled, organisers are getting ready to host a virtual alternative with three days of online entertainment running from 27 29 August 2020. No one could have predicted the events of 2020 with events cancelled as the world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After the cancellation of the Gathering in April the CHG Board met to discuss possible alternative celebrations. The result is a free, three-day online celebration across what would have been the 126th Cowal Highland Gathering from 27 29 August. The event, which will stream on the Gatherings Facebook page and YouTube channel, will include all the elements which make CHG unique, including interviews with past and present competitors and CHG personalities, archive film together with more recent broadcast footage and music from some of the biggest names to step onto the Gig at the Gathering and Ceilidh Tent stages. There will also be opportunities for the online audience to take part including a virtual 5K run allowing anyone, wherever they are in the world, to get involved. CHG Chair Ronnie Cairns is excited about the prospect of moving the historic event onto a virtual stage saying: From the moment we cancelled the Gathering in April we had such an outpouring of sadness from across the world for the loss of this years event that we quickly realised we had to do something for our audience. But we also saw an opportunity to showcase the Gathering, Argyll, and indeed Scotland, to a new, online audience. Over the last few months weve been talking to competitors past and present, musicians and some very familiar faces and trying to work out a programme which will give our online audience their CHG fix. None of this would be possible without the support of EventScotland who have helped us to fund the Virtual Gathering and make it as good as it possibly can be. This years virtual edition of the Gathering is supported by EventScotland, part of VisitScotlands Events Directorate. Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events at VisitScotland, said: The Cowal Highland Gathering is one of Scotlands most prestigious Highland games events and EventScotland is delighted to be funding this virtual edition of the Gathering through our International Funding Programme. Its great to see that audiences from around the world will still be able to enjoy and engage with the Gathering during these unprecedented times, through a diverse online programme of interviews, music performances and archive footage. This is the first time the Gathering will not go ahead since the end of WWII and while the grandstand in Dunoon Stadium remains empty in 2020, the Virtual Gathering is coming to you, wherever you live or however you view it, youll have a front row seat.

01.01.2022 2021 championship steps :)
