Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds whenever you cough sneeze or blow your nose, prepare food or eat, care for someone sick, touch your face or go to the toilet. Completely dry your hands as well. If you are unable to wash your hands, use alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Remember to cough or sneeze into a tissue and discard the tissue immediately and proceed to wash your hands with soap. If you do not have a tissue available, cough or sneeze into the crease of your elbow. Avoid close contact with others if you are well. Keeping your distance when you are sick is a good defence against viruses. Wear a face mask only if you are unwell or caring for someone unwell there is very little evidence to support the use of face mask in healthy people to prevent transmission of the virus. It is good practice to frequently clean and disinfect the surfaces and objects that people encounter or frequently touch.

The nose is considered the ‘gatekeeper’ to the lungs, so anything that causes inflammation in the nose can cause inflammation in the lungs and vice versa. Having effective treatment for both the nose and lungs, and being well informed and prepared for the start of spring can make dealing with these seasonal conditions a lot more manageable. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs that react to ‘allergens/allergic triggers’ causing a flare up of asthma symptoms including: shortness of breath and coughing, especially at night or in the early morning; chest tightness and wheezing, or coughing after activity. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airways squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow and there is more mucus produced in the airways. These all make it harder to breathe. An asthma attack is a medical emergency, so it’s important to follow a person’s Asthma Action Plan, and if necessary, administer Asthma First Aid and call 000.
