25.01.2022 If you want to know more about LOC, and the course I have developed (which is now available), this 30 minute podcast will tell you all. Enjoy! If you are interested in the course, you can sign up here: https://loctherapies.teachable.com/p/ndis-beginners-guide/

25.01.2022 The NDIA is proposing that independent assessors are used to assess functioning and need for funding. These assessments, while free, are only 1 to 4 hours, and the results are NOT available to you. Please help to stop this from happening. Its a clear conflict of interest, and breaches freedom of information laws.

25.01.2022 UPDATES Thought I needed to do an update as things are changing so fast at the clinic. We are almost ONE year old already! We started with just myself, Amy, Lyla and Paula, and are now 10 strong and growing still. I am loving the amazing work the team is doing, and the clients are so wonderful! Every single one comes and works with us so well, and have so much resilience and bravery to face this sometimes difficult society. I have a little secret that I can announce very soon..., but oh boy its exciting! Personally, I have stepped back from client work (the ones the still see me are the ones that have been with me for a long time now), and will concentrate my efforts into more widespread influence. While I love my clients to bits, I feel I can make life better for more of our kind by moving to other things. So, I am writing courses, joining committees, lobbying, training new allied health and managing the clinic. I am now a member of the AAPi NDIS special interest group, and a committee member of the AAPi Neurodiversity special interest group. I welcome any ideas or information that these groups can use to improve and strengthen the NDIS and the ND space. My PM or inbox is always open ([email protected]) We will have presence in other locations soon, details to come. While I love the Caboolture rooms, and will stay there, I want the ehtos of this clinic to be available to more than just Northside Brisbaners. For everyone that has recommended us, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. We run solely on word of mouth now, and I appreciate all the support the community has given us. I am so super excited to see where Left of Centre will be in another years time! See more

21.01.2022 A confronting but honest poem about meltdowns

20.01.2022 So I was updating my lecture to QUT masters of psychology students , and was trying to think of a simple, one sentence description of autism. My head was filled with psych speech, so I asked in various Facebook groups (parent support, adults on the spectrum, therapist groups). This is a selection, and a good representation of the answers. My heart is happy

19.01.2022 Couldn't resist this funny. Even though it hurts my brain to look at that pic! I hope you all survived the first week back at school!

19.01.2022 THIS. I really have no more to say than THIS.

18.01.2022 This is where literal thinking can really help!!!

18.01.2022 This is such a well written description of what happens all too often. I hope teachers read this too.

18.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/privatepracticealliance Next Wed at 1pm I am going LIVE with this amazing woman to talk about the business side of things. Come join us!

17.01.2022 Its stripping people of their dignity when you enforce your preference on others. If you are not sure, ask.

17.01.2022 Had the BEST day on Thursday with the amazing Leah from @leahdesboroughphotographer Staff pics for the website, and a personal branding shoot for me! This is the first of many amazing images she produced. Cant recommend her highly enough

17.01.2022 The speakers in this video are trained in ABA, and now see the harm it does. Left of Centre does NOT, and NEVER will, use ABA practices. We endorse this pledge and add our voices in agreement to it. This is the new, powerful, and, most importantly RESPECTFUL, way to support Neurodivergence.

16.01.2022 This is a great article from a personal perspective about selective mutism. Remember, it's a "can't" not a "won't "

16.01.2022 This poem captures the values and mission of Left of Centre. We do not aim to make people less autistic, or less disabled. Our aim is to give our clients non judgemental support, and tools for their toolbag to navigate an often intolerant society. Autistic is not bad. Disability is only disability because our society blocks them living their true authentic self without barriers.

15.01.2022 Sooooo excited for today!! Full branding photoshoot for our amazing team! Watch this space for behind the scenes shots!

14.01.2022 This is NDIS covered if you are plan or self managed

14.01.2022 At Left of Centre, we are Neurodiverse Affirmative. But, what does that mean? It's a nice buzz word hey? What it means to us is, at the core of it all, is that "You, as a complete person, with skills, flaws, talents and all the other lumpy bits, are ENOUGH." We are all ENOUGH. How does that translate into therapy and support? Now, that is a much tougher question to answer. Here are a few concepts that we embrace, and I teach the provsionals. 1. Respect. We will ALWAYS respect... your point of view and YOUR goals for therapy. We will always respect your narrative, and your lifestory and perspective 2. Unconditional positive regard. Every therapist is taught this, however, often we are also taught "only dogs can do this" I call BS on this. It means that all of our personal judgements, our own beliefs, etc, are left at the door of the clinic. The space is for YOU, not for the clinician 3. Not a disability. We engage in the "social disability model" This model states that ND is not a disability, but can appear so due to an unforgiving, intolerant or unsupportive environment we are forced to live in. Much like neurotypicals would feel like they would have a disability if they were placed in totally autistic validating environment, and they were expected to conform totally to the way WE work. 4. Curiosity. We are deeply curious about all of our clients. Not because was a nosy gossips! but because the more we know about you, the more we can meet you where you are, and then help you in the way you want to be helped. 5. Lived experience. All of our clinicians are either ND themselves, have a family member who is or has extensive experience in the ND space. I am VERY fussy with who I hire, and will prefer not to hire anyone, than to hire the wrong person. There is a lot more to this, and I am currently writing some of the first training in the area, so that more clinicians can skill up in this important, no, VITAL, area of support. Ok, so this got a bit long! And it was all just to introduce this website, which is full of ideas for ND people, BY ND people. Check it out, it's great. https://www.thend.co/home

13.01.2022 https://www.theage.com.au//school-expulsion-rates-plunge-a Expulsion is just not the answer. We need to wrap services around kids that are at risk of disengaging from education, and support them to feel that learning is something that matters.... not blame them for behaviour that is telling us things arent working. We can do better for our kids. We owe is to them to do so.

13.01.2022 A quick, easy and fun idea for fine motor skills. Fine motor development helps with handwriting, eating, dressing and many other needed skills.

13.01.2022 This can be exactly why meltdowns can seem to "come out of the blue". It is usually not about the lost pen, but about the delayed reaction to the traumatic s$%#.

12.01.2022 This is a business oriented facebook live, so if you are interested in the working behind how we make Left of Centre the way it is, come and have a listen! It will be recorded as well for later viewing if you like.

11.01.2022 Pass this on to all your teachers. Scream it from the rooftops. Let your children self regulate.

11.01.2022 Remember a meltdown is a panic attack on steroids. It is NOT a tantrum or a manipulation tactic.

11.01.2022 I am a huge fan of Dan Siegel. Huge fan. I watch this video regularly to remind myself about how meltdowns work biochemically. It is a fantastic explanation as to why talking to your child or telling them to "calm down" at the height of a meltdown is worse than not helpful. Enjoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0T_2NNoC68

10.01.2022 Please email the NDIS to respond the the plan of having clients assessed for functionality by independent assessors. The links are in this newsletter. This proposal is so bad. Conflict of interest, no services to rural areas and no access to reports after the assessment is done. https://mailchi.mp//enewsletter_3_september2020_participan

09.01.2022 The purple side is how we work at Left of Centre. We believe in meeting the client where they are at, and encouraging them to "lean in" to their genuine selves, while building resilience and advocacy skills to manage others who find this difficult to accept

09.01.2022 For the Star Wars fans

09.01.2022 I always love opening new resources! Bear cards are a fav here, and I love the new Mates Traits and Body Signals cards, that can help our clients recognise how they feel by how their body feels and work out how to be a good friend and how to find a good friend.

09.01.2022 I would love to introduce to you our new Clinic Co-ordinator. Gabby has been a Provisional Psychologist at Left of Centre for around 8 months, and has blown me away with her skills and intelligence. Her clients love her, and she has really taken on the role with passion and enthusiasm. Gabby also comes to us with a depth of previous experience, including accounting, HR, and lived experience of parenting ND children. So, how could I not promote her and have her help me make L...eft of Centre even better than it already is? Gabby will be assisting me with supporting the team, getting our group program up and running again, and being much more the face of the business in terms of enquiries that admin cannot answer. She will of course continue seeing clients and has increased her capacity just a little. Please say hi to her if you see her in the clinic! She is now full time, so we will see a lot more of this amazing human See more

08.01.2022 We have a Speech Therapist! Mel is totally amazing, she "gets" her clients! She also is bringing on her beautiful therapy dog, Dobby. Her special interest is feeding therapy, and she is running Lego groups for kids and teens. Her books are filling VERY quickly, so if you want to get into a fabulous ND affirmative Speech Therapist, contact us on either 5348 0979 or [email protected].

08.01.2022 This. This here is why we do what we do. This poor child. How can he feel safe when he is treated like this?

05.01.2022 This made me cry. Cry for all those that are traumatised from mainstream education. But also cry tears of happiness that this narrative is out there and slowly growing.

04.01.2022 Anxiety does not always present typically. This was me as a child, is this you or yours?

03.01.2022 ....And the team grows even more! We are so excited to offer Rob's amazing services at Left of Centre. Kinesiologist Now Available at LOC Caboolture Available Thursdays ... Fees are claimable through NDIS Rob holds a Diploma in Kinesiology, is a second-degree Reiki practitioner and a support worker for people on the NDIS. Rob has been a qualified Reiki practitioner for 6 years, Kinesiologist for three years and a support worker for one year. The majority of his clients in all these disciplines are neurodiverse. Rob works with his clients to find traumas and stressors in the person’s life that are creating distress. Together they find ways to diffuse the situation. These stressors can be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual and the diffusion techniques are tailored to the client and the situation on the day. Ring on (07) 5348 0979 or Speak to our Administration Staff to book. I have known Rob personally for a number of years now, and know he is the perfect fit for Left of Centre. While he operates as a sole trader, not as an employee of LOC, he holds the same values and ethos as we do, and he is a very welcome member of the team. His approachable and friendly nature makes it easy to feel comfortable and respected. I encourage you to book quickly, as he won't have availability for long!

03.01.2022 I was honoured to be interviewed by the amazing Tamara, all the way from Canada! I hope you enjoy my story, this podcast is a little more personal than the Live.

03.01.2022 This is a really good reminder that not all behaviour that is "new" is something that needs fixing. We often call this "situational distress" and know that once the situation changes the distress subsides. For those autistic folks, keeping as much routine as possible as well as accessing sensory or other strategies that can help calm your nervous system is valuable

01.01.2022 Yay! More books for our library. These are all by autistic queer advocate, Yen Purkis. They are an inspiration to the autistic community, and Im so excited to have these books in the clinic. Oh, and they are all autographed by them too!

01.01.2022 I had the honour of being interviewed for a podcast today to talk about Left of Centre and autism and neurodiversity. Im so excited to listen to it when it comes out. Ill post the link when it is released. This is my cat, Misty, sitting on me and forcing me to relax.
